  1. cwolf

Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Fan since the ’80s.

Whatever mistakes The Penguin makes tonight are all Beno’s fault.

  2. dtrickey

Hey gang. Little off topic for the game thread, but is anyone reading much into the Knicks being a landing spot for Bynum?

Would love to still see Murry get some burn tonight. Fingers crossed Woody has a look at the 2 pg lineup at some stage, because I think that’ll be the only way he could get meaningful minutes.

  3. Brian Cronin

Gotta love the moron Pistons. “Hey, let’s keep shooting from the outside when the Knicks are vulnerable inside!” Please continue to be stupid, Pistons!

  4. ephus

Bargnani had not hit a corner three all year.

Between that shot and the reverse layup, he is tantalizing.

  5. Frank O.

I particularly liked Bargs’ faked pass on the drive that no one bought, but he made it anyway.

  6. dtrickey

Dang we have to clog the paint! AB looking good early, just need him to look good late!

Also, what does it say on Shumps sleeve? Something about tacos?

  7. Mental Masochist

I suppose if Beno didn’t play over Tour’e there would be no potential scapegoat other than Shump.

  8. Nick C.

I read Melo said he noticed while sitting out watching that they needed to be patient on offense and that if they were open he would find them (even late in games). So far he has been pretty much true to his word.

  9. Frank O.

    AP
    Jan. 7
New York – New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson Tuesday denounced Beno Udrih for causing the cold snap that has enveloped New York City.
Flabbergasted reporters asked Woodson why he would level such a charge at his back up point guard.
“He showed me the temperature on his iPhone,” Woodson said, raising his eyebrows. “You have to consider that.”
Udrih merely shook his head when told of Woodson’s comments.

  10. ephus

Last two plays, Melo has moved the ball. Each time it has led to a wide open shot that was missed. Beno’s fault.

  11. Owen

Their guards are really bad. Jennings and Smith, I can’t think of a worse pair to acquire as running mates for Drummond and Monroe.

Melo is playing well, I like what he is doing.

Amare really really can’t guard anyone. Nor can Bargnani. It’s going to be an embarrassing night on the interior.

This has been basketball analysis with Captain Obvious…..

  12. Frank O.

Kidding aside, Beno has a tendency to dribble into traps, or to the baseline with no real plan, and he picks up the ball.

  13. Frank O.

Monroe and Drummond seem to be very effective in the paint and the pistons keep jacking up threes…the worst thee shooting team in the league…

  14. maxwell_3g

all the stupid shit that JR has done, and woodson lets it all go, but untying another guys shoe is what pisses him off. unbelievable. woodson is such a ckown

  15. Kahnzy

all the stupid shit that JR has done, and woodson lets it all go, but untying another guys shoe is what pisses him off. unbelievable. woodson is such a ckown

    But at least he’s consistent!

  16. BigBlueAL

There are replays all over twitter of JR apparently trying to untie Monroe’s shoe laces during the 1st quarter.

  17. ephus

Even with all of the dunks by Monroe and Drummond, Knicks are winning. Gotta keep Bynum, Jennings and Billups in the perimeter.

BTW, Drummond has lost all of the baby fat. He no longer looks anything like Zach Randolph.

  18. maxwell_3g

Josh Smith shooting threes. if there is anything in the NBA as frustrating as JR…..take it from a resident of Atlanta

  19. Kahnzy

I root harder for STAT than I do probably any other Knick, with the possible exception of TH2…but does anyone remember the last time Amar’e actually passed out of the post?

  20. Nick C.

It’s a shame that despite all the good things Murry showed he appears to be back to DNP-CD status with Felton back.

  21. Brian Cronin

Jennings/Smith/Caldwell-Pope 2 for 15 (and the team is 0 for 7 from three).

    Monroe/Drummond 8 for 10

    Smart coaching there, Cheeks!

  22. ephus

Since Amare rarely draws the double anymore, I do not want him passing. IIRC, he passed out of the double in the home game against Toronto.

  23. Kikuchiyo

It’s too bad they’re not playing this game in Detroit. They could rebuild a couple of schools with all these bricks.

  24. ephus

Melo executed the jump stop to get an easy shot. In the same situation in Dallas, he crashed into an offensive foul.

  25. er

Melo is 6-11 I’m pretty sure all 5 misses are layupss. If he could finish I think his fg% would be much higher

  26. Kahnzy

Between Smith and Jennings, I think Detroit might actually have a more overrated roster than we do.

  27. maxwell_3g

I don’t think Jennings is that bad. josh smith is pretty awful, but its strange that the highest bidder was the pistons, the team that josh was destined for failure with. in this era of spread offense, the idea that josh would be playing the 3 (after his years in Atlanta) is hilarious

  28. maxwell_3g

and khanzy, I am fully acknowledging that if I rooted for a team that Jennings played for, I would most likely hate him

  29. ephus

Breen is excoriating Shumpert for the switch, but I think Bargnani was at fault. He simply does not know how to recover to his own man.

  30. Kahnzy

Can’t Bargs have a game where he doesn’t hit a stretch where he piles up misses?

I believe the solution is obvious. Play Bargs the entire 1st quarter and then sit him for the rest of the game.

  31. Kahnzy

I wonder if Josh Smith is actually confused as to why he gets benched. Say what you want about Detroit’s basketball IQ, Cheeks has at least had the smarts to bench Smith when he starts jacking up contested 3’s.

  32. Owen

How they added Smith and Jennings, it boggles the mind. They are the team that should have gotten Kyle Lowry….

  33. maxwell_3g

so, woodson worries about team being big. do you think that he is noticing that we are blowing the doors off the biggest team in the east?

  34. maxwell_3g

this has been our most energetic quarter of the year by far.

im also sensing that breen is not a big josh smith fan

  35. dtrickey

Lolz! That was the most clamatous 30 seconds of basketball you will see. Love the hustle and energy though.

  36. Donnie Walsh

I believe the solution is obvious. Play Bargs the entire 1st quarter and then sit him for the rest of the game

Riley started doing this with Charles Smith in 1994… He’d call the first four plays of the game to iso-Smith, then Mason would come in and play the next 38 minutes… (Too bad Mason’s not on this roster…)

  37. ephus

If the Knicks push while Melo sits at the start of the fourth quarter, we might have seen the last of him for the night.

    Free Tour’e.

  38. ephus

Tour’e has been burned on each defensive possession this quarter. Monroe got free because Murry did not get over the screen.

  39. maxwell_3g

woodson was going to take Toure out for thus units performance??? WTH?? hes the only one not shitting on himself

  40. Kahnzy

Toronto lost tonight. If we close this game out, we’re one game closer to the top of the heap.

The garbage heap. But hey, that’s still in the playoffs and avoids Miami and Indiani in the 1st round.

  41. ephus

Murry played bad defense on every possession. He could not stay in front of Bynum.

    I wish it was different.

  42. maxwell_3g

    Dear Lord.
I don’t ask for much. Please let there be video of JR messing with a Piston player’s shoelaces tonight. Also, please let the MSG crew find it during this game and please oh please let Breen and Clyde comment on it. I won’t ask for anything else for a long time (as I will be laughing hysterically). Thanks. max

    Seconded

  44. DS

While I don’t like that it’s necessary for Woody to play Felton and K-Mart and risk either getting injured right now, it’s nice to see he understands what his best lineup option is.

  45. Owen

Andre Miller would be a great fit in Detroit…..

    this is disguzting….

How the hell we let them back into this game baffles me…

  46. Kahnzy

Hey, this provides a brand new opportunity for us to see yet another boneheaded way for the Knicks to lose a game. What do you think it’ll be this time? Felton running out of breath on a potential game-winning fast break and quitting at mid court? Melo fouling Drummond away from the ball with under 2 minutes to go? Jennings just thinking about running a PnR so Bargs runs out onto the court off the bench to switch onto him, thereby getting a tech for too many players on the court? A Piston untying JR’s shoes, which he promptly kneels down to tie giving his man a wide open layup? The possibilities are endless!

  47. Nick C.

Huge three by Melo and block by Kenyon. Alas Josh Smith hits his daily three and Felton gets stripped.

  48. maxwell_3g

the pistons are literally doing everything they can NOT to win this game. bricking 3’s, stuopid passes, missing bunnies, missing ft’s

  49. Kahnzy

So what’re we thinking here? I’m guessing Woodson digs deep into the playbook and goes with an Iso-Melo just to catch Detroit off guard.

  50. Kikuchiyo

I’m rooting for overtime so Josh Smith can get his triple double (points, rebounds, turnovers).

  51. Brian Cronin

I can’t believe I had to root for Charlie fucking Villanueva to be missing free throws at this point in the game to maintain a lead!

  52. Brian Cronin

This Pistons team is one of the few teams in the NBA with worse fundamentals than the Knicks.

  53. Owen

My god, that was awful by the Pistons. Holy Crap. Thank god.

Seriously, Jennings and Smith are the worst.

  54. Brian Cronin

Melo pushed him with two hands and could have been called.

I guess, but man, what the fuck was Smith thinking? It wasn’t like the push altered the shot. It was just a horrible shot that had very, very little chance of going in. Such an awful decision. That the ball was in his hands with basically the option to do whatever he wants is just insane.

  55. Nick C.

Melo redeems himself for meandering the clock away to get called for the charge driving one on two by blocking good old Josh Smith and getting the loose ball. He’s a one man team.

  56. Frank O.

How can a team play beautifully and then do this.
A win, but hardly satisfying. Troubling really.
Melo has had to carry them.

  57. maxwell_3g

I haven’t really seen this magical melo game that everyone else has seen apparently, but hey, a win is a win

  58. Kahnzy

I seem to remember that when a team wins more than one game in a row, there’s a term for it…but I just can’t remember what it is

  59. Robtachi

That last Melo possession is not on him. It is fucking inexcusable how willing this team is to just stand around and gawk at him with absolutely no movement for 20 seconds. This always happens in end-game situations which indicates to me that they are being COACHED to do so. Which is also fucking inexcusable.

But this Caramel Anton is pretty gud doe.

  60. Owen

6-7 from three will make anyone look good….

I am not complaining about Melo tonight, except for that one ISO sequence at the end, which was brutal….

    He played great.

  61. Kikuchiyo

I feel like I’m getting a clinic on how not to finish basketball games. We’ve covered all the bases in recent “classes”:
*poor clock and time out management
    *lousy and non-existent plays
    *no preparation for game situations
    *no communication between players
    *lethargic, who-cares defense

    When’s the exam? I think I’m ready.

  62. yellowboy90

I would have liked to seen similar movement on that late possession by Melo like they had in the Houston game. Even though Shump missed the shot it was a good look.

  63. ephus

Tour’e Murry had a chance to earn PT tonight. He was awful defensively. His poor positioning allowed Detroit to get open shots in every possession when Murry was on the court. Don’t blame Woodson for keeping Felton in (since Beno could not go in the second half) even though he has two horrible turnovers in a row.

  64. maxwell_3g

as much as I blame melo, I think robtachi has a point. the last iso possession may not really be on him. the plan seems to be just to watch him. no screens, no movement, nothing. I think that has to be mostly on woodson. its unbelievable that we consider that a closing strategy

  65. DRed

It’s a chicken and egg thing with those end of game plays. Probably some blame to go around on both sides. But it sure is crazy.

  66. BigBlueAL

Apparently Udrih hurt his knee and is getting an MRI tomorrow which explains why Murry played in the 4th quarter instead.

  67. maxwell_3g

just saw the video. I can confirm that JR did make an overt act towards the untying Monroe’s shoe at the line. monroe seems hip to the game and JR aborted the mission. I actually like him a little for this. basically, hes never been held accountable for anything important, so hes thumbing his nose at everyone over this dumb shit

  68. maxwell_3g

ephus, I think you’re being a little hard on toure. the worse defense in that part of the game resulted from senseless switching, which led to amare ushering Bynum to the hoop unimpeded

  69. Owen

Does CAA represent Wally? His defense of Bargs was sort of hilarious….

At least Hahn kind of keeps things real….

  70. johnno

Don’t look now, but the Knicks are 1-1/2 games out of the 8 seed.

On a completely unrelated subject, over the last 4 years, the Pacers have been the healthiest team in all of pro sports. Aside from Granger, no one on that team EVER gets hurt. This year, everyone of their top 9 guys has played at least 30 games.

  71. ephus

I want Tour’e to be strong. I was rooting for him in the 4th quarter. I focused on him on each possession. I encourage everyone to study him during those 4 minutes. Either his man scored, or the guy freed up by Tour’e needing a switch scored. He just could not stay in front of his man.

  72. FrankGrimes

Toure still young and raw. Prone to being out of position, as are many rooks. As Clyde said many times during Texas trip his positive impact on defensive end was due to actually putting in the effort to play defense. Put it this way he is the best defender we have at the guard position because of athleticism/effort, not basketball IQ. Still should see minutes at PG.

  73. ephus

I agree with everything FrankGrimes wrote about Tour’e. He is young and raw. He should be the best defensive Knick PG. He puts out the effort on d. Lack of effort guarantees failure, but effort does not guarantee success. He has to get around screens like he did in Dallas and Houston. Tonight, not so much.

  74. ruruland

6-7 from three will make anyone look good….

I haven’t really seen this magical melo game that everyone else has seen apparently, but hey, a win is a win

    Lol.

You know who isolates more than Melo? James Harden.

  75. Brian Cronin

”I didn’t get the shot I wanted. I’m still beating myself up for that,” Smith said. ”I could’ve been a little more aggressive and try to put the initiative on the referees to make a call. It was a shot that is definitely going to be with me until the next game so I can get it out of my head.”

I was going to say that at least their dumb Smith is more self-aware than the Knicks’ dumb Smith, but just like Smith’s post-game comments the other day in Houston, it is unlikely that either of their candor is any indication that they won’t be right back to their old tricks next game. Josh will continue to shoot from outside when he is a terrible outside shooter and JR will continue to make bad decisions because of Beno Udrih.

  76. d-mar

Durant took 34 of his team’s 85 shots tonight in an 11 pt. loss to Utah (and made 14) If Melo had a game like that, he’d be condemned as a ball stopping hog.

But as Owen has pointed out, if Melo continues his solid play, he’s a “borderline All Star”

    What a joke

  77. nicos

I think JR is self-aware it’s just that his self doesn’t give a shit. During a timeout after his two turnovers early in the fourth he was leaning on the scorers table just staring off into space while Woody talked- I don’t know how you can keep a guy in the game that has clearly checked out.

  78. Owen

    What a joke

The Thunder were without Ibaka as well as Westbrook, which had something to do with Durant’s ball dominance.

And Durant, despite taking all those shots, still posted 48 points on a 56.65% ts% with no turnovers. He also rounded out the box score with four steals of his own, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.

So, despite missing all those shots he was still more productive than Melo, who had maybe his best game of the season.

That’s the thing about Melo. He goes out and plays a great game, hitting 6-7 from three, playing excellent defense, and he still falls well short of a bonafide superstar game.

But hat tip to him, he played great last night, as I noted upthread.
