2013-14 Game Thread: Knicks vs. 76ers

The Knicks have lost four games in a row but now they enter a stretch of extremely winnable games at home. They really need to win this one tonight.

Let’s go Knicks!

i appreciate the passions, but why do we need to win this game again. Im hoping that the nug’s get the first pick with our pick. maybe that will shame us into not making stupid trades in the future. its all about the big picture

  2. lavor postell

So many stupid rotations already. Felton barely making an effort to fight over screens gets switched on to Thaddeus Young, gets beat backdoor and then commits one of his patented stupid and-1 fouls. Shumpert doubling down on MCW going nowhere leaving Turner wide open from 3. Really amazing stuff.

  3. yellowboy90

When Tyson and Bargs are in the post now you know you in trouble aint nothing the but a loss possession.

Dolan will never learn, so it really doesn’t do any good to root against the Knicks. If it did, then I’d be with you, but it doesn’t, so we might as well continue to root for them to make the playoffs and make a little noise before either Indy or Miami eliminates them.

Like the way the Stephon Marbury trade taught us not to trade unprotected picks? And the way the Eddy Curry trade taught us not to trade unprotected picks?

  6. DRed

Evan Turner and some guy named James Anderson are fucking clowning us. Seriously, who is James Anderson? This is the second worst offense in the NBA we’re going up against, by the way.

  7. lavor postell

This team has given up. Some of this isn’t even Woodson’s terrible defensive strategy as much as its guys just not giving a shit.

  8. Kahnzy

As much fun as it is to blame Woodson for what ails us (and God knows he deserves most of it), plays like that are just effort. How the “lumbering center” beats the entire Knick team down the floor for a wide open dunk is beyond me. Anyway, we suck from top to bottom.

  9. Brian Cronin Post author

    Basically.

Although to be fair, I don’t think it is always a bad idea to trade unprotected first round picks. To wit, I think trading one for Melo was fair enough. I was even on board with trading one for T-Mac (my issue with the T-Mac deal was the fact that the Rockets knew that they could get the Knicks to trade one because the Knicks are so well known for being stupid). The problem is trading first rounders for non-top level talent, like trading one for Bargs or trading one for Lowry. Or trading first rounders when your team is currently bad.

  10. coyle022

Knicks giving up a 30 point quarter to the tanking Sixers. Let it flow Philly, let it flow. Should be Woodson’s last game if they get blown out by MCW and co.

  11. maxwell_3g

i hear you guys, but the combo of melo leaving and the nug’s cashing in a top 3 (we will say) pcik would be a double whammy that I think would even force the FO to look in the mirror. of course, we are the most valuable NBA franchise, so maybe not.

but hey, there is like 250 of us on this site. a cool $4 million each, and we can probably take over. who’s coming with me!!!!!????

  12. DRed

Lowry? Lowry is a terrific NBA player. Lowry is definitely worth a first round pick if you know you can resign him for a reasonable salary. Don’t even mention him in the same sentence with a stiff like Bargnani.

  13. maxwell_3g

T-Mac was far from top flight talent by the time we traded for him. that deal was all about getting Jeffries off the books (the first time) in preparation of making a run at Lebron. Of course, we had the opportunity (per some media) to package Jeffries with a then balling Nate to the Kings the year before and turned it down.

  14. DRed

I’d complain about Bargs having only one rebound, but it’s hard to get rebounds when the other team never misses.

  15. maxwell_3g

D-Red, Lowry is having a career year. he was very average last year. it is not a good practice to trade for players at the very peak of their value. he is not worth a first rounder at this point, especially going into FA. of course, neither is Bargs (obviously)

  16. DRed

Lowry is definitely worth a first round pick if you can resign him. I hear you about it being a bad idea to trade for players at their peak, but if you get 4 years of above average (and he was above average last year) production out of Lowry at a reasonable cost, that’s better than anything you can expect to get for a non-lottery pick.

Oh yeah, I was just using T-Mac’s name as the shorthand for that deal. I guess I could have called it “T-Mac’s contract.” ;) I don’t think that Kings deal was ever legit.

  18. maxwell_3g

dred, you have to factor in opportunity cost. lowry will fill up a high salary slot. draft picks give you a shot at acquiring cheap production for 4 years. this frees up salary for other productive players. we rarely have cheap young talent, so we are always stuck with cheap over the hill hurt talent

  19. Brian Cronin Post author

The Lowry we’ve seen since the trade rumors probably is worth a first rounder. But when you’re 11 games under .500, you shouldn’t be dealing unprotected first rounders period (unless, of course, some theoretical “Lebron James for a first rounder” exception to prove the rule scenario).

  20. Nick C.

Guys guys Bargnani just sliced through the lane to cut the lead to 8. Novak can’t do that! (insert sarcasm emoticon).

  21. JK47

If Michael Carter-Williams had stayed at Syracuse, he’d have been the second best point guard on the team this year.

  22. Nick C.

Brian, back when he broke into the NFL I recall reading that Ottis Anderson’s first name was a spelling glitch.

  23. maxwell_3g

in all sincerity, you guys must be better fans than me. i watch every game. i got into fights in middle school defending the good name of John Starks. still, i cant root for this team. its like car crash in a movie. i cant help but root for the biggest explosion, the bloodiest massacre possible. i want guts spilled on the floor, not 39-43. i want a home loss to the sixers for starters. sorry. please dont judge me

  24. er

Being out rebounded 26-11. Nice effort.

Some of it is effort and some of it is just the ball right to them on offensive misses honestly

  25. er

    2 questions:

    1) Why do I keep watching this unwatchable team?

    2) Are we the worst team in the NBA?

    1) we are sick sick ppl
    2) yes

  26. Nick C.

Maxwell I was like that during the Isaiah years. Now I’m numb after brief flurries during Amare’s first year before the trade, Linsanity and last season.

  27. lavor postell

Yeah we should aggressively fight over screens against MCW who is an awful perimeter shooter and lives to penetrate.

  28. DRed

Some people might call me a cock-eyed optimist, but I think there’s a good chance we win this one.

We just have to somehow figure a way to contain James Anderson.

  29. yellowboy90

@ 47 not saying that at all it wasn’t a hard screen it was Shump was playing it well. Its not just that play either for someone who says he sees switching as a last resort. jmo.

  30. Will the Thrill

I think it’s hilarious that Woodson asserted that we switched 38 times against the Nets and they only scored on 8 of those possessions. I see the Knicks switch about 3 times per possession if not more lol. They just switch to not have to chase their man.

  31. max fisher-cohen

Didn’t Dolan back out of the Lowry trade because he was worried Ujiri had shysted him in the Anthony deal? The guy is stubborn and arrogant, but if he won’t every change his approach, then there’s no point in rooting for the team at all.

  32. maxwell_3g

    2) Are we the worst team in the NBA?

    lol

  33. JK47

The Sixers are racking up a .619 eFG% so far and have 10 offensive rebounds.

This Knicks defense is really something else.

  34. er

I like Melo as much as the next guy but he is absent minded a few too many times. It sucks because if he was more cerebral he would easily be top 5 with no argument

  35. maxwell_3g

    know what’s sad.

I am married to a beautiful woman, financially secure, a lawyer, have a decent social life, have my health, and hate this team…..but whats on my mind??? Only 2 more days until FRIDAY NIGHT KNICKS!!!!!!

  36. the_stoveeffect

At least Kyle Lowry is 0/8 with 0 points in 23 minutes so far. Trying to be optimistic here…

  37. johnno

Did anyone else notice that, on that dumb Melo foul at the end of the half, Woodson said, “What the f&@$ is he doing?”

  38. DRed

but whats on my mind??? Only 2 more days until FRIDAY NIGHT KNICKS!!!!!!

Hey, that song is really fucking catchy. Don’t beat yourself up.

  39. maxwell_3g

do the trautwig halftime interviews with the asst coaches remind anyone else of the old jerry springer backstage interviews of the woman who just learned her man was cheating on her with a stripper??? he asks the questions in such a solemn and measured way

  40. lavor postell

    @51
My comment wasn’t related to yours. I actually wasn’t sure why we would not just go under MCW screens and make him shoot it

  41. Kikuchiyo

Is there ever a time when all five Knicks are playing hard? Every once in a while, I see one, two, even three Knicks give a crap. But there’s always at least one who is daydreaming.

  42. Nick C.

Is it me or does it seem like most possessions @16 seconds Philly is taking it to the basket or is on their third pass whereas the Knicks are on their first or dribbling in place?

  43. lavor postell

All the pick and pops we run for Bargnani would be way more effective if we ran them for this Carmelo Anthony guy

  44. maxwell_3g

while the collision was pretty awesome, i will always be left wondering what bargs was actually going to do if not fouled

  45. Donnie Walsh

What I don’t understand is that Darko Milicic was the #2 pick in the greatest draft ever, but he was never just handed 30 mins a game… Why does Bargnani’s draft status trump his skills in the eyes of numerous NBA coaches and execs??

  46. Kikuchiyo

while the collision was pretty awesome, i will always be left wondering what bargs was actually going to do if not fouled

    that sir, is spot on

  48. coyle022

Why does Woodson continue to run out Bargnani? Like is Cole Aldrich really that bad? How bad could he truly be? Is he better/worse than say, Matt Bonner? Alexis Ajinca?

I know one thing-he simply cannot be any worse than Bargnani.

  49. knickster

I have a feeling that a loss to Philly tonite would spell the end for Woody. Which means the knicks will win by 6…lol

  50. BigBlueAL

Honestly maxwell, I wouldnt be surprised at all if the Knicks, including tonight, win their next 5 games in a row heading into the home game vs Miami.

  51. maxwell_3g

what is up with barg’s facial hair. has it always been like that?? the squared beard with no sideburns?

  52. Kahnzy

    Let’s do this the Hardaway.

Simultaneously the best pun of the night and the worst.

    Congrats to you sir.

  53. maxwell_3g

al, if the knicks do when a few, how crazy with ruru’s optimism be???? i dont think i could take it

  54. er

Hardaway is the only person on this team that makes me want to root for the Knicks

I respectfully disagree but he will be a great knick if he continues to play with this kinda heart I love it

  55. BigBlueAL

LOL hey they just won 5 in a row and that was vs a much tougher schedule than what they have coming up. They probably will blow 1 of the games but at worst they still should win 4 of next 5.

  56. vpac

Melo has been awful since he has come back in…. The offense just stops … It’s like the other players are afraid to pass the ball to anyone but him

  57. KJG

I’m not saying this is completely correlated but as soon as Melo checked in, our offense was ball stopped personally by him two times, and on at least two , maybe one, other occassion the play developing was for him and was so slow in it’s development that it outright sucked. He had two crucial turnovers, lousy jump shots falling away with Thad young in his grill and a technical. Pathetic. !

  58. maxwell_3g

donnie. know what gamecast doesn’t have???? video of Bargs taking off from just inside the free throw line and trying to jump over someone to unleash a vicious dunk…..yes, it ended with two bodies on the ground under the hoop

  59. Thomas B.

I am so sick of hearing the phrase “He sets a new career high tonight against the Knicks”game after game after freaking game.

  60. Kahnzy

I am so sick of hearing the phrase “He sets a new career high tonight against the Knicks”game after game after freaking game.

I’m pretty sure young players in need of a breakout game circle the Knicks on their calendars.

  61. lavor postell

I wish I even remembered why JR Smith has a reputation as “knock down shooter”. He can’t even knock down free throws with any fucking consistency anymore.

  62. Kahnzy

JR and Shump are shooting guards who cant make FT’s.

    But they’re great 3-point shoo…nevermind.

    But they’re great defen….nope.

    They have awesome hair….not anymore.

They’re on great contracts! Well…half of them are.

Yeah, our guards are sucktastic. As bad as Bargs is and as disinterested as Chandler has been, our guard play is our biggest problem.

  63. maxwell_3g

we should all note that we are a) at home, b) playing a shitty team, who c) is trying to lose.

can we all agree that is is time to blow this mf’er up????

  64. coyle022

    Let’s hear it folks, loud and clear: FI-RE WOOD-SON! FI-RE WOOD-SON! FI-RE WOOD-SON! FI-RE WOOD-SON! FI-RE WOOD-SON! FI-RE WOOD-SON! FI-RE WOOD-SON! FI-RE WOOD-SON! FI-RE WOOD-SON! FI-RE WOOD-SON!

  65. lavor postell

If there was ever an example of why Woodson is a fucking idiot and needs to be fired immediately this is it. We should blow it up either way but Woodson needs to be the first one out the door. That was a fucking embarassment.

  66. BigBlueAL

This is the closest Ive ever been to truly saying Im done being a Knicks fan. Utterly embarrassing loss tonight.

  67. Kahnzy

Boooooooooooooooooooo…… This could be rock bottom … Just blow it up …. PLEASE?!?!

Oh no it isn’t. We’re playing Charlotte Friday. At home. Without their only middling offensive player in Kemba Walker. This could get even worse before it gets better.

  68. coyle022

I think we can all agree-it’s not just the fact that they’re losing games, but its HOW they are losing the games. Endless switching leading to mismatches, Bargnani playing major minutes, Iso-Melo in 4th Qtr. leading to stagnant offense, etc. Fans can accept losing if the team is playing hard, but this is an unmitigated disaster, which should result in Woodson losing his job.

  69. yellowboy90

Woody- “I don’t think switching hurt us. once again if you look at the numbers when we switch….”

Melo really killed the momentum this game though. Wow.

  70. Thomas B.

Clearly no Knick deserves to be listed as a star of the game. They should have just used a picture of a fan from the 400 level since anyone up there was closer on defense to the Sixers than any Knick was tonight.

  71. JK47

You know, if you just start rooting for the Knicks to lose, it’s a lot more fun. It’s much more rewarding. They deliver the goods time after time.

  72. AvonBarksdale

Beno and Cole look pretty happy with the score and I can’t blame them, I hate Woodson also…if Walt can’t even guess as to what melo and shump are doing out there, that’s bad! I’ve stopped watching almost entirely, got the wii u instead now…this shit got
    Too pathetic

  74. KJG

Woodson blow, but these professional ballers blow just as much if not more…. These guys stink. The worst part of this is they think this is an anomaly. They are all great, especially melo and JR… Melo hit those awesome threes to make it a 4 point loss…yes!

  75. Frank O.

They miss FTs down the stretch, inexplicably lose shooters, forget to hold rebounds high, and generally suck.
It’s remarkable the way they find stupid ways to blow games.

  76. Hubert

This has to be it, right? An 0-3 start to the homestand, every loss humiliating, the players practically begging for the coach to be canned, everything the coach says is retarded…how can he stick around?

I’m not even paying attention any more. I’m just apathetic. This is what Woodson’s done to me.

  77. maxwell_3g

i am all for firing Woodson, but I hope that no one thinks that chopping him would solve this team’s problems. it might be a start, but this squad needs to burn to the ground

  78. er

Woody defensive schemes are awful. Just play zone dumb ass if you want to switch

Also on offense can u run 10 pick and pop 3s for Melo a game. Dude was like 5-6 on catch and shoot threes. This team needs a coach. It’s obvious Kidd and Wallace were the co head coaches last yr

  79. coyle022

Fire Woodson ASAP. A competent coach can recover. No Bargnani, minimal Felton, only play JR if he is good JR, put Shump on opposing PG, less min. for Melo. Melo at the 1/2 or 5 more often. Backup minutes for both Tyler and Aldrich. Hardaway Jr. should play more. Only play Bargs alongside KMart. Full Squad healthy, starting lineup should be Felton/Prigs, Shump, Melo, Amare/Kmart, Chandler. Not opposed to bringing Chandler off bench for spark. Manage minutes better. Stop playing Melo 40+ min. These are all just adjustments off the top of my head, I’m sure as a KB community we could have a full thread’s worth of problems/issues/obvious adjustments that are directly attributed to Woodson and his god-awful coaching.

Not to mention strategic philosophies (switching, iso-ball) those ideas above are all just personnel decisions.

  80. max fisher-cohen

Sixers made two really smart moves tonight, both pertaining to NY’s absolute inability to score on the break. They pressured the ball, knowing New York would let them recover defensively even if they broke the press because NY’s only offense is through Anthony, and they crashed the boards, recognizing that NY wouldn’t pursue fast breaks even if the Sixers weren’t back quickly. The hot three point shooting helped, but then it helped New York too.

  81. er

i am all for firing Woodson, but I hope that no one thinks that chopping him would solve this team’s problems. it might be a start, but this squad needs to burn to the ground

There’s no pick this year. So you play the year out and trade chandlers contract next year

  82. kronicfatigue

Question: How did you get open for that three that put you guys up by 5?

Answer: Well, we knew that if we ran some back screens, they’d just switch, so…

  83. maxwell_3g

what about melo er? i think you need to trun him into assets now. start sending out feelers so its not rushed at the deadline

  84. er

what about melo er? i think you need to trun him into assets now. start sending out feelers so its not rushed at the deadline

I agree with you. But i doubt that it’s gonna happen. I think it would be best for all parties. Melo would be a great addition to a team with actual nba players on it. Knicks need assets

OT mike Breen just orgasm’d on a KD three.

  85. Kahnzy

I love JVG. I dunno if I’d want him to take over this shitheap. I’d miss him calling games only to watch even him likely fail to coach this horribly assembled team.

  86. BigBlueAL

Id do anything to have JVG coach this team next season. Ditto Thibs. But God knows who the hell will be coaching this team next season.

  87. DRed

The Knicks are much more enjoyable when you think of them as a comedy troupe and not as a professional basketball team. Losing in increasingly boneheaded ways is a big part of what we do.

  88. BigBlueAL

Ive read plenty of stuff saying he is leaving the Bulls for sure after this season. Problem is he is under contract so I assume the Bulls would have to be given compensation. Plus I dunno how is his relationship with Dolan after leaving here.

There’s a twist to Groucho Marx’s “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.” Any coach (or player) who could start the process of righting the ship would have NOTHING to do with such a disaster of a ship to begin with.

  90. BigBlueAL

Listening to JVG over the summer I actually think he would because I think he feels he would owe it to the franchise to come back and help them get back on track. But honestly who knows. Unfortunately someone like Calipari would probably jump at the opportunity to coach this team especially if Melo stays.
