2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks @ Timberwolves

The Knicks travel to Minnesota to take on the Timberwolves in the first game of a home and home with Minnesota. The two games are spread over three games, making the whole thing just really weird. What’s the point? NBA schedules are weird. Like Oklahoma City playing at home, then traveling to New York City for one game before returning right back home. Who schedules like that?

Anyhow, the Timberwolves have an awful record and they are in a major funk, but this is obviously a talented team, especially their big men, Dieng and reigning Rookie of the Year Karl-Anthony Towns, who is awesome and yet has taken a major back seat to Andrew freakin’ Wiggins in the Timberwolves offense for no good reason that I can think of.

Joakim Noah is out tonight, which might actually be a good thing for this team. Kyle O’Quinn will get the start.

Let’s go, Knicks!

  1. The Knicks Should Tank

KP is becoming the focal point of the Knicks offense. This is a great development.

I’m not sure what’s better; KP taking more shots or D Rose taking less shots. And it would definitely suck if D Rose got hit with a turnover on that hustle play.

  2. Ras1980

KP is becoming the focal point of the Knicks offense. This is a great development.

They usually go to him often in the first quarter. The problem is how they stop as the game progresses.

  3. Brian Cronin Post author

Towns is great, but boy, I do not like the rest of this Wolves team. Wiggins drives me nuts.

  4. GoNyGoNyGo

Rose passed twice to KP. O’Quinn throwing caution to the wind on the boards and defense. Good ball movement and unselfish balling.

We’ve seen this before. When do they fall back to bad habits?

I like O’Quinn at the PF. I think he’s better suited there than at center. I wonder if a Noah, Willy, Kuz front line makes sense?

  5. Ras1980

Our bigs already have 3 fouls between them. Methinks either Plumlee or Ndour will end up playing some minutes in this game.

  6. yellowboy90

And y’all wanted to trade my sweet boy Kyle

He’s just creating more value which is helping his makes a trade even more likely. Kyle and a future pick for Noel/WCS is coming

  7. The Knicks Should Tank

And we should only be in the business of trading players for 1st round picks. You never know what they will turn into

  8. Brian Cronin Post author

I legitimately feel worse for KAT than I do for Embiid or The Brow. This kid could be a star for a playoff team and instead he’s playing second fiddle to the 2016 version of Jamal Mashburn.

  9. GoNyGoNyGo

    @16

Did Plumlee dress because we might need him.

I was thinking the same thing. Towns is a monster.

  10. Ras1980

Yes, when can the Knicks steal him?

In 3 seasons. He never wanted to go to Minnesota, He was always about being drafted by us.

  11. Brian Cronin Post author

I still feel the worst for Davis

Okay, fine, fair enough, I probably jumped the gun there a bit. The Brow does have it worse. And they’re probably going to lose Holiday this offseason!

  12. Owen

And the Stackhouse comp on Wiggins is perfect.

I like how Hernangomez led with the knee on that layup attempt…

  13. Brian Cronin Post author

And the Stackhouse comp on Wiggins is perfect.

It is, but I’ve used it so many times for so many current guys I went to Mashburn there instead. :)

But I’m loving my new Isiah Rider comp for these guys like Wiggins who play that ugly mid-90s wannabe Jordan wing style.

  14. Bruno Almeida

I watched Giannis destroy the Cavs yesterday, and now Towns destroying the Knicks… the NBA’s future is going to be something else.

let’s hope he gets tired and the Knicks open up a nice lead!

  15. Ras1980

Isn’t it great that we signed Noah to all that money so he could give us interior defense against elite big men?

  16. Silky Johnson, Phil Jackson Hater of the Year

Karl Towns should really come and ply his trade closer to Piscataway

  17. yellowboy90

They should probably put Melo on Towns in the second half but give him help when he is in the post.

  18. Bruno Almeida

Dunn will be an amazing defender, but he’s so clueless on offense he might be unplayable right now.

also, I’d be happy with a Noah for Cole trade, I miss me some Cole.

  19. Brian Cronin Post author

Man, I hate the Wolves so much. Poor KAT. But yay for the Knicks! Like I said this morning, if ever there was a team to cure the road woes, it would be this sloppy ass Minny team.

  20. Bruno Almeida

I hate when Melo just lets Wiggins score a lazy layup like that, come on, at least put your body on him, force him to adjust.

  21. Ras1980

I hate when Melo just lets Wiggins score a lazy layup like that, come on, at least put your body on him, force him to adjust.

He moved out of the dude’s way. SMH.

  22. Bruno Almeida

it’s kinda funny and sad at the same time that the Wolves went through a billion PGs in like 5 years, and ended up with 2 guys who are carbon copies of each other… decent to good defenders, horrible useless shooters.

  23. yellowboy90

Great job by Jennings of ignoring Rubio and letting him spot up so he can help Melo by taking away Wiggins driving lane.

  24. Ras1980

KP and Towns are bffs. That sounds hopeful.

Towns was a NYK fan growing up from Piscataway, NJ. You put 2 an 2 together.

  25. Clyde's suit

That was a decent half against a team we should beat. We are playing with good energy on both ends and if not for Towns eating us alive on the interior (recurring theme), we could feel pretty good about this half of basketball.

Boy, it used to be the opposing PGs killing us. Now its the front court defense and rebounding looking bad.

Is Melo reading KB? Only one poor shot that half. His defense still sucks but he isn’t forcing anything on the other end…so far.

  26. cgreene

Why doesn’t Hornacek tell KP that every time he jumps for a ball fake that he donates $100 to charity?

  27. Ras1980

Why doesn’t Hornacek tell KP that every time he jumps for a ball fake that he donates $100 to charity?

    LOLz.

  28. The Knicks Should Tank

The Knicks can’t buy a basket but we’re playing the Wolves so we have a shot.

We should really look into what Minnesota wants for LaVine.

  29. The Knicks Should Tank

LaVine gonna be a .600 TS guy and should be the #2 option behind Towns.

Sasha flops are in mid season form.

  30. Ras1980

This kid is a baby and he’s already a beast. When KAT peaks he’s going to be a perennial MVP candidate.

  31. Silky Johnson, Phil Jackson Hater of the Year

Regression to the mean is an ugly, ugly thing when it happens to Melo

  32. The Knicks Should Tank

KAT won’t be a perennial MVP candidate if his teams don’t win. The Wolves need to trade that youth away for some improvements on defense. We should do them a favor and give them Courtney Lee or Joakim Noah for the all-too-fair price of LaVine and a 1st round pick. Then they’ll take off for sure.

  33. The Knicks Should Tank

    My bad, bro.

The Plumlee kid just has no idea of how to use his genetic size and hustle. And then he scores on an And-1

  34. Brian Cronin Post author

Watching the Wolves reminds me of those Tim Duncan Wake Forest teams that sucked despite Duncan being, well, you know. Especially his senior year when he was so by far the best player in the NCAA.

  35. Bruno Almeida

this is Whatever-Plumlee-we-have’s team now, we don’t need Noah anymore!

he’s probably not great at this thing called basketball, but the energy is nice to see!

  36. ClashFan

I like Hornacek leaves young guys in there when playing well. We’ve seen it with Willy and Kuz, and now tonight Plumlee, too.

  37. Bruno Almeida

also, my god, I feel bad for Towns, his team has been specially terrible tonight.

in other news, KP is still awesome and I can’t help but smile when I see him play.

  38. GoNyGoNyGo

Thomas may be riding the pines when he comes back from this injury. Kuzminskis has been very impressive.

  39. Ras1980

I see the future of a KP led team and I like what I see. He just needs to work on coming down strong with that defensive board.

  40. The Knicks Should Tank

I like how Clyde is saying the Wolves crumble in the 4th. Maybe that’s because KAT isn’t playing? Something tells me that’s more about the substitution patterns than it is about the Wolves fortitude.

  41. Brian Cronin Post author

Why are the Knicks waiting until there 7 seconds on the shot clock to get into offense?

Excellent question. Thankfully the rest of the Wolves suck.

  42. Ras1980

Now seems like a good time for melo to make up for being 15 of his last 57

He’s gotta keep taking his shot. At least that’s what he told the media.

  43. cgreene

Melo Melo Melo. That’s for the 3 losses in a row that are directly attributable to his absolutely awfulness.

  44. The Knicks Should Tank

Knicks can’t score. We need Rose over Jennings here; he’ll initiate an offensive possession worth watching.

  45. KJG

Horny brought the dogs back in. And look what’s happened. These guys are crooks…. stealing wins from the fans…

  46. Ras1980

why can’t kp get on the def glass like he does with putbacks…

Because he come crashing in without being moved out of position.

  47. KJG

It’s abundantly clear that the 2ND unit with KP and the other euros run their gameplan flawlessly…and everything else is utter garbage…

    …it’s a personnel issue.

  48. Ras1980

Man, fuck this. Melo plays like shit the entire game and gets the glory of taking the final shot? Fuck that.

  49. Bruno Almeida

my god, what an ugly ending… thankfully the Knicks got the W, that was a very important one.

another bad game for Melo, a quiet game for Rose with the fouls and KP stepped it up massively.

let’s please win easier at home, the Wolves are terrible.

  50. Bruno Almeida

“lololol the last 10 seconds are a giant “FUCK YOU” from Melo to all of us”

how so? if he made one of his terrible shots in the 4th that last shot wouldn’t even be necessary.

I’m happy for the win, still.

  51. GoNyGoNyGo

lololol the last 10 seconds are a giant “FUCK YOU” from Melo to all of us

You guys spend a lot of time posting on the Internet? …That’s what I thought.

  52. Ras1980

    Yeah, he looks devastated.

More proof that he’s not going to stick around that shit franchise. We need to bide our time for when he becomes a FA. He’s a NJ/NY guy and Knicks fan who is besties with KP.

    Twin Towers 3.0 baby!

  53. yellowboy90

You guys act like they were getting somewhere running the BJ and KP pnr for most of the 4th qtr. Those two were going nowhere even though they both carried the team up until that point. KP came up big though when he grabbed a key rebound over Dieng for the put back so that was awesome.

  54. GoNyGoNyGo

    Props to Plumlee and Kuzminskis.

Holiday, Lee, Thomas and Noah are all hurting and KP was seen limping too but seemed to recover.

  55. Ras1980

lololol the last 10 seconds are a giant “FUCK YOU” from Melo to all of us

Actually, the shitty 33 minutes and 50 seconds Melo played preceding those last 10 seconds were the real FU to all of us.

  56. er

Man, fuck this. Melo plays like shit the entire game and gets the glory of taking the final shot? Fuck that.

    Wow

  57. Ras1980

You guys act like they were getting somewhere running the BJ and KP pnr for most of the 4th qtr.

You act like we got somewhere when we didn’t.

  58. yellowboy90

It’s amazing how someone so young knows how to use his elbows to create contact and space. Towns is truly special.

  59. Clyde's suit

Towns and KP as Knicks?! I wish. That would be amazing.

Anyway, watching Jennings run with the Euros was a lot of fun.

  60. Bruno Almeida

one of the only reasons we needed the hero plays in the end was Melo’s play throughout the 4th.

thankfully he hit the shot and came up with the deflection, but to lose a 17 point lead against Minnesota is horrible.

  61. Ras1980

It’s amazing how someone so young knows how to use his elbows to create contact and space. Towns is truly special.

His father, a basketball coach at Piscataway Votech, coached him well. Mr. Towns was a guy who would try out for the Knicks as an UFA.

  62. yellowboy90

You guys act like they were getting somewhere running the BJ and KP pnr for most of the 4th qtr.

You act like we got somewhere when we didn’t.

From which one of my posts did you pick that up from?

I think the whole qtr was terrible offensively after the 7:30 mark in the 4th qtr.

  63. Dough Chew

People are legit pissec about a win. Welp. Now I can no longer b surprised by anything. Goodnight

Don’t you understand? It’s about OBJECTIVE TRUTH and LOGIC over retrograde and barbaric conventional wisdom. Wins and losses are only a small part of the greater struggle that envelops us all.

  64. thenoblefacehumper

Has anyone heard anything about Lee? We proooooobably lose this game without his 8 minutes tonight.

  65. Bruno Almeida

and you guys are trying to regulate how other people feel about a basketball game.

not wrong either, maybe, but amusing.

it’s a win, everybody is happy that it was a win. now people are commentating on what happened during the game and why it was an ugly win, that’s all.

y’all are such soccer moms sometimes, hell.

  66. Dough Chew

With this game being a “good result/bad process” win, I wonder if we’ll hear from our friend Theo tomorrow morning.

  67. Ras1980

Ya’ll miss the point – we won despite the way we played in the final six minutes not because of it. And the scary part was that this was our starting group that squandered the lead.

  68. DRed

Kyle had 8 boards in 17 minutes. Too bad he didn’t have a prayer against KAT. Its absolutely insane that Minny has been letting Wiggins shoot so much. There are very few guys who can guard a big man that coordinated

  69. Geo-n-SoCal

just got home and read through all the posts – ya’ll some funny muthafuckas ;-)

sounded like it was absolutely terror and torture to watch it…

whoever said they finally got a good understanding of what was going on with the knicks without having sound for the game – that shit killed me…

so GoNy…I guess we’re for a soul crushing performance on friday…

  70. Ras1980

From which one of my posts did you pick that up from?

From the insinuation that it wasn’t enough to win the game when that was offensive set which built our lead to double digits before it was squandered when the starters came in. Look at the differentials: Kuz +17, KP +9, Jennings +8.

  71. Dough Chew

y’all are such soccer moms sometimes, hell

    Bruh that’s sexist

Why draw gender and motherhood into this

  72. er

I’m so happy to have KUz. He has the kind of heart and fight we need from the bench and he has a nice skillset

  73. Clyde's suit

Not exactly our starting group at the end…only 2 starters were on the court. 3 starters when we gave up the lead. Lee was having a good game and would have made a difference.

Holiday is a nice player. Rebounds really well for the position. Looking forward to watching him develop.

    Cheezus is nice

  74. ClashFan

I’m so happy to have KUz. He has the kind of heart and fight we need from the bench and he has a nice skillset

Yes! What a solid player, and a nice signing from out of nowhere!

  75. Ras1980

only 2 starters were on the court.

Don’t forget that Rose was actually benched for Jennings with how bad he played during Minnesota’s final run.

  76. Dough Chew

    All joking a salad…

This win raises concerns about this team, but a win is a win. I’m going to breathe a sigh of relief, and worry about basketball tomorrow.

  77. Bruno Almeida

I hope Lee is fine, him losing some time would be bad in what looks like a very winnable next set of games.

  78. GoNyGoNyGo

    @301 –
No Ras, I think we all agree that we won despite playing like crap.

What surprises me is that we’re surprised. This is exactly what the Knicks are right now. To me, it’s a notch down from what I had hoped for but a notch above what I expected. They haven’t really figured out how to play with each other. We’re good at home (7-3) and suck on the road (2-8). We are a .500 team. But that’s OK because in the process of building a winner, this is a phase you have to go through. We were never going to be a 50+ win team this year. Hopefully, if they can keep gaining experience with each other they can avoid some of these awful stretches.

  79. yellowboy90

From the insinuation that it wasn’t enough to win the game when that was offensive set which built our lead to double digits before it was squandered when the starters came in. Look at the differentials: Kuz +17, KP +9, Jennings +8.

That lead was disappearing with Jennings and KP still i the game running the same play over and over and over… It didn’t get better when Rose entered and ran it with KP because unlike Jennings he doesn’t pull the ball out and give it to KP when he is matched against a guard. It didn’t get better when Rose went out and they went back to the KP PnR which lead to two misses. It didn’t get better when they went to the Jennings/Melo PnR. It was ugly all around and the Knicks won. It is what it is.

  80. Ras1980

That lead was disappearing with Jennings and KP still i the game running the same play over and over and over…

You mean before Melo and Rose came in? Because when they were in the game Minnesota immediately crushed us.

  81. GoNyGoNyGo

I have to say that as bad as this stretch of games has been, the Knicks record has been better than I expected. They are 4-2 over the last 6. My forecast was 2-4 (I had them losing to ATL and tonight). This is a game we wouldn’t have won the past few years. But I figured that they would win today, gloat tomorrow and lose Friday. It’s almost a good thing that this game was such a mess. Now they don’t have reason to thump their chests before the Friday rematch.

  82. reub

Plumlee finished a plus 11 and provided lots of energy. He banged bodies, got rebounds and set lots of good picks. The future is bright.

  83. Knew Your Nicks

We still play like shit at times, but at least we know how to finish games and get wins. And the other eastern conf teams are not something special…[except CLE]

  84. jk_in_the_park

@334 — He’s out on the floor already, waiting for his troops …

PS — was listening to the Wolves broadcast for a change, and their announcers kept saying Kuz looked like the kind of guy you’d see at the local health club, but they gave him respect nonetheless …

  85. reub

Tell those announcers that they better stop disrespecting Kuz or there will be more hell to pay on Friday night. And Lavine should expect another Plumlee beating as well if he’s foolish enough to come inside again.

  86. Brian Cronin Post author

I agree that the fact that they backed into this win should make them more on edge for Friday night’s game, and since the only Minnesota player worth a damn already went for 47 and 18 and they still couldn’t get a win, I find it hard to believe that A. he can play any better and therefore B. that the Wolves will play any better. So if the Knicks simply avoid sucking on Friday, they should be in good shape. Man, Minnesota is way shittier than they should be with a guy like KAT in the middle. It really disappoints me. I mean, I’m pumped that the Knicks get to play them while they’re playing like this, but more in a general sense it disappoints me.

  87. Brian Cronin Post author

Wiggins is like Melo, soft on defense

I just dislike him as a player so, so much. It’s less that he’s been a consistently below average player in his career and more that his team and the basketball world, as a whole, treat him like he is a really good player anyways. It’s astonishing.
