2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Nets

I’m attending the game and I am hoping like heck to see some Linsanity at work so that the Knicks don’t suddenly start stringing a couple of wins together. I don’t want them getting too confident. But you just know that they can’t very well lose to the Nets twice in a week, so this is almost certainly a win. But eh, if they’re going to win a game, at least I’ll be at MSG to watch it. Wins are pretty fun to watch live.

Let’s go? Knicks!

Good news for the tank battalion…. Isaiah Thomas will not be playing for Boston vs Nyets and PHL….

brian…whatever you can do to help – but, try to see if you can keep, randle, ndour and sasha on the bench…only knicks this year with a positive number in the plus/minus column…

I don’t want Rose back. I want a kid that can learn and grow with KP and Wily. I also have had enough of geometry. It’s time to kick PJ to the curb. He’s not helping this team in any way.

But since Rose doesn’t understand the Triangle, that’s what might keep Phil from re-signing him

Also, I like having Reub posting here. We need debate and variety here. And I should point out that many of his posts are not at all inflammatory, for example, when he comments on draft prospects.

Melo has played the entire first quarter against the worst team in the NBA. That’s odd.

this is some fantasy stuff related to the win on tuesday versus the pacers:
“Anthony’s 41 minutes marks his highest workload since Jan. 29’s triple-overtime game against the Hawks, and he hasn’t played less than 35 minutes in a contest since Feb. 1 against the Nets.”

even when we were trying to win – it was always odd having anthony play the whole first quarter…he starts to gas after about 8 consecutive minutes and then starts going hard with his matador defense and shot chucking….

I think Phil is going to continue with some kind of balance between youth and veterans with a huge preference for young players. I can’t see him blowing everything up and thinking 3-4 years down the line when his own contract will be done by then. He’s going to want to make significant progress next year and have a team with a lot of upside for the following year. So if in 2 years the team wins close to 50 games and has several good young players with further upside, he can retire having accomplished his goal of turning the franchise around.

I’m not saying he’s going to be Phil’s top choice, but don’t be shocked if he brings in a player like George Hill to replace Rose. He’s a clear upgrade. He fits the triangle. He won’t be very expensive. He can start while whoever we draft is growing into the job over the next couple of years. He’ll be useful for 3-4 years.

The main thing is to bring in better players on good contracts (preference on young).

Someone needs to tell Breen that the Nets do have a 1st round pick this year. In fact, they have 2!

  9. Brian Cronin Post author

The Nets were riding a lineup with no one who would ever be in another team’s rotation and the Knicks barely built up the lead

I wish we could hear the chatter on the court. Would be great to make prop bets like, “What will be a higher total: Rose’s assists or the number of polysyllabic words he says during the game?”

I’m thrilled that they’re losing, but wow, it’s also really pathetic.

I know losing is good for the tank, but losing to the worst team in the NBA on your home court is fucking embarrassing.

    Ay-yep.

If Baker could shoot he would be a pretty good player. It’s really difficult to judge a player shooting ability when they have less than 150 attempts. I think he deserves a multi-year minimum/slightly above min. deal

  15. yellowboy90

I don’t know why but I think NY has to get rid of O’Quinn this summer. I don’t know why but I have a feeling the little athleticism he has is going to leave and he won’t have the same year next year leaving the knicks unable to get a decent asset back at the deadline.

I wonder if Hornacek’s admission that the playoffs are out of reach has had its effect?

  17. Philmelo

Glorious defeat! Its the type of soul-wrenching loss that makes one proud to believe in the power of tanking.

there was this scene in pulp fiction where uma thurman and john travolta go out to eat at this restaurant called jack rabbit slims – after awhile uma goes to the bathroom to “powder” her nose…when she returns to her booth she immediately notices the food she has ordered is sitting there in front of her…she then comments about how wonderful a situation that is…

left work and the knicks were up by about 6, got home after stopping by lowe’s (right about the time my garage door opener light went on the fritz – my kitchen light went out also…sometines it feels as though god themself is personally fucking with me) and, lo and behold – the new york knicks are down by 8…

almost better than a little snow, a burger and a 5 dollar shake…

    @41

I would so go with Ball based on play alone, but his dad scares the bejesus out of me. That crazy old man will have a field day throwing this franchise under the bus and Dolan will do something very volatile and stupid about it so I’d go with Fultz.

  20. Frank

Guys there is actually a reasonable chance that we lose every game from now until the last game of the season against the sixers. Every game is against a team in the playoffs or fighting for a spot (Bulls and Blazers).

The sixers and magic play each other once, and both teams play the Nets 2x before the end of the season.

It’s really not outrageous to think about the 4th slot.

  21. Brian Cronin Post author

Phoenix is starting to commit to the tank. Bledsoe will rest the rest of the season.

I don’t know how the Pellies haven’t found injuries for AD and Boogie yet. Tanking to get a chance at a top three pick would be huge for them, no? They’re five and a half games out of the 8th seed!!!

Don’t they already have a deal in place for Holliday to be their PG?

  24. Brian Cronin Post author

A top three pick means that they keep their pick. Anything outside the top three goes to Sacramento.

If they did get #3, I imagine they’d take Jackson. But they could also deal it to move further down in the first round and get multiple young players.

The more that I think about it, the crazier it is that they’re not tanking harder.

  25. Accidentank 2017

Dennis Smith Jr or Jayson Tatum will be the 4th pick in this draft and I don’t really want either guy. What the Knicks need is to luck into the 1st pick OR to pick 6th where we can draft Jonathan Isaac. When we trade Melo and get back Rubio and Minny’s 2017 pick (Frank Ntilikina), we will have set ourselves up to win a bunch of games in the Horny Triangle with young two way players led by Kyle O’Quinn and Ricky Rubio. I really don’t trust Phil Jackson to pick Isaac ahead of Smith, Tatum, Fox, and Jackson.

Of course Isaac is having a great game tonight and could continue to have great games to boost his draft stock, so we might need the 4th pick. We just NEED to end up with Isaac and Ntilikina. They’re the two guys in the draft with the highest upside and they’re both plus defenders already. The Melo/Love/Rubio 3 team trade gets us the opportunity for just that.

  26. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

I honestly believe that we’ll take Frank Ntilikina with any pick after the second so all of this tanking joy may be a moot point unless we end up #1 or #2.

  27. ClashFan

Played around with the Tankathon lottery simulator.

Took awhile, but I finally got the Knicks to pop up at #1. Other interesting results in that one: NO gets #2, so Sacto loses that pick, Orlando 3, Boston falls to 4, and the Lakers fall to 5 and lose their pick to Philly!

What a draft that would be!

  28. TheOakmanCometh

Great stuff tonight. I still don’t think we can do better than 6th, but losses like this are key to beating out Sac and NO.

  29. TheOakmanCometh

    @49

Brian, they should be tanking. But they’re desperate to win so they can prove to Boogie, Davis, and Jrue that they should all stay. And Demps and Gentry are both in danger. That’s why I said in a previous thread that this team is ripe for getting ripped off this offseason. Their incentives are all screwed up.

  30. The Honorable Cock Jowles

    You don’t honestly believe anything.

Losing to the Nets again is an amazing accomplishment. Do you think they’re tanking or are they just that terrible?

I think they sadly are that terrible. Which really makes you wonder how this team is going to turn things around any time soon. They have a lot of not very good players on this team. A lot.

  33. thenoblefacehumper

Yeah, we really might have to go full The Process if we actually want fix this mess. If we’re being totally honest, the only player we have legitimately good reason to believe is a long-term piece is…Hernangomez. I love Porzingis, and subjectively I think the tools are all there, but we’re only lying to ourselves if we say he’s a lock to be a productive player for a long time.

Even if he is, two productive players still won’t cut it (not to mention the potential problems they have as a pairing specifically). I mean, New Orleans hasn’t been able to escape purgatory with Anthony freakin’ Davis! This draft sure will be important. Tank on.
