2013-14 Game Thread: Knicks @ Bucks

Tyson Chandler finally returns!

We shall soon see if he was rushed back or if he is legitimately healthy. I sure as heck hope it is the latter.

The Bucks are the worst team in the NBA so, well, it sure would be nice for the Knicks to beat them.

Let’s go Knicks!

That’s the thing, though, they likely win this game and then whammo, Dolan has a reason to keep Woodson. “He got Chandler back and he won! See, I knew he should be the coach!”

  2. AvonBarksdale

We suck and our record sucks and we don’t show up to play and play down to the competition but maybe with the egos and mentality of this team we need the coach to play into that crap for instance this bucks team sucks worse than us maybe we start Murray and let Cole play big minutes early after Tyson rests because its the Bucks and we should be able to win no matter who fucking plays because we are a better team? OJ Mayo is not playing, this shouldn’t be a close game at all but we keep finding ways to lose and win ugly against teams trying to let us win, if we can’t take advantage of this and get a look at Cole I dunno are we saving Aldrich for the playoffs? Is that why we burn out hobbled players coming back too soon from injury to lose to the celtics by 41 points…Tyson tell me!!!!

  3. Kahnzy

I worry that Tyson, as good and important as he is, won’t be as big a savior as we all hope. We’ll surely win more games with him than without him, but I worry that even he is not good enough to cover up all of the glaring weaknesses in this team. Sure hope I’m wrong.

  4. Kahnzy

There’s no way we can lose tonight guys, right? Right?

Last season, I’d say hell yeah we win this! This season…my confidence is about as shattered as Shump.

  5. Kahnzy

I think I’d rather watch JR break his leg than shoot enough early clock contested step-back 20ft jumper.

  6. DRed

Bucks seem to understand we play no interior D without Tyson. Cluless Mike responds by chewing out Hardaway.

  7. BigBlueAL

I know its early but still this is pathetic. Instead of jumping on a young team missing a bunch of players and putting this game away early the Knicks are sleepwalking.

  8. Kahnzy

At least we have a decent rookie. Let’s all enjoy him before he’s traded away for a cameo appearance in the playoffs.

  9. Kahnzy

Well, all those people thinking Murray will be the second coming of Linsanity, here we go! Truly, I hope you’re right.

  10. yellowboy90

Do PGs have a secret cheat code against the knicks that they share with each other? ” Yeah man, all you have to do is go left right up down… and you will be on fire all night”

  11. cgreene

I understand that the Knicks play soft D and allow guards to get into rhythm. But on the other hand if you said that Brandon Knight and Beale were going to shoot 27 footers off the dribble all night I’d probably be ok with that. And yet these guys drop bombs all over this team.

  12. Brian Cronin Post author

I don’t think anyone told Murry that you’re only allowed six fouls per game, not per quarter.

  13. Kahnzy

I make sarcastic remarks about Murry, but I really would like to see him succeed. He may not be a 2nd coming of Linsanity, but I’d be happy to see him have the kind of success Copeland had.

Metta’s just mugging people out there. Love it.

  14. Alecto

Woodson wearing all black tonight because this is the death of his tenure with the Knicks, if the universe is a just one (so of course he’ll keep his job).

  15. EB

Do PGs have a secret cheat code against the knicks that they share with each other? ” Yeah man, all you have to do is go left right up down… and you will be on fire all night”

It’s called the pick and roll. Totally unfair.

  16. ephus

I’m impressed with the Greek Freak. He is not a rotation player on a good team, yet. In two years, he could be something special – particularly if he ends up at 7′.

  17. AvonBarksdale

Hey Jr did something smart! I like that, MWP inspired steal in the backcourt and what the fuck a timeout right away..what do u kno

  18. maxwell_3g

as a fantasy basketball player, I feel the best play is to go with the pg that is facing the knicks on a nightly basis, nearly guaranteed career game

  19. Brian Cronin Post author

Well, at least they didn’t actually blow the whole lead before the half! That’s something!

  20. Brian Cronin Post author

Jesus Bargs. Don’t turn your back on the guy driving down the lane

That was another one for the .gif files.

  21. EB

Who do you think plays better interior help D? Bargnani, or a 50 year old Oak?

Considering all it takes is to play better than Bargs is to recognize there are 4 other players on the court, I think we could put a fish in a fish bowl out on the court and it would do equally well as a help defender.

  22. AvonBarksdale

Our garbage team cost waaaay more than whatever players the bucks have out there tonight, I wish I knew the exact math since Sanders,Mayo,Etc are not playing it has to be some kind of record…if we has stat playing the math on this would be even more hilarious. nba record for players on the court maybe…our defense and offense is so bad we have the least turnovers and extra possessions on steals and opposing teams could have mediocre shooting and still beat us by 10 points without having to work to hard all night it’s unreal

  23. elikint

Raise your hand if you hope your beloved Knicks lose so Woodson will be one step closer to gone.

Put your hand down if you fear that there’s no way JVG takes this job (why on earth would he) and so the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know, one foolish enough to want to work for Dolan with this bad team. :(

  24. Kahnzy

Put your hand down if you fear that there’s no way JVG takes this job (why on earth would he) and so the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know, one foolish enough to want to work for Dolan with this bad team. :(

Put me in this camp. I agree, Woodson has been laughably bad and I never like seeing incompetence rewarded. But…I just don’t see either of the Gundy brothers coming here (JVG is like my favorite all-time coach and I’d love to see him back), and I don’t have much faith in Allan Houston as a first time coach in this situation.

  25. BigBlueAL

The Knicks seriously have to come out in the 3rd quarter and blow this team out. This shorthanded Bucks team (hell even a full strength Bucks team) has no business being in a close game in the 4th quarter vs what should be a desperate Knicks team.

  26. BigBlueAL

So much for the Knicks coming out to start the 3rd quarter and blowing out the Bucks. The Knicks have no clue what to do vs this Bucks zone.

  27. Kahnzy

So much for the Knicks coming out to start the 3rd quarter and blowing out the Bucks. The Knicks have no clue what to do vs this Bucks zone.

You know what they say about the East being big, man.

  28. ephus

How to break down a zone.

    1. Swing the ball.
    2. Get the ball to the foul line.
    3. Hit the offensive boards.

  29. DRed

Do it coach. Now is the time. The moment is right. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. UNLEASH THE HALF PIPE!!!!

  30. Robtachi

Fun fact: despite shooting like shit, AGAIN, JR Smith has played the most minutes of anyone besides Melo.

    I really hate Woodson.

  31. cgreene

I think this is a great indication of where this team is right now actually. We are a bottom 5 team in the NBA. Bottom line.

  32. nicos

It’s amazing how poor the Knicks guard defense is just shockingly bad- they can’t stay in front of anyone.

  33. maxwell_3g

this game should wake up anyone who wants to trade for lowry…towards what end?? we suck. teams that suck should not be trading away future draft picks

  34. Robtachi

Don’t think the anti-Knicks/pro-Heat/Lebron bias exists? Shump got called for that bullshit elbow graze on the 3-pointer at the end of regulation, and now Lebron wraps his hands around Paul George’s waist while he tries to hit a 3 at the end of regulation, no call, of course.

  35. maxwell_3g

im watching on league pass. everything about the bucks is second rate….their team…their announcers…their court.. even the camera work. the tv view looks like its from the parking lot

  36. Robtachi

You defend so much of what Anthony does, and then he dribbles the ball for 16 seconds and takes a contested 27-footer.

  37. AvonBarksdale

I never get tired of watching melo shoot a contested 3 to end the quarter, never. I know he just hit one so obviously it’s our best go to play

  38. Jake S.

    This game is an abomination.

Unrelated: I like him, and I think what the Knicks have done to him is a small travesty, but isn’t it at least possible that Shumpert kind of sucks? He has been AWFUL all year, and he’s only really shown flashes over his first two years in the league.

  39. ephus

    Here is another Knick imponderable:

Does Shumpert run into so many picks because he has been coached to switch or does Woodson run a switching defense because his perimeter defenders invariably run into picks?

  40. BigBlueAL

Celtics, Raptors and Nets all lose at home tonight. Knicks struggling vs this horrible Bucks team. Amazing how bad the Atlantic Division is.

  41. DRed

Shumpert is a very ordinary guard. A mediocre rotation player. Nothing more than that.

Pretty sure that makes him our best healthy guard

  42. cgreene

Why would Woodson have TH2 in when JR is such a worse player? I mean it makes sense to use your worse player here right? What am I missing?

  43. Robtachi

Nothing Shumpert does is aggressive. He’s so obviously afraid to make a mistake or gamble and have it not pay off.

  44. maxwell_3g

    This game is an abomination.

Unrelated: I like him, and I think what the Knicks have done to him is a small travesty, but isn’t it at least possible that Shumpert kind of sucks? He has been AWFUL all year, and he’s only really shown flashes over his first two years in the league.

as a huge shump supporter, im starting to come to that same conclusion. his pull up j has not improves, his handles kind of are awful, and I starting to fear that he is cursed with small hands. could someone close to the team look into this? he never seems to be able to control the ball when attacking the rim in traffic. I have to assume that it is due to small hands. that is how he is able to have vicious putback dunks once in a while, but that’s it. just my theory

  45. Donnie Walsh

If this is a 1 possession game the final 48 seconds will be must see TV. (They should preempt The Voice finale with a live feed!)

  46. AvonBarksdale

No thj no bueno, this close game will give Woodson a chance to use those leftover timeouts from last game! Maybe. I guess if we are lucky we will lose by one point but melo will get his shot!

  47. maxwell_3g

an underrated weakness of our pathetic team is our fouling. we foul people for no reason. why would you ever foul Henson???

  48. maxwell_3g

an underrated weakness of our pathetic team is our fouling. we foul people for no reason. why would you ever foul Henson???

and we do the same thing again….awesome

  49. Robtachi

So they actually made a good decision putting Shump on Knight to stop him from lighting it up, and of course they sub him out for Bargs and Knight immediately drills a wide-open three. JR Smith at approximately 53 minutes on 4-for-92 shooting.

  50. AvonBarksdale

Those two threes is all Dolan needs to extend Woodson and sign bargs older sister ASAP, we going sizzler.

  51. coyle022

For the love of god why is JR taking crucial end of game shots? and then barely hitting rim…it’s a joke

  52. Robtachi

This game is such a worst-case scenario. Knicks can lose at the last second and it’ll just be written off as a tough loss, or they can get a totally hollow win that will seem bigger than it is.

HOLY SHIT MIKE WOODSON USED A TIMEOUT GUYS!

  53. maxwell_3g

this negativity in KB land is great tonight. I feel that we are finally to the point that we all agree our team sucks…..except maybe ruru

  54. ephus

Chandler got blasted on a a screen by Ilyasova. Not sure if that was legal, but it did lead to a 5-4 for the last 8 seconds. Lucky to get into OT.

  55. Alecto

Why couldn’t we just lose in regulation time? Watching these two teams play for any amount of time is cruel and unusual.

  56. maxwell_3g

OT!!!!! who wouldn’t want to see 5 more minutes of this matchup!!!

in other news….forget about woodson…if tonight hasn’t convinced dolan that its time to blow this clusterfuk up, nothing will

  57. maxwell_3g

maybe we are looking at this all wrong.. maybe this proves what a f’n hoops genius woodson was to win 50+ with this team last year

  58. BigBlueAL

Give Melo credit, he is passing out of the double teams. Then again he might be doing so assuming whoever he is passing to will miss which would lead to a loss and possible firing of Woodson lol.

  59. DRed

I wish Jon Abby were here to tell me how scoring 12 on 15 shots is better than 9 on 4.

Also, great dishing by Melo for that swishing

  60. Frank O.

Man, either Melo is exhausted or he has lost a lot of explosiveness around the net. He’s not as strong a finisher this year.
And it may be his legs are dead from all these minutes…

  61. Kahnzy

Look on the bright side those of you who attend these games in person. This could be happening at home after you spent $a lot to view this titanic matchup of the East.

  62. Kahnzy

maybe we are looking at this all wrong.. maybe this proves what a f’n hoops genius woodson was to win 50+ with this team last year

This gave me a good belly laugh. Thanks

  63. ephus

Of course, getting the ball to Melo with 13 seconds on the clock and letting him dribble until he has 3 seconds left also is not running the offense.

  64. maxwell_3g

remember when people used to say that melo was the best last game shot maker in the league?? yeah, that was a strange notion

  65. ephus

Please go 2 for 1 off of this time out. Get the shot up quickly (by 28 seconds left). Only good things can happen.

  66. Frank O.

Woody called time with 33 seconds.
    Progress!

But will he call another ISO play for no. 7?
    Defy history, Woody!

  67. maxwell_3g

lolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!! this team is getting more entertaining every night

  68. MarvsTeeth

    Ahahaha. These Knicks are amazing.

Great play call for iso-Melo. Fantastic shot by Bargnani instead of getting fouled.

Also – does anyone else feel like Woodson is just calling timeouts in rational situations just because he feels like he should after the previous game’s debacle, even though he probably has nothing to tell the team?

  69. MarvsTeeth

This is the one team in the NBA that is more hapless than the Knicks. Somehow, the Knicks still can’t shake them.

  70. ephus

When I coached, rule #1 was that you needed your players to know what they were going to do if the ball came to them before it happened. Bargnani was poorly coached there.

And Melo showing horrible defensive rebounding form. Elbows out. Hands up. Stick your butt into someone.

  71. Robtachi

Everyone who’s ever been involved in the NBA knows Woodson’s final play call is “get the ball to Melo at all costs” instead of “get anybody an open look at all costs.”

    Idiot.

  72. ephus

Chandler did an outstanding job on Knight as time ran down in the first OT. Knight took a 10 foot scoop shot. If Melo rebounds, the game is over.

Of course, if Bargnani just holds the ball, the game is over.

  73. coyle022

Jesus Christmas this team is an abomination. Spero- “Clyde do you sit him down?” (talking about Bargs) Why would you sit him down? the East is Big Man. Especially this Henson-Ilyasova-Middleton frontcourt. Way too big

  74. maxwell_3g

lord, can we just trade chandler for future assets before he gets injured again? hes a ticking time bomb

  75. AvonBarksdale

I don’t even want to watch this shit anymore in my mind we hit a wide open Steve Novak for a .03 second game winner in regulation from behind the arc, he did the belt and everything. Back to reality we lose Tyson for the season after logging 65 minutes first game back

  76. BigBlueAL

This has been the best game thread ever. Literally laughed my ass off reading some of the comments the past half hour or so. Making this game alot more tolerable to watch lol.

  77. maxwell_3g

the greek freak’s floor is a rich man’s Stacey augmon and his ceiling is a taller paul george…. I think hes gonna be really good

  78. Frank O.

Man, someone get Clyde a uniform. He’s like 70, but he’d increase the team’s collective IQ easily bey 50 percent…

  79. EB

Man, someone get Clyde a uniform. He’s like 70, but he’d increase the team’s collective IQ easily bey 50 percent…

zero divided by anything is incalculable

  80. MarvsTeeth

Ok now Woodson is just calling timeouts at every single legal opportunity. We get it Mike, you won’t get fooled twice.

  81. maxwell_3g

This has been the best game thread ever. Literally laughed my ass off reading some of the comments the past half hour or so. Making this game alot more tolerable to watch lol.

there is definitely an inverse relationship between our team’s success and the quality of the game threads

  82. coyle022

Woodson just recklessly burning TO’s. What happens if the Bucks take a 1 pt lead with <10 seconds left? Maybe he's purposely burning them so that if Monday's situation comes up he can't call a TO bc there's none left.

  83. MarvsTeeth

I can’t believe we are going to win this game. The 2013-14 Knicks – losing the games you want them to win, winning the games you want them to lose.

  84. EB

They’ve played the worst team in the league to a stalemate.

Only because of injuries. Their injuries, were much worse.

  85. Kahnzy

Ok now Woodson is just calling timeouts at every single legal opportunity. We get it Mike, you won’t get fooled twice.

At this point, the only thing I’m waiting for is for him to make the, at this point seemingly inevitable, mistake of calling a TO when they don’t have any left and losing the game on a technical FT.

  86. ephus

I said it upthread and I mean it. The Knicks need more MWP. He does things on the defensive end that help – like rebound.

  87. coyle022

Yeah he’s definitely just burning the TO’s so that there’s no Timeout controversy at the end. 1:06 left, no timeouts left. What happens if Bucks take the lead with minimal time remaining? “The East is Big man.”

  88. cgreene

Did Woodson just use his last timeout for offense defense w a minute to go up 3? Love to see that come back to haunt him. Terrible coaching

  89. Robtachi

Chandler is obviously cramping in his calves so it’s not something awful. Just depends on him and how much pain he wants to play through.

  90. Frank O.

Woody is calling timeouts because apparently the team requires direction.
    Dribble. Don’t carry.
Pass…to your team…the guys in blue.
With less than 24 second in the game and a new possession, hold the ball til fouled…
    You know

  91. Donnie Walsh

They’ve played the worst team in the league to a stalemate.

Only because of injuries. Their injuries, were much worse.

I was talking about the Bucks!

  92. ephus

Please defend the 3 point line. Give up a dunk, but do not give up the three. And by all that is holy, NO FOULS.

Once the Knicks get the ball, get it across the timeline and then do nothing. Do not dribble. Do not shoot. Allow yourself to get fouled.

  93. Robtachi

They should give Melo and Chandler both the next game off. They both need it, and they’re gonna get blown out anyway.

  94. Brian Cronin Post author

Brian, Knick fans have no right to make fun of another team for being dumb lol.

Oh true, the Knicks are very dumb (that Bargs play was one of the dumbest plays I’ve ever seen), but that doesn’t make the Bucks any less dumb.

  95. ephus

‘Melo just punished Greek Freak for trying to foul him.

    Welcome to the NBA, kid.

    It’s a two possession game.

  96. MarvsTeeth

There is something so pathetic about all of this…the beyond-awful coaching, the stale offense, the hapless defense, the lost season, the lack of a pick in 2014, us all hoping for Woodson to get the boot, the realization that he will not get the boot and that there really is NO hope at all anywhere in the near future, that Dolan owns the team, that we may be entering the Isaiah 2.0 years…

All of it is so pathetic and defeating that I can’t really do anything except kind of pull for them to win, kind of how you pull for a human vegetable to live another day even though there isn’t much point and everyone in the room knows it.

  97. Frank O.

That actually looked like a foul on Melo.
He threw and elbow into the beanpole.
    Stupid.
    Lucky it didn’t get called.

  98. ephus

    Victory is mine.
    Victory is mine.
    Victory today is mine.

    I told Satan,
    “Get Thee Behind”
    Victory today is mine.

Step away from the ledge man, it’s just not worth it.

As usual I didn’t get to see the game, but by the look of the above comments, it doesn’t look like it reached the dizzying heights of a double overtime game.

  100. BigBlueAL

The game on Saturday is at noon?? Shit, I usually sleep in until like 2pm on Saturdays. Maybe I still should this Saturday lol.

  101. lavor postell

That was one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen from the Knicks including the beatdowns they took from San Antonio and Boston this season at the Garden. The main hope was that Shump would take a step and become a consistent 12-15 a night scorer, shoot above 37% from three and be able to be a secondary ball handler. A player like that would make a massive difference on this team. Now he’s actively passing up wide open threes to swing it around the perimeter, or even worse he’ll try and take somebody off the dribble and get stuffed by Hall of Fame defender, Frontofrim.

  102. Kahnzy

    You know JR will!

  103. Brian Cronin Post author

All the other Atlantic teams lost so the Knicks gained ground on everyone. They are so winning this division. It is kind of hilarious, really.

  104. maxwell_3g

Saturday at noon. JR should be in fin form then. maybe we will get to wear our nuclear plasma orange unis

  105. Kahnzy

All the other Atlantic teams lost so the Knicks gained a ground on everyone. They are so winning this division. It is kind of hilarious, really.

The East is so bad, or is that big, that seeds 4-8 could all easily have a losing record.

  106. DRed

Are you not entertained? Terrible game quality-wise, but strangely fun to watch. Like that youtube video of trucks hitting that low bridge again and again

  107. JK47

Putting JR Smith on the floor for 48 minutes and still somehow winning an NBA game is kind of an incredible accomplishment.

  108. johnno

On another note, how in the world do the refs not call a foul on LeBron on George’s last shot? He literally grabbed his waist from behind and moved him. Unbelievable…

  109. lavor postell

We all know JR’s epitaph could never be complete without “laying the pipe” being inscribed somewhere.
