2013-14 Game Thread: Knicks @ Hawks

Starting the thread while it’s tied. So you can’t blame me if they blow the lead!

The Hawks have lost eight straight. They are playing without Al Horford and Paul Millsap. Jeff Teague is playing hurt. So, well, come on Knicks!

Kyle Korver is like the bus in Speed. He will blow up if you do not keep 50 mph defense on him AT ALL TIMES.

Somewhere out there a Hawks fan is thinking to himself….oh, I wish Mike Woodson was still our coach.

For everyone of those guys, there are probably a dozen screaming that their losing to the Knicks of all teams. Seriously, we’ve become that team that other teams circle on the calendar as a win and then get roasted if they should lose (and rightly so).

Unless you were talking about helping the Hawks tank…in which case, you’re probably right. If we had a draft pick this year, I’d love Woodson.

Without Horford or Millsap, the Hawks are as bad as the Bucks.

Of course, the Knicks have proven they can lose to the Bucks.

Lou Williams is just sad to watch. He was one of my favorite players before his injury.

I’d be so much more excited about the game ‘Melo was having if I had even an ounce of emotional investment left in this season.

    Hahahaha!
    Up by 17?
    That’s nothing for this team.
And has anyone been within five feet on each of Williams’ last three 3s?
    Might want to guard him.
This is a horribly coached team

  9. Thomas B.

Anyone who continues to defend this team and its front office is suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.

  10. Totes McGoats

I just can’t believe this…we get a double double from Felton and a monstrous double double from Chandler along with Melo’s usual 30 or so..and it still looks like we are gonna lose. What gives?

  11. Frank O.

I’m out, again. Can’t believe these fools didn’t blow this team up.
And then to read the Knicks got suckered into believing they had a deal for shump so that they didn’t deal with the Thunder was just fuel to the fire

  12. thenoblefacehumper

@46, that might be the most common comment on game threads this year. He’ll be the coach on Monday.

  13. Kahnzy

Woodson can’t possibly survive this can he???

You better believe he can. Anyone still believing Woodson’s gonna get canned after yet another embarrassing loss is as out of touch with reality as anyone still thinking we’re gonna make the playoffs. He’ll be here for the rest of the season, most likely. Look for a coaching change in the offseason.

If you had Mike Scott OR DeMarre Carroll for the Jimmer, you win.

    Hooray for me!

  14. ephus

Woodson is the lead character in Naked Lunch. He can survive anything.

But only because Dolan is another William Burroughs lead: Dolan is a Junkie.

  15. er

The turning point of this game were the two stupid fouls Melo picked up in the late 3rd quarter.

I think the 4th foul was the definition of tick tack

  16. er

Earlier, did Spiro say ATl outscored Ny 34-7 with Melo of the court? That couldn’t be right

I think it was 34 -13 when he said it. Which can be seen in the fact that melo was a +2 in a 9 point loss and chandler was a +6. So they finished -11 and 15 respectively without them. This i imagine was even larger before atl’s scorching 4th. Like i said earlier i just want melo to chuck it. Thats all im watchin these last 20 somthin games for lol

  17. BigBlueAL

I would honestly love to know what Dolan is thinking right now. Is he angry?? Sad?? Doesnt give a shit?? Is he talking to someone about how bad his team is?? Is he just thinking about his next concert?? Does he know or care that he is the biggest laughingstock of sports?? Does he realize and if he does care about how much he is hated by his own fan base??

  18. ephus

    Dolan is a junkie (dry).

He thinks that he has credibility because he is loyal to his loyalists.

He had completely and totally cut off all dissenting voices because his ego is too fragile to face the truth.

The only chance that the Dolans sell MSG is if James Dolan concludes it is too humiliating to continue.

I suggest a “Fire Dolan” chant at all home games.

  19. BigBlueAL

Thats the thing, I mean how can it get any more humiliating?? Missing the playoffs 9 out of 10 years wasnt enough?? Going 11 years between winning playoff games?? Going into a season where the team had for the first time in 13 years expectations of at least making it into the 2nd round and having arguably the most embarrassing season under his tenure??

Im thinking maybe the only way it really hits him that dramatic changes have to be made would be if Melo leaves. Thats it. Because dont tell me they would be happy he leaves so they can do an honest rebuild because we all know that would be straight bullshit. Their #1 priority is clearly keeping Melo. So again maybe him leaving could possibly be the moment that will finally slap Dolan into facing reality.

  20. ephus

    I am being literal.

The only thing that will get to Dolan is 19,000 people humiliating him by chanting “Fire Dolan” at every home game.

If Melo leaves, Dolan will find an ego-protecting scape goat.

If Dolan fears to enter MSG for a Knick game, he might sell the team (and the rest of the MSG holdings).

    Fire Dolan.

  21. hoolahoop

Every one of these ugly losses is another nail in the coffin for Melo leaving. I think the reason he’s playing so hard now is so he can leave NY without a guilty conscience and free of criticism for going to another team. And rightfully so. After making the horrendous Bargani deal, the FO watches and does nothing while the team is in free fall – for the entire fucking season!

Glad I didn’t watch this one. That’s two in a row for me.

  22. hoolahoop

FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON! FIRE WOODSON!

  23. thenoblefacehumper

Someone tel me again why we didn’t trade for Teague or Lowry?

Because it would’ve made this dumpster fire of a team only marginally better at the cost of what few assets we have left?

  24. hoolahoop

Actually, firing Woodson now is meaningless. Too little too late. The damage is done – the disrespect for the knicks fan base is mind boggling.
Why would anyone spend a penny to go to MSG and support this team? We vote with our dollars and if you give them to the knicks you’re endorsing what they’re doing. Do you think if the Garden was empty something wouldn’t change?
    Boycott MSG.

  25. max fisher-cohen

I agree with your psych-eval of Dolan, Ephus. I hope it happens. I loved Jon Abbey’s “Occupy MSG” thing, but as long as Melo is here, it’s not going to happen. If Melo leaves for nothing though… Well, the Knicks will be really bad next year, like I’d put the over under at like 13 wins. The Knicks are -12.3 points/100 possessions with Melo on the bench this season, which is right on par with where the bucks are at now, and if Melo leaves, the Knicks will have to trade Chandler… They could set a record for worst point differential ever.

If that happens, NYK ticket prices are going to drop to like 50 cents a pop, and when that happens, you get the riff raff in the games — the people who maybe don’t have the best manners and actually care about the team rather than entertaining some business client.

With Woodson almost inevitably gone this summer, who else can fans take out their anger on?

  26. mase

“Because it would’ve made this dumpster fire of a team only marginally better at the cost of what few assets we have left”

    What assets?

  27. stratomatic

Part of me is hoping that Melo goes somewhere else just so I can watch the new team get wildly disappointing results and everyone say Melo needs help. lmao

Some of the D’Antono Knicks when David Lee was the star, Mardy Collins was starting some games at PG, Quentin Richardson was a key piece, Al Harrington was our “go to guy” and they were in all out “dump long contracts mode” were as good at this team.

When are people going to start understanding that there’s way more to the game than scoring a lot of points?

You have to defend, MOVE the ball to get good shots, play INTELLIGENTLY, take the correct shots etc…

Melo is as talented a scorer as there is in the league (maybe a notch below Durant), but when you net it all out he’s just an above average player. He’s not even as good as peak Pierce. That’s why even when he’s combined with a guy like Chandler he can’t produce a very good team.

Sure, put some really good and really smart pieces around him and you’ll get a good team, but it won’t be him that’s driving the success. He’ll just get the credit for it because he scores the most points.

Huh? non-sequitur. You’ve watched him rebound this season right? His WP and WS stats have gone up correspondingly but he’s still the same player only just needed to rebound more given the team’s configuration. If Melo shifted some from ISOs to PnRs and PnPs as ball handler and screener, his dimes and efficiency would go up. Stats show he’s elite in both roles. Plus if had a guard like Lowry who could knock down 3s and get him open looks, again his dimes and efficiency would go up. I will say Melo’s problem is one or a combination of the following: self-awareness (he’s not bright enough to figure that out on his own), doesn’t care, or is just unwilling to change his shot distribution a bit away from ISOs at which he feels most comfortable.

He’s not even as good as peak Pierce. That’s why even when he’s combined with a guy like Chandler he can’t produce a very good team.

Chandler is the one who is grossly overrated. If the last 2 years haven’t demonstrated that to you, nothing will. He’s always been about a #8-15 center in the league who happened to be an excellent fit for Dirk. Not even Carlisle/Cuban thought he was worth 14m.
