Step on the throat early and don’t let up.

Also, Shump has been way off since Texas. I mean, I didn’t expect too many nights of 6/6 from 3, but this is a pretty serious regression.

  2. ephus

I love the Stat/Melo PnR. Twice so far tonight. One turnover, when Stat dropped a pass with a clear path to the goal. One shooting foul for Stat.

  3. Kahnzy

The only one (so far) that can stop STAT now that he’s in game form is STAT himself (turnovers).

  4. Nick C.

Damn what a pass by Melo. Looks off and puts right past a defender’s ear to a running K-Mart. (man do I type slow since then K-Mart dopey tech and little run by Suns)

  5. nicos

Not that Hardaway’s defense was awful on that last play but why on earth would you put him- the worst backcourt defender on the team- on Dragic in the first place? And subbing him in to do so no less?

  6. Kahnzy

why on earth would you put him…on Dragic in the first place?

Ummm…maybe because the East is big? Phoenix is East of somewhere.

  7. er

Anyone remember that series a few years ago when dragic burst on the scene nearly single handedly beating the Spurs. Looks like he plays like that all the time now

  8. d-mar

Dragic is starting to remind me a little of Tony Parker, always moving, crafty, nice pull up J. He may actually be faster than Parker going end to end.

  9. Kahnzy

Is another young PG on their way to a career game against us? I wonder what it’s like to have a good PG…

  10. Kahnzy

You’d think the Knicks would eventually get tired of getting booed off of their own court. They’re on their way to that.

  11. cwolf

Just turned on the game. Tyson is still sick? Man, that dude needs to live in a bubble like John Travolta in that ’80s movie. That or his kids need to go live with a relative during the season.

  12. BigBlueAL

Even though the Suns are used to playing this fast and frantic every game it is their 5th game in a row on the road and with Markieff Morris ejected hopefully they eventually tire in this half with a somewhat depleted roster.

  13. cwolf

Is boxing out even something that’s discussed by Woodson? It’s a fucking fundamental. I’ve never seen a team as bad at putting bodies on rebounders as the Knicks.

  14. BigBlueAL

Hey man, Knicks playing their first of 4 games in 5 night and the last 2 is a real tough back-to-back in Indy then home vs the Clippers. I would love if the Knicks can pull away and not have to play Melo down the stretch tonight especially since they have a game tomorrow.

I fully expect the Knicks to win tonight but am hoping not too have to squeak by in the end similar to the Pistons game.

  15. ruruland

The Suns are the most physical defense I’ve seen in the west. They look legit to me. This is the most physical game the Knicks have played in all year.

  16. Kahnzy

God I hate that Kevin Durant rake-through foul. The League really needs to look into that, it’s so cheap. But they probably won’t because they don’t like defenders being able to, y’know, defend.

  17. ephus

If Alex Len is a player, Bledsoe comes back and two of next years four first round picks work, suns will be tough.

  18. gmoney_nz

I’m not watching the game but have been watching suns all year – they will make hard push in fourth quarter – Can Knicks hold like they did against Miami? Comments from those watching….

  19. d-mar

We give up switches so goddamn easily, the screens the Suns are setting aren’t even that good. And it ends up with Barbosa being guarded by Stat or K-Mart, which never ends well.

  20. Robtachi

At what point does it occur to Woodson to say “Yo, Melo, maybe stop ISO-ing 18 feet from the basket?”

  21. Nick C.

That was absurd. Dragic went by Felton while Shump slid to the corner and KMart stood there giving him an uncontested layup for the lead.

  22. gmoney_nz

Didn’t mean to Jinx it but Suns have been the best fourth quarter “come-from-behind-push-through-in-the-end” team all year

  23. Kahnzy

I wish I had a never quit-never surrender team to root for

I’m a Knicks fan through and through but with the way the season started I took the Suns as my surrogate-other-team-to-watch. Dragic intrigues me so

  25. Kahnzy

Felton with the bail-out. Doesn’t quite make up for his defense (for lack of a better word), but it’s better than nothing I guess.

  26. Kahnzy

I took two surrogates. One, unfortunately, is Washington. The other, thankfully, is Portland (though their games are often so late I can’t stay up to watch them if I want to be functional at work the next day).

  27. Robtachi

I would love to have Melo watch that tape and explain that possession to me, because I just do not understand.

  28. Kahnzy

Iso-Melo. Gee, who’d have thought a contested 20ft jumper would be what we’d come up with with that strategy.

  29. maxwell_3g

we may win, but to ignore the ridiculous strategy that we employ to try to win and close out games is to ignore the obvious. this will cost us several times this season and likely in the playoffs. why melo and more importantly woodson dont realize this……

  30. Kahnzy

I think Woodson digs deep into the playbook here. I’m predicting a very shocking Iso-Melo play for a contested 18-20fter.

  31. Robtachi

That’s just not the call you make with 2 seconds left in a 2 point game. Probably no other time either, but definitely not now.

  32. Robtachi

That’s the extent of Woodson’s play-calling, and the Suns looked like they knew exactly what was coming.

  33. d-mar

Why when we’re up 2 with the ball is it automatically iso-Melo? Can’t we just run the offense? It’s just so damned predictable.

I took Portland as my other team as well. I miss all the games as I live in New Zealand so games are always on at midday here – league pass is my Savior

  35. Robtachi

I’ve defended him at various points throughout the season, but Melo has made some terrible decisions with the ball tonight.

  36. Will the Thrill

Shumpert flops in the most random situations. Dude, nobody is calling an offensive foul after a rebound where you ran into his backside.

  37. maxwell_3g

was the fat, rich, bald man in the front row, pointing and yelling at melo to run an iso for himself on that last possession the exact caricature of the Knicks fans that we fear are steering this ship, or what?

  38. Unreason

AB missed it, but that was some the best ball movement all night. Knicks had more in the tank than I thought. Anthony way off his game though.

  39. Kahnzy

I took Portland as my other team as well. I miss all the games as I live in New Zealand so games are always on at midday here – league pass is my Savior

Yeah? I lived in NZ for about a year (08-09). Auckland mostly, but I moved around a bit. Best time of my life.

Also, the Knicks are trying to go for the dagger shot. They just need to get points on the board. Time is on their side for the moment, they need to use it.

  40. maxwell_3g

seriously, woodson is a coaching mole at this time. can someone please show him melo’s shooting numbers in these situations since becoming a knick? forget it, he’d probably be convinced that it means that melo must be about to start making them

  41. Kahnzy

Anyone else find Melo’s new commercial (the one with the two guys going to a “psychic” and she says “of course he makes the game winner, he’s Melo) to be the least accurate portrayal of a basketball player in a commercial in, like, ever?

  42. Will the Thrill

Why don’t we try, ya know, doing pick and rolls until the clock runs low? You could have Melo be the ball handler and you would get the exact same shot even if none of them worked.

  43. Robtachi

Well, you can at least say that the flip side of the Knicks’ horrendous offense in OT is that they played really good, intense defense.

  44. Kahnzy

How weird is it that Bargnani is plus 22 tonight?

Because +/- in small sample sizes can be very misleading.

  45. Robtachi

We used to kill D’Antoni for not using that foul to prevent the three, so give it up to Woody for that, at least.

  46. maxwell_3g

i’ll take the win, but iuf the suns or dragic himself had anything left in the OT, that would have been a loss. i guess woodson will have us lose in the playoffs at the end of the games and then defend the iso melo strategy instead of proactively changing strategy

  47. Kahnzy

The more I think about it, the more impressed and pleased I am that Woodson went for the foul to prevent the 3. Most coaches still don’t do that. He’s still a liability, but I’ll take whatever silver linings I can get at this point.

  48. BigBlueAL

Yup, Knicks tied with the Nets for the 8th seed at 15-22. A win tomorrow and they tie the Pistons for the 7th seed at 16-22. Really hope they win tomorrow considering the tough back-to-back later in the week.

  49. yellowboy90

Tyson needs to come back or they need to coach up Aldrich or Tyler because Martin is getting exhausted.

  50. BigBlueAL

I gotta give Woody credit lately. Has seriously reduced Bargs’ minutes and has used Melo at PF more often during games plus the benching of JR for the Heat game. Great job fouling at the end of the game tonight too.

  51. vpac

Definitely not the prettiest win … But at least they won .. I’d this game had taken place in November they would have completely folded and lost the game… Watching the defensive effort in OT is encouraging.

  52. d-mar

Wow, take the win, all I’m reading about is Melo’s bad isos, if the Suns hadn’t run out of gas, blah, blah, blah. They played really good defense in the OT, and did what they had to do against a pretty good Phoenix team. Not pretty, but it’s a win, that’s all that counts.

  53. ephus

    Five!

Bargnani was looking weak at the start of third quarter. He found intensity and the Knicks went on a 9-0 run. Then he sat for a LONG time. Came back with intensity. I know he missed open shots, but I can live with this version of Bargnani.

  54. dtrickey

Good gritty win, especially seeing as this is the type of game they would have lost at the start of the season.

Offense could have clicked a bit better, but otherwise a good effort to keep Phoenix to under 100 in an overtime game.

Gotta give a lot of credit to Phoenix though. They would have to be surprise of the season and Jeff Hornacek would have to be up there in the coach of the year race. Probably depends on whether they can keep win pace up for the rest of the year.

When it’s all said and done, the Knicks most certainly could have done better to protect the 14 advantage they had, but 14 points isn’t that big of a lead against a fast pace team like the Suns.

All up, not a pretty win, but a win is a win. Fairly entertaining game too. Go Knicks.

  55. ruruland

The isolation is the lowest ceiling play but also the highest floor play. There’s a very small chance Melo turns the ball over in an isolation and it’s the most effective way to get a last second shot off.

With the way the Suns were pushing the Knicks offense out tonight, and with how physical the officials allowed the game to get, the chances of a turnover in the screen and roll were increased (the Knicks had an unusually high turnover rate tonight).

The Suns were going under screens with Felton, too, and many of the passes the Knicks made had to be threaded.

That’s a very good defensive team (at least tonight) given the freedom to play at maximum physicality.

  56. ruruland

It should be noted that the Knicks pick and roll was often resulting in an isolation, either from Felton or for whoever Felton passed the ball to bail out the possession with 10 or fewer seconds left.

Tucker is a very good defender. Was last year against Melo, too.

  57. maxwell_3g

OK, maybe d-mar is right. why complain about our stupid end of the game strategies when after all, we did win at home against the suns in OT. PARTY TIME!!!!! i can almost guarantee we will lose at least one playoff game (assuming we make it) do to stupid end of game strategies that favor iso ball. but hey, why talk about it now. lets just wait until it happens and then bitch about it after the fact

  58. ruruland

“Anyone else find Melo’s new commercial (the one with the two guys going to a “psychic” and she says “of course he makes the game winner, he’s Melo) to be the least accurate portrayal of a basketball player in a commercial in, like, ever?”

It was probably shot when he still had a high % in those situations heading into the season.

  59. prezs2reprsntme

    @ruru

here’s a theory, just based off hunches — i haven’t really looked into it. interested in your take on it:

Iso’s are a solid end game play if you can get off solid shots, ideally not only shots the offensive player wants but good shots as well (both are important…no fan wants a shitty jump shooter jumpshooting no matter how good he thinks he is at it, ala rudy gay). Some of the 4th qtr/OT iso’s today ended up being tough, doubled, “dirty” looks instead of traditional 1 on 1, mano y mano Iso’s (which melo likes but has kinda sucked at last 2 yrs).

Don’t you think the credible THREAT of non-iso plays (as well as other players making a shot) would decrease the odds of those dirty iso plays? To put it in baseball terms, even IF you make Iso’s the fastball, you still gotta throw a breaking ball every now and then. More often than the knicks throw it. Granted they had the melo felton play late in the 4th, which is 1 more of those than they usually do per game…but still. Besides, how many times have we seen the knicks run a non iso play in the clutch result in a turnover? hardly at all!

  60. AvonBarksdale

i’ve hated on melo for not passing a lot but you guys are def. expecting too much the shots have been falling and his passing has been awesome, felton hit the 3 pointer on a melo pass late in the game, he passed it to shump that other game..he’s been hitting all kinds of shots on the offense and even running pick and roll with Amare a a regular basis now. We should be on a 7 game win streak right now and melo is rebounding/passing great…i can see if you bitch about him sleeping on defense a few times but thats most likely just a permanent flaw in his mental focus…the shots he takes tired that he shouldn’t be even hoisting up in his mind and his heart he probably thinks he can make them and his numbers suck but his play has earned him some trust to turn those numbers around too…i would’ve rather watch hardaway hoist those shots just from a logical who has energy left in the tank and wants to put up some 3′s real quick but it’s all gambling…i love iso melo i love the knicks i love big brother

  61. ruruland

Yes, I think in general the Knicks and Melo need to continue to decrease isolation plays.

Both Melo and the Knicks percentage of those plays is down from the last year. The Knicks have a bit of a dearth of playmaking, but I’d like to see Melo and JR in more pnr, both as roller and ballhandler.

That said, in a late-game milk the clock situation, the isolation might be the best play.

But I agree. The less the Knicks and Melo run i, the more effective it’s likely to be. If there’s a mismatch and its generating tilts and doubles, milk it.
