what Melo really is is what Brian C has been saying all along and what Owen said again recently, the third best player on a genuine title contender. if NY could somehow add someone like Chris Paul to Chandler and Melo, they’d be in the mix.

I’d say that my position all along has been that I did not like the trade, but not because of anything to do with Melo himself, as he’s a very good player, but rather the construction of the team. For instance, if the Knicks had Melo and Chandler and $20 million to spend on a free agent, I’d be thrilled. It’s that the team already had STAT on it, and I just don’t think the two go well together, or at least not well enough that I’d want to commit $40 million to them (unless, of course, as I repeated many times, that getting Melo meant that Paul would take a pay cut to come to New York to form a new Big Three with Melo and STAT. Then $40 million would be cheap for the two. That, though, did not happen). It’s nothing against Melo as a player in and of himself.

No one is saying the Knicks are bad. The Knicks just aren’t very good either.

Last year, every team the Heat played in the playoffs played them closer than the Knicks have. Even Philly managed to win one game and keep several others close. The Knicks have now lost 3 straight by double digits. This Heat team is a contender, but is not anywhere near the great teams of the last two decades. Spurs and Lakers in early 2000s would have destroyed this team. Heck, IMO this years Spurs is going to dismantle Miami in the finals.
