Hey, did you know that in addition to banging the keys here and occasionally for the NY Times, Robert is a playwright, an actor and a wand'ring mendicant/gadfly? He also once wrestled a bear...and lost.

Fucking camera angles. Do they seriously think people want to see weird camera angles? They just want to see the game!!!

  16. 16
    Brian Cronin says:

This criticism of Lebron by Miller is absurd. “You shouldn’t ask people for help if you’re as good as Lebron.” What the fuck?

  17. 17
    d-mar says:

Clyde and Breen are being idiotic, talking about the lack of defensive intensity last game. That wasn’t even close to the problem, it was turnovers and fouls.

    Brian Cronin:
Fucking camera angles. Do they seriously think people want to see weird camera angles? They just want to see the game!!!

this has driven me crazy for years, the bigger the game, the more stupid, distracting angles they use.

Fields looked like he was Wade’s conjoined twin on that last Wade jumper and Wade still made it. That is not a good omen.

They have shot the ball very well so far. Points in paint under control in half-court.

Not sure what we are doing on offense, but our defense looks okay when the Heat aren’t in transition.

  27. 27
    d-mar says:

    Thanks. Didn’t know. Hi Clyde.

  30. 30
    ruruland says:

They have designed plays to get other guys going early, but so far **** seems to be the only who can get a shot off….

  31. 31
    Brian Cronin says:

Wow, I guess that does make sense to have Bibby out there if he can hit his open threes.

  32. 32
    Knicks4Eva says:

Bibby is definitely more solid in the playoffs, looking good.

  33. 33

That was a sick move by Lebron.

    Brian Cronin says:

    Melo up to 50%!

  35. 35
    Matt Park says:

I love J.R. but he can’t gamble, not even a little bit. It leads to too easy of a bucket for Lebron… Make the Heat work.

Hopefully he’s going to open the game up for them.

  39. 39
    Matt Park says:

That was a GREAT use of ‘Melo… The Heat are always going to trap the ball-handler. Use those high pick-and-rolls to get ‘Melo open looks. He’s good enough to pass right as he gets the rock.

  40. 40
    d-mar says:

LeBron drove, lost the ball, and the refs said “that can’t be, someone must have fouled him” and blew the whistle

  41. 41
    Brian Cronin says:

Why aren’t the Heat fronting Melo like they did in Game 1? Weird decision.

  42. 42
    Will the Thrill says:

This seems like game 2 of the playoffs last year…except now we have good players beside Melo.

  43. 43
    Brian Cronin says:

  44. 44
    2FOR18 says:

    Brian Cronin:
Why aren’t the Heat fronting Melo like they did in Game 1? Weird decision.

    Clyde just said why.

  45. 45
    gjknick says:

A bit of an improvement this game, eh? Love this Melo!

  46. 46
    Brian Cronin says:

    Clyde just said why.

But that reasoning doesn’t make sense. Fronting Melo helps them against the other Knicks, too.

  47. 47
    Gideon Zaga says:

Lol Doug, but it shall be so!

Doug: This makes me a terrible person but I want Lebron to know how a real shot to the back of the head feels.

  49. 49

because he’s not doing much posting,he’s getting the ball off movement.

because he’s not doing much posting,he’s getting the ball off movement.

That makes more sense than Clyde’s reasoning.

  51. 51
    Will the Thrill says:

Weird how much Woodson likes playing Melo and Amare together… even if hasn’t realized they can’t both play well together it would seem like he would realize he needs one of them on the floor to have a legitimate threat on offense.

  52. 52
    Brian Cronin says:

Ouch, that was a great look for JR. I love that the Knicks got the rebound, though.

  60. 60
    dogrufus says:

Sick play by Chandler and the fucking refs step in to ensure any Knicks momentum is killed.

Literally not one moment of enjoyment in this series that hasn’t immediately been fucked in the ass by them.

    Uh oh… It’s tied 29-29.

    Cue the refs!

  64. 64
    Brian Cronin says:

I like the way the dumb Heat fans moan after every foul, even if it’s obvious

Right? The moan when Wade fouled Jeffries was comical.

  65. 65

    FUCKJOEY CRAWFORD

If Joey Crawford is the one that T’d him up then it’s over for us. Last 20 games that he’s issued technical fouls the team getting the first T is 1-19

  70. 70
    gjknick says:

I think that’s Shump’s role to get hit with a ridiculous T after an amazing dunk and looking the wrong way at someone. TC just being a team player and making up for Shumps absence.

  78. 78
    Matt Park says:

And it’s on plays like that that losing Shump hurts us…

  79. 79
    Brian Cronin says:

Speaking of Game 2 deja vu, Jeffries missing easy shots around the basket.

  83. 83

The heat are a bunch of b**ches…with the flops and dwade chucking bibby’s shoe…on top of the laughing on the benchin gm 1…and the decision… etc…how could anyone root for these jackasses….

    d-mar says:

Chandler looks like a new man tonight

  86. 86
    Brian Cronin says:

    What a play by Chandler!

  87. 87
    Matt Park says:

I’m really liking the offense so far. Lots of side-to-side action. Bibby brought the ball up, passed to the wing and cut to the corner. Same thing on the other side.

  88. 88
    Knicks4Eva says:

    Chandler and Novak doing work!

  89. 89
    Brian Cronin says:

It probably nearly went in but I don’t want Bibby taking pull-up jumpers.

That Heat shot was amazing. Smith’s was nearly as good!!! WOW!

  90. 90
    Brian Cronin says:

Are you allowed to throw an elbow at a defender to clear out space?

You are if you’re Dwyane Wade.

  91. 91
    ruruland says:

Lebron just tackled JR Smith no foul.

  92. 92
    Gideon Zaga says:

    No foul Really.

  93. 93

Wade with a blatant push-off before the baby hook.

  94. 94

Knicks D has been pretty bad. Luckily the Heat’s best 3pt shooters have missed some wide open shots.

  95. 95
    d-mar says:

ruruland: Lebron just tackled JR Smith no foul.

That was truly unbelievable, I just screamed so loud my dog ran out of the room

  96. 96
    Knicks4Eva says:

Ridiculous 2 no calls on that.

  97. 97
    Juany8 says:

Refs are getting smarter, if you only let the heat get away with fouls there is no huge foul disparity afterwards

  98. 98
    Brian Cronin says:

True, Al. The Heat have missed some wide open looks.

  99. 99
    Brian Cronin says:

Refs are getting smarter, if you only let the heat get away with fouls there is no huge foul disparity afterwards

    Ha! Looks like it.

  100. 100

Yet they are still shooting almost 56% so far.

  107. 107
    Z says:

    Brian Cronin:
Did Amar’e even try to collect that miss?

I hope not. At least he’d have the excuse of “I didn’t even try”. As it was, it was pathetic.

  108. 108
    Brian Cronin says:

    Nice rebound, Amar’e! (sarcasm)

I don’t mind him getting beat to a board, but he didn’t even try! Bosh looked shocked that he was all alone with the ball!

  109. 109
    d-mar says:

Need to finish this half strong, if we’re down 10 or more at the half we’re done

Brian, this is the start of what Clyde was talking about.

  111. 111

  112. 112
    2FOR18 says:

Nice Amare a dunk and a block! Now that’s a 20 mil PF!

  113. 113
    ruruland says:

    Great help by Amar’e

  114. 114
    Mulligan says:

Fields needs to perfect some weird kind of bank shot. Seems like such a landry thing to do.

  115. 115
    ognyc says:

and for those that don’t have MSG…what is the start of what Clyde is talking about?

    2FOR18:
Brian, this is the start of what Clyde was talking about.

  116. 116

  117. 117

    Juany8 says:

    BigBlueAL:
Bosh and LeBron have each bitched out at the refs and not gotten a tech.

Can you imagine if the Knicks ever got a friendly whistle? Or a lucky break with injuries?

  119. 119
    Will the Thrill says:

What the fuck was that Melo?

  120. 120
    Mulligan says:

WELP. We lasted about 5 minutes longer! Hopefully the break at the half allows us to regroup.

  121. 121
    BigBlueAL says:

This is some of the worst defense Ive ever seen in a playoff game. Just awful.

  122. 122
    ruruland says:

    Will the Thrill:
What the fuck was that Melo?

    two for one

  123. 123
    BigBlueAL says:

Having said all that, only down 6 at the half. Hopefully Chandler plays more in the 2nd half.

  124. 124
    Mulligan says:

Haha, refs don’t call a foul even when Miami wants to foul

  125. 125
    Will the Thrill says:

Why does JR touch the person’s legs when they are shooting? How many times does he need to be called for a foul??

  126. 126
    Juany8 says:

    Will the Thrill:
What the fuck was that Melo?

2 seconds left on the clock. Believe it or not it makes it hard to score. Melo isn’t the dumbass this board sometimes makes him out to be

  127. 127
    ruruland says:

    BigBlueAL:
This is some of the worst defense Ive ever seen in a playoff game.Just awful.

C’mon buddy. Lebron vs Amar’e in pick and roll? Pretty sure I’ve seen lebron do that to the best pick and roll defenses ever. Amar’e didn’t hedge enough.

  128. 128
    d-mar says:

Breen: “James tried to foul him”…but of course the refs would not hear of it

  129. 129
    Matt Park says:

So…anyone have some adjustments that the Knicks can make for the next half?

  130. 130
    ruruland says:

Free throw count tonight: Miami 14 New York 6

    Series count: 49-17 Miami!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  131. 131
    Juany8 says:

Gotta give Woodson a lot of credit, me made some legit adjustments in the second game. Our offense is much smoother, still too many dumb mistakes to really have a chance though. Having Lin and Shunp back next year (almost certainly improved too) is going to make this a nice team. There’s no way they’re beating the Heat with Shunp out and Chandler limited half the series though

  132. 132
    ruruland says:

Running back on D no matter what happens refwise would be a good start, gave up too many transition baskets

ruruland: C’mon buddy. Lebron vs Amar’e in pick and roll? Pretty sure I’ve seen lebron do that to the best pick and roll defenses ever. Amar’e didn’t hedge enough.

Heat shot 55.6% for the half and as mentioned before Knicks were lucky that Jones, Miller and Chalmers each missed WIDE OPEN 3pters. Not to mention all the layups and dunks they gave up. Knicks have to tighten up their D if they are going to win because they are not going to be able to win a shootout vs the Heat.

  136. 136
    JR Sec 112 says:

Bibby was really good this half. I guess 15 min is his max in a half, but I would like to see him out there as much as possible in the 2nd half. He really settles the team down.

6 is not so bad. Could have been a disaster at the end of the quarter. Just need to hang around until late in the 4th and hope Melo goes crazy.

Man, Amare is invisible out there…

I hope Lin will feel well by next Sunday, so he can play in the Garden. I can then watch on ABC.

Far from watching fun basketball, but the one-man army at least keeping Knicks in the game.

I dont know, watching Melo score against Lebron and Battier (theoretically 2 of the best defensive players in the league) is pretty fun. Just like watching Bernard’s 1-man show back in ’84 was pretty fun….

  143. 143
    Juany8 says:

Knicks missed some wide open shots too, that happens to wry team. Landry and Novak need to stop over helping so stupidl though

  144. 144
    Matt Park says:

Why doesn’t Woodson use Amar’e in more off ball screening action? Set a double screen up for Novak weakside with Amar’e on the baseline and then Amar’e can come over and set a ball screen for ‘Melo strongside if Novak doesn’t get a clean look… Or he can roll to the rim if a Heat defender cheats… That would force the Heat to move on defense, giving ‘Melo more space to work…

  145. 145

STAT really needs to step up in the 2nd half. But the good news is Chandler looks like his old self, very energized.

Because Mike Bibby can’t get him the ball on the move at all. There’s just no threat of penetration

To me, thats why we lost the game – on offense. Amare played ok on O, but his rebounding and D was terrible – maybe blame that on the back a little.

I know all the Melo haters will be out tonight, but, to me, Melo played with a lot of heart tonight. He plays 44 minutes and the entire 2nd half vs. either Battier, who spends zero energy on offense, or Lebron. And then he guards Lebron for most of the game. Down the stretch… when we were down 12, did you think we even had a chance? I didn’t. But then again, the team didn’t exactly look like they believed EITHER.

I mean, whatever, I had zero expectation of winning this series — I DREAM about the possibility of pulling the upset, but I’m a total realist — but I expected more competitive games.

The Heat should win the championship, unfortunately. I’m still fucking angry that we didn’t fall into the 8 spot. We could have made a surprising, momentum building, confidence building run. Against the Heat? NO FUCKING CHANCE

Who has an even worse contract that we can flip STAT for? I’ll maintain optimism that he will find a second life as a useful role player, but his defensive commitment has never been more obviously missing than tonight. Missed rotations, matador D, AWFUL fouls late in the possession. Terrible game.

Its so easy to say ‘Amare should get some more shots’. Like saying ‘Novak should get some more shots’. But the box score doesnt tell you everything. They tried to get Novak more shots – they couldnt. Amare wasnt aggressive enough in the post to get more shots. Its also the PG’s fault. Baron or JR holds the ball too much – then there are only 7-8 sec left on the clock and Melo or JR are your best choices. Hence they lead the team in shots.

    I miss Jeremy Lin.

One big difference with Lin at PG is we alot more foul shots. Either he drives to lane and gets contact or create opportunity for one bigs for aggressive move to hoops. That either ends in a score or foul.

Sure, they all had deficits along with their benefits. So did Melo. Essentially, no one on the Knicks really had an outstanding game (Davis scored well but he played poor defense) which is why they lost. Oh, my friend, you’re right. The Knicks are so dynamic and versatile offensively there’s no excuse for him taking so many shots. Lebron is a point guard. **** is not a point guard. There is little balance in the Knicks offense because there aren’t players that can beat their defender, even on ball reversals.

With Lebron, you have a guy by the name of Wade who destroys defenses on the weakside with his penetration — all of which create ball movement.

**** creates defensive attention in the post. He gets trapped in the pick and roll. Each of these things allow many players in the NBA to function at a higher level, but the Knicks oftentimes don’t have the personnel to take advantage of it.

Lebron being better doesn’t mean Melo wasn’t playing a team game. The team gameplan did not put him into a position where he could move the ball. JR Smith was the point guard for much of the game, for crying out loud! The Knicks ran sets that should accommodate ball movement. They significantly improved player movement– but player movements matters little when you can make a defense pay for overplaying passing lanes, and you cannot get the ball below the three point line on the bounce.

That’s nonsense. You have the cart before the horse. Remember when the NBA superstars lost in the Olympics. You could have said the same thing then. Any player can pass the ball.

LBJ is getting too much penetration, Wade is getting easy catches in the post, two passes and Miller/Chalmers/Battier are wide open for three. Put Chandler back on Haslem/Anthony and have him be the help guy- as it is now everyone is looking to help on LBJ and Wade and the rotations are all out of whack. Brian Cronin says:

I’m more concerned with defense rather than offense at this point- I think the Knicks will get a few more calls in the garden and just that should get them to around 100 pts. The problem is the Heat are getting great looks- even in half-court sets. Let Amar’e guard Bosh- he scored 21 on twelve shots tonight- how much worse could Amar’e be?

I was thinking the same thing at the end of the game. The Knicks had their best lineup on the court and the Heat were still seemingly scoring at will. They would cut off one of the Big 2 and Chalmers, Battier or Miller would be wide open .

  325. 325
    ruruland says:

Brian Cronin: Actually, that’s fair. They did run sets early on like that. They seemed to eventually abandon them, though, as the game went on (I guess because they stopped working after awhile).

Yes, Woodson is to blame, too. He needs to have the knicks playing harder than the Heat, and more like a team.
The Heat put out more energy and player smarter. And of course, more athletic.

Not first half – Melo went and shot the ball on many possession. Iso was first play that was it.
2nd half movement alot better, but that when Melo shot was not falling. Seem like if Amare start to score Melo stop scoring.
But give you that without Lin we don’t really have great PNR person.

Novak, Bibby, and Fields are destroying the Knicks’ D. They overhelp, often without reason, and have no ability to get back to their men. Seriously, trade those 3 for Chalmers, Battier, and Mike Miller and the series is totally changed, it’s not just Miami’s superstars that are killing us (Lebron didn’t have a very good game tonight for one). At some point Woodson is going to have to risk Lebron and Wade finishing over Chandler, and make the other players play tight on shooters. Letting Lebron kick it out to open shooters is the worst defensive strategy a team can possibly have against the Heat.

Ok, I’ve been an optimist so far, but now its time to concede its not going to happen. I feel like the crowd on Thursday will realize this and somehow will this team to victory. And if they do, even if they end up losing the series in 5, it will be very, very sweet.

    max fisher-cohen says:

ruruland: When teams overplay passing lanes and you can’t penetrate at more than one position it’s what happens.

This is true. You have to have ball handlers against this team to not only deal with the ball pressure, but because they are so quick, you aren’t always going to have the time to get a shot off. Sometimes you need a headfake and then a drive. If you look at Dallas last year, their key adjustment was adding Barea to the starting lineup. His extra ball handling and ability to penetrate made it easier to punish Miami when they helped on Dirk.

That said, we need more consistency from our first options as well. Melo started off well and kept us in the game, but James just wore him out. Stoudemire, meanwhile, only got 9 shots but made 6 of them. I worry that Woodson’s affection for isolations is really hurting us. Hell, let JR Smith iso some just to give Melo a break if you are so afraid of a more complex offense. Chalmers and Mike Miller are mediocre defenders — I’ll take a Smith fallaway against them over a Melo fallaway with James draped over him like a cheap coat.

Also, did you all hear the stat they gave about Woodson? His teams have lost their last 6 playoff games now, and all the losses have been by double digits. 3 of the 5 have been by 30+ points. Kind of a scary stat.

Yes but those kind of players can be acquired over time (look at Lin, Shump, JR) right now the Knicks don’t have them, partly because of injuries. Jorts and Jordan have also shown promise, the Knicks really need to have better players than Fields and Bibby out there against the Heat though, there is simply no one the Heat have that is close to that bad.

When do the Knick have time for that? We don’t even have enough to resign Novak as 3pt specialist. He not defensive specialist – killing him over defense is pointless.

Knicks starting lineup pretty much going to TC, Amare, Melo, Field and Lin next year.

Shump probably out till December and has play way back into starting lineup.

Setting strong screens is a death knell against the Heat, especially with our ball handlers. The Heat like to trap. If you set a strong screen, that requires that you stay muddled up with the other four players for a longer period of time. This allows the trapping Heat defense to close the window for a pass before the screener and the dribbler have the spacing to make that pass.

I know we struggled to score in game 1, so everyone is looking at the offense…but we lost this game defensively. If you looked at the shot chart, the vast majority of Wade’s shots were in the paint, b/c we fell asleep at the wheel on cuts (Landry) or didn’t push him out of the paint and not allow him to get position before he catches the ball (JR). Our close out help defense was also mediocre leaving Miller and Battier open for WIDE open threes.

I guess we’ll see more of Novak with Amar’e likely to miss at least one of the next two. Oddly, Novak’s probably been better on D than on offense. While he does stretch the floor, anytime he touches the ball that doesn’t involve shooting it gets pretty ugly- he never makes a quick pass that will lead to an open shot, Even just dumping the ball out to the perimeter takes him forever- really kills any offensive flow.
