2013 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Bulls

The Knicks’ winning streak is now the third longest in Knicks history and they have a chance to get closer to the second longest, which was held by the Knick team that came the closest to winning a title since the Knicks’ last title in 1973, the 1993-94 Knicks. What’s amazing is that the Knicks need to win two more games in a row just to have the third longest winning streak in the NBA this season! How crazy is that?

Anyhow, this is a big game and luckily for the Knicks, the Bulls have a frontcourt that is just as banged up as the Knicks. The Bulls will be without Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson tonight. Luol Deng is a game-time decision but the Bulls are listing him as probable.

So even though Tyson Chandler and Kenyon Martin will both be out tonight, the Knicks should still win this one. The NBA’s leading scorer, Carmelo Anthony (feels nice to say that), will likely have another good scoring game, especially if Deng (who always does a good job hounding Melo) is out tonight. Apparently even if Deng plays, though, he’ll be on a minutes limit, which is great news for the Knicks.

Let’s go Knicks! Come on, Lucky Double Seven!

As a side note, poster ephus will be appearing on Kudlow Tonight at 7pm on CNBC. It’ll end just in time for the Knicks game, so give it a look see!

    COPE COPE?

“What’s amazing is that the Knicks need to win two more games in a row just to have the second longest winning streak in the NBA this season! ”

not sure what you mean, Miami obviously first and the Clippers won 17 in a row early on.

  2. Brian Cronin

Thanks, Jon, I meant to write third-longest. I corrected it! Thirteen wins in a row and three other teams have won more in a row just this season! How does that make any sense?

  3. johnlocke

Odds Melo finishes 1st team all NBA? Despite leading the league in scoring and by most accounts being 2nd or 3rd in the MVP race, it’s probably still unlikely because he plays PF/SF right?

Probably will be Paul, Kobe, Lebron, Durant, Duncan/Gasol most likely. The last Knick to be on the All-NBA first team was 23 years ago! Patrick Ewing in 1990 I believe. How crazy is that?

  4. Brian Cronin

Yeah, Melo will get votes and clearly make it on the 2nd team (for just the second time in his career) but sadly he just happens to play the same position as the two guys that the rest of the NBA believes are better than him, so unless there’s a big change in the league’s view of Durant in the next week (which is possible, the Knicks defeating the Thunder certainly helped) than Melo will likely have to settled for second team. Which is still very impressive!

  5. Brian Cronin

Looking into it, there was another season where there were three winning streak of 15 games or longer (two of them by the same team, the Phoenix Suns). This would be the first time four teams did it, though. So let’s hope that the Knicks help make some history!

  6. maxwell_3g

how crazy has this season become??? I have Chris Copeland starting for my fantasy team tonight….didnt see that coming

  7. johnlocke

Missed it. Ephus if there is a link to the video at a later date, let us know!

    Brian Cronin:
Yay, ephus! I just watched his appearance on The Kudlow Report. You did done good! This London thing just sounds idiotic.

  8. maxwell_3g

nba rules will not prohibit kurt from taking an office job and continuing to sit on the bench and hanging out in the locker room though, right? i would feel better if kurt was still around to share his wisdom

  9. Hubert Davis

You see the celtics gave pierce & Garnett the night off so they don’t have to play back to back nights? That’s the shit I’m talking about. They’re going to be rested & ready. We should be doing the same thing tomorrow in Cleveland but I doubt we will.

  10. Brian Cronin

Obviously yes, it is good for them to be rested, but I don’t think it will make a big difference. If they still had Rondo, sure, but not anymore.

  11. AvonBarksdale

The hotties by the Knicks bench are obviously placed by The Bulls to distract our team…

  12. cgreene

Hubert, you gotta back off the ledge a little, pal. The Knicks are actually good. Garnett cannot dominate going up against Tyson Chandler. Chandler may not have been great this year but he will give Garnett a very hard time scoring. The thing that has killed us this year is quick guards beating us off the dribble who can score. The Celtics dont have ANY of those. Zero. That’s what would draw Tyson away from Garnett and free him up to score from the outside. Garnett can’t score inside one on one anymore. He needs Rondo’s penetration.

  13. maxwell_3g

it looks like cope will be able to get that spot up, straight away 3 all game. this is an interesting lineup. if boozer cant punish them in the paint, the knicks have a decided advantage in matchups

  14. yellowboy90

Boozer is like 5-7 ft off of Cope. The 4/5 pnr should work all night and not just to get Melo easy points but to get Cope some very open 3s

  15. Juany8

This is fun. I’m having a pretty damn stressful day and I’m really glad I decided to tune in on this game. Grenwald needs to win GM of the year unanimously, how many players can you pick up out of the literal garbage head. Rasheed Wallace contributed serious minutes to the Knicks and I’m sure every person here would love to have him. Celtics fans didn’t feel the same way when he retired 2 years ago lol. Seriously though, half the players on the team were not playing in the NBA last year, and not because they were young and in college lol.

  16. Hubert Davis

Let them back too easily. Should take a team like that a little longer to cut 17 to 7.

  17. johnlocke

This. Our defense has still been solid. Feels like the shots Melo was getting toward the end of the quarter were much tougher than normal…..this is gonna be a grind

    Hubert Davis:
Let them back too easily.Should take a team like that a little longer to cut 17 to 7.

  18. d-mar

Hey Jimmy Butler, once you get into Melo’s head, let me know what you find.

(I can only hope future Knicks opponents say equally stupid things about Carmelo.)

  19. maxwell_3g

i think what we are seeing is that copeland is kind of like melo on d too, although not as good (or more bad). he seems to have a reasonable amount of strength to bang against a back to the basket guy, while he struggles more with lateral movement against quicker 3′s

  20. Nick C.

Copeland is pretty deadly on the open looks, if he could develop anything off the dribble he could have a nice career.

  21. johnlocke

Grunwald is the man. And in a weird way injuries have helped us to develop players like Cope and more minutes for guys like Prigs and Kenyon. We’re deep

Pretty harsh by Marv there, I don’t think it’s out of the question the Knicks can take on the Heat even if they’re not exactly going to be favored lol.

  23. johnlocke

He’s best in small spurts like Novak. His motor is seriously lacking

    Nick C.:

  24. AnonymousODG

So exactly what has to happen for CHI to fall below ATL? I assume CHI owns the tiebreaker?

  25. Juany8

Melo needs to play a little more controlled right now, Deng has been a terrible matchup for him all year but he can’t be forcing shots.

  26. johnlocke

He seems to have done so…

    d-mar:

  27. AnonymousODG

Looks like JR will have a good game. Thankfully, he isn’t foul-prone. Otherwise the refs would just shut him down like they’re shutting down this entire game.

  28. johnlocke

Melo is 5/15 from the field …He really needs to stop forcing

    Juany8:
Melo needs to play a little more controlled right now, Deng has been a terrible matchup for him all year but he can’t be forcing shots.

  29. AnonymousODG

Felton with a failed Prigs impression. At least it’s obvious how disappointed he was in himself.

  30. johnlocke

Dude I am relaxed. Secondly, only one Bulls player has more than 2 fouls. Deng has 3.

er: Dude he’s about to foul out the whole team relax

  31. AnonymousODG

er: Dude he’s about to foul out the whole team relax

Agreed. He drew 4 personal fouls from the Bulls in the second quarter alone. Keep feeding it to him and Deng (3 PFs) might have to sit with 4 fouls until well into the fourth. Even Butler and Boozer (2 PFs each) might have to sit early with 3 fouls each since they have to cover Melo.

I’d feature Melo hardcore to start the third.

  32. Douglas

    johnlocke:
Melo is 5/15 from the field …He really needs to stop forcing

Melo is getting bludgeoned in the post and the refs aren’t calling it. That Rip Hamilton “steal” was actually Hamilton tomahawk chopping him on the hand.

  33. ruruland

The old foul Melo every time. Typically works (see Utah and Clippers series in ’06 and ’10). Forces officials to change what they call a foul in real time, typically results in really good ratio for defense.

  34. johnlocke

No doubt…Refs haven’t given him a good whistle all season. In the playoffs this is how tough defensive teams will play him though. Anyway just hoping the team can keep their composure and get the win in the 2nd half

Douglas: Melo is getting bludgeoned in the post and the refs aren’t calling it. That Rip Hamilton “steal” was actually Hamilton tomahawk chopping him on the hand.

  35. AnonymousODG

Man… we need Melo to post up more. Gotta draw some more fouls and get Boozer and Deng either out, or off their rhythm.

  36. Douglas

That Melo/Felton PnR that solely exists to get a guard to switch onto Melo in the post is genius.

  37. ephus

That was the most gorgeous offensive series I have seen from the Knicks. Felton/Melo PnR forces the switch. Bulls forced to double ‘Melo in the post because he is being covered by the PG. Felton swings ball to weak side. Kidd swings to corner, gets ball back, penetrates to lane, kicks to Felton. Felton is still being covered by the PF, gets all the way to the rim. PG can’t help off of ‘Melo, who is in position to finish. So, Felton gets the easy reverse layup.

    Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

  38. AnonymousODG

Alright, Novak isn’t any worse than Copeland on Boozer. We have to bring him in and hope the help defense can hold up.

Also, we moved away from the post up game with Melo and now Boozer is starting to destroy us. Can’t let that continue.

  39. cgreene

Felton is very quietly having a great stretch. In fact I think that he is the lynchpin to having a long run. If he penetrates and finishes the way he has and we have 2 healthy big men we can be very good.

  40. max fisher-cohen

It’s like there’s some invisible force at play here. It doesn’t matter who gets hurt. The Knicks still play well.

  41. Brian Cronin

The Bulls’ only real chance against the Knicks is their frontcourt, which they don’t have tonight. So this will be an awesome second half as the Knicks just keep pulling away.

  42. Juany8

    cgreene:

He’s a pretty solid PG/third offensive option, he does a lot of things at an average to above average level, people focus on his few negatives a bit too much. I’d take him over Chalmers certainly.

  43. yellowboy90

That layup must have been too much for Prigs brain to process. He has to reboot the system.

  44. smokinjoe

I hope Woody is chewing their a $$..hate when these Knicks hang their heads over things dont go their way

  45. johnlocke

    Turnovers. Bad ball movement.

I was about to excoriate the Knicks for doubling Butler in the post when he was being defended by Kidd and leaving the 3 wide open, but the Knicks let Kidd cover Butler in the post the next time, and he gave up a conventional 3 point play.

It looks like Kidd cannot handle Butler’s size and quickness.

  47. maxwell_3g

nate is special. i always liked his spunk, but he has no ability to control himself. lil man’s complex

Brrrrr. Playoff level game preview with 6 players unavailable? I’m frightened that you’re actually correct.

  51. Frank O.

Suddenly getting out hustled. The two stupid lazy TOs really triggered this momentum shift along with Cope going to the bench

  52. AnonymousODG

I’m baffled that Kidd has been left in. Honestly, White is a far greater shooting threat than he is. And Kidd’s stellar defense is barely visible tonight — especially when he has to play extended minutes.

  53. BigBlueAL

Ive made it very clear I have no problems playing the Celtics but the Bulls could pick up 5 guys from the stands and sweep the Knicks.

  54. bocker84

  56. BigBlueAL

Doesnt matter if we lose this game obviously but really would love to win tonight especially after dominating the first 2 1/2 quarters.

Melo trying to win a scoring title not trying to win the game? Anyone else agree? I think I found what’s gonna derail the knicks

  59. BigBlueAL

Tonight is further proof how bad the Knicks perimeter D is especially with no rim protection.

  60. johnlocke

Good thing they’re in the Heats bracket. I really hate Nate…what an ass

    BigBlueAL:

  61. cgreene

This team is tired, injured and coming off a 13 game win streak. I am willing to let this slide. If we go down 10 I’d pull Melo. Could care less we didn’t beat Bulls this year. Never gonna see them.

  62. Brian Cronin

Obviously the Knicks’ weakness is players like Nate Robinson, but yeah, I definitely did not see this coming.

As for Melo, the guy obviously has to score. It has nothing to do with the title.

Yea but melo had to play more in the flow of the offense. A few times he would take contested shots or not pass out of the double team.

  65. BigBlueAL

On the bright side, if the Bulls do win tonight they gain 1/2 a game on Atlanta for the 5th seed. Dont want them at 6 with the slight possibility the Knicks fall to 3rd and screw that dont want a Pacers-Bulls 1st round because I would have no rooting interest there. Let the Haws play the Pacers and root for them to pull off an upset lol.

  66. Brian Cronin

Although it IS an interesting question. Does Melo go for the title down the stretch? As in not take any games off/play limited minutes. I think he does. Woodson seemed to suggest that he will, as well.

  67. johnlocke

That’s how I felt until we were up by 17 in the 3rd quarter then farted the lead away with numbskull decision making and Kidds inability to shoot against teams not named the Heat or Thunder

    cgreene:

  68. SSS

Call me crazy, but I kind of think we pull this out. Think our shots are going to start falling again, and even during this rough stretch we’ve still been getting good looks.

  69. AnonymousODG

Our guards aren’t even trying to get past screens. I’ve watched them intently the last 5 screens that the Bulls have set. Kidd literally hugs the pick guy making it look like he’s completely stymied and just gives up. Felton basically did the same thing, acting like some sniper took him out on a subpar pick and gave up a wide open look from 3 pt land (which mercifully missed).

It’s atrocious and something I never thought I’d see from either of them. They just don’t want to run anymore. They’re just hoping the Bulls miss.

  70. BigBlueAL

d-mar: That’s all true, however the media take on this game will no doubt be that the Knicks can’t beat good defensive teams

Funny part is they are losing because of their horrible D, scoring hasnt been a problem tonight.

  72. SSS

I don’t mean to complain, but…are the Bulls somehow exempt from the prohibition on hand checking?

  73. maxwell_3g

shump completely owned nate on that defensive possession. can we get cope in there on offense, please???

  77. Brian Cronin

What a terrible shot by Nate. You gotta go for the three here, right? I say if JR takes it, he makes it. Or remember Melo’s three against Chicago last Easter? Good memories!

  78. SSS

OK, so I say we take a three here, and end the game in regulation one way or another. As much as I’d like to see them pull this out, I think I’d rather lose in regulation than put another 5 minutes on their tired legs.

  79. maxwell_3g

clutch by melo. that being said, if this goes overtime, i dont want to see melo anymore. kidd either

  80. johnlocke

karma deserves to bite Nate in the ass for his stupid celebrating

maxwell_3g: yes, we certainly have passed the point of no return at this point

  81. mr.JayP

Mentally/swagger wise I think this will just add to our increasing confidence.

  82. EB

  84. ruruland

Melo finally getting a couple calls. Could have called that one on him there. Bulls still getting great whistle, as they have all season in this series. trying to figure that shit out. Knicks don’t know how to play physical right up to the edge.

  85. d-mar

I know it sucks that guys are playing a ton of minutes, but I really really really want to win this game

Physical teams really get in the knicks’ heads. Team plays hard Knicks don’t get a few calls and then start complaining/ stop playing.

  90. maxwell_3g

  92. AnonymousODG

This is ridiculous. They’re just jacking up shots with tired legs and tired arms. Oh well.

  93. Juany8

Well the streak’s been fun while it lasted, at some point you’re going to lose if Carmelo Anthony is your center to finish games. Amazing how many wide open 3′s the knicks bricked in the second half, dissapointing to see.

  94. maxwell_3g

    BigBlueAL:
Wouldve rather have lost in regulation than to continue to let Nate shit on us.

the last thing on anyone’s mind should be Nate. he will always be an entertaining player on aerage teams and a bench warmer on good teams

  95. BigBlueAL

Cant complain about the streak ending but man really at the hands of Nate freaking Robinson and a Bulls team missing Noah and Rose. Ugh.

  96. Brian Cronin

Novak having taken 1 shot attempt this entire game is sickening.

Yeah, that is definitely a fair point. It is so easy to forget about your kick-out three-point shooter. Look at the Louisville/Michigan game. Hancock was 4 for 4 from three in the first half and did not get another shot until like 2 minutes left in the game (a three, which he also nailed).

  97. ruruland

Much rather not go into the playoffs on huge winning streak. Bulls play with amazing amount of confidence against us. But, they’re in the Heat’s side of bracket.

  98. AnonymousODG

By far, the worst game I have ever seen from Kidd.

Once again, Novak taking only one shot attempt this entire game is just inconceivable.

CHI delirious at taking a win from an 8-man roster (since Woodson refused to sub in White) is just hilarious. Guess only a sh1tty desperate team would feel as elated.

  99. BigBlueAL

Wont be surprised if an exhausted Knicks team loses tomorrow in Cleveland which would most likely setup a winner takes the 2 seed game on Sunday. Ugh.

Hopefully the Nets can win in Indy tomorrow and the Knicks have enough left in the tank in Cleveland.

Even with an 8-man roster that game was our to wins. They stole a win from us.

  101. johnlocke

How woody only played Novak 12 minutes when we couldn’t make open shots and played the 40 yr old Kidd 37 minutes is what is really inconceivable. Makes no damn sense. Not like Kidd was doing Kidd-like things out there either

  102. jon abbey

that was on Kidd, just zero threat on offense and a refusal to try to foul Boozer out down the stretch. I was rooting hard for the win, but kind of glad we lost so now Woodson can get some guys some rest. and I don’t know how you can’t love Nate Robinson, even when he acts like a dick.

individual rebounds are really a deceptive stat, so much of rebounding is team context as we saw tonight with Melo and JR combining for 33 boards (!!!).

  103. max fisher-cohen

It was REALLY good for NY to lose that game. makes it very unlikely for NY’s worst case scenario of first round vs. bulls, second round (if they make it) vs. Indiana. The Bulls could be extremely dangerous in general if Rose comes back and plays alright.

  104. Brian Cronin

Yeah, I never liked how Nate celebrated, even when he was a Knick, but I like the guy overall. He was unfairly treated like shit by D’Antoni then unfairly treated like shit (to a lesser degree) by Doc and then he would likely have been treated like shit by Thibs if injuries didn’t force Thibs to use him. He’s a true underdog. But yeah, the dude celebrates way too much.

Woodson aint resting nobody anytime soon. 2 seed still in play and Knicks cant afford to lose out. Plus they dont have enough healthy bodies to rest players.

  106. smokinjoe

okay I know we were undermanned, but is anyone else concerned with our lack of a backup plan when the 3 point shot doesn’t fall..or am I making too much of this and the Bulls truly do have our number?

Does anyone remember a 3 ptr falling for us in the second half..other than that JR Smith one with about 2 min in regulation? What worries me is that those completly open shots that Copeland and Kidd bricked just seemed like this Bulls mental block..that and those 2 TO leading to Jimmy Butler fast breaks..what a turning point

While don’t get me wrong, the Hawks will be absolutely pushovers at the #6 seed, I still don’t think you should root for the #3 seed since the Knicks wouldn’t have homecourt in the second round.

Exactly. I mean of the Knicks cant beat the Celtics in the playoffs then it dont matter if they are the 1,2,3 or 4 seed. No way in hell they should give up homecourt in the 2nd round to the Pacers just to avoid the Celtics.

Plus its still not a lock that the Bulls wont finish 6th.
