2012 Game Thread: New York vs. Denver

An interesting game tonight as New York (6-9) host Denver (11-5). Denver is off to a great start thanks to a very strong showing on offense (3rd in offensive rating at 107.7) and a solid if not dominate defense (15th at 10.2). The Knicks meanwhile continue their struggle to find any fluidity on offense. New York has fallen to 24th in offensive rating (98.8). The lone bright spot for New York is the better than average team defense (11th at 101.1).
While many people will focus on Anthony vs. Gallanari, I think the far more interesting and important match up is Shumpert vs. Lawson. Shumpert is a streaky shooter, somewhat turnover prone, and doesn’t always make the best decisions on the break. Having said that he is a tough defender. He plays passing lanes very well and he keep pressure on the ball. I think the key to disrupting the Denver offense starts with making things difficult for Ty Lawson (efg% 50.8). Forcing Lawson into bad shots while cutting off passing lanes is the best way to slow down Denver’s offense.
Denver is somewhat foul prone (21st in the NBA in personal fouls). New York might want to try drawing contact and earning points at the line, rather than taking bad three point shots.

Part of the problem with the pick and roll game with Amare is the lack of contact on screens. It can be hard to tell if the guards just suck at setting up their man to run into it or if Amare sets weak screens or both, but something definitely needs to improve there.

This quarter makes a compelling case for compelling bench play/support as the difference. Kind of amazing that the Knicks played so well w. just stat on the court and he didn’t even score much (although he looked solid defensively)
its a great idea makes the game simple no melo iso and try to make plays for amare at the same time and no defensive liabilities

2) Great ball movement before Melo comes in. Usually I agree with those who say not to blame Melo for EVERYTHING, but in this case, Melo comes back in and takes a quick shot. Then on the next play, the other 4 knicks play keep-away from him to keep the ball moving. Then Melo turns into a whiny bitch and doesn’t play defense. WTF?

I thought that was the best half STAT has played in quite a while. Took good shots and played very active D (3 steals!) It also shows how important it is for bench players like Walker and Douglas to actually make shots.

Stat has really been non-existent, he’s been terrible without a true point guard it seems. He can score points in iso-situations because he usually turns it over, he’s also not making his jumpshots. However, if he just rebounds and defends I’m fine with that.
Aside from Harrington going off in the 4th quarter the Knicks D has been pretty good all game.

Honestly, I don’t mean to be a jerk here. it’s just been a frustrating game, watching Anthony chuck and chuck while Galinari and Mozgov look like they players we dreamed they’d become at the start of last year. I really don’t mind watching Gallinari have a great game, but watching Al Buckets prance up and down the court was truly painful.
I know most people here don’t like the term “Knuggets”, but it’s actually pretty scary. The following players all have ties to the Knicks (some looser than others):
Gallo
W. Chandler (RFA)
Mozgov
Brewer
Harrington
Nene (drafted by NY @#7 in 02)
Lawson (many thought should be drafted by NY in ’09)
Miller (almost came to NY in FA)
Fernandez (almost came to NY via trade – rumors that he requested a trade to here (i might be making that last part up))
Faried (some (few?) thought should be drafted by NY in ’11 (tho I prefer Shump Shump)
Melo got a posse a beatches in nyc.
I feel the opposite. Harrington was a stop gap– basically just Jamal Crawford but one less year of contract to get to a new era faster. Gallo was our building block for that new era. He carried our hopes and dreams that he would develop into a primary option. And he has. It hurts really bad right now.
It’s a Melo-bury world.
Good point on Lawson, we drafted Jordan Hill instead (could’ve drafted Jennings, who didn’t have a bad last game if I remember correctly). Then we shipped off Jordan Hill in hopes to get 2 Max star players. Pieces of our core along with that draft pick had to be shipped off for Melo. Good luck, good game.
As you can see with the Knuggets, you can build a team with depth. They don’t have fake stars who earn max money.

After performances and losses such as these, the Melo trade will continue to haunt us over what could’ve been if we had stayed pat with our hand. We would’ve had a decent point guard in Felton with young pieces such as Gallo (and maybe Wilson Chandler if resigned). We would’ve still had Shumpert (as we likely would’ve stayed as the 7th seed or the 8th seed) and keep our draft picks for next year and the year after the next. In addition, we would’ve had 2nd round draft picks that Walsh was able to obtain from the David Lee trade.
We could’ve signed Tyson Chandler (which I guess would not allow us from keeping Wilson, correct). Overall, that’s a pretty decent core of a team. Maybe we don’t have shot at a title, but at least we won’t be middling with hero fucking Melo ball. And you don’t have a shot at the title if you can’t even make the playoffs with hero Melo ball.

I think we overreacted with trying to clear cap space, it wasn’t Walsh’s fault he had to shoot for the stars. He was just left with total shit from Isiah who mired the team in capspace hell. If you look at every dumbfounded move/trade/signing by Isiah the repercussions were felt for years. Signing Curry we had to give away draft picks.
Signing Jeffries and Jerome James, we had to attach young pieces to sell those contracts. We were really fucked to begin with. It’s like the Knick management created an economic bubble, which was not sustainable, the only way for a correction is a recession to leverage all the bad debt. In this case, the bad debt from all the shit contracts/players that Isiah signed. Instead of just correcting and waiting for the debt to just be written off, we went for the bail out option which was selling all out future and young pieces off. Bailing ourselves will just cause the inevitable crash, as we will likely see right now. We don’t have enough depth or talent, we will likely need to wait until Amare and Melo just retire then rebuild through the draft.
So we’re looking at another decade? Oye.

they should have played chicken with denver/melo at the deadline. if he forced his way to nj, fine. if denver had reasonable expectations in a trade, fine too.
they could have stuck with the pre deadline team adding shumpert and jorts through the draft and then decide whether to keep or move chandler and 10-15 million in cap space depending on what to do with chandler. they would have another 10-12 million spot opening at the end of this season when turiaf and felton expired.
you walsh could have made a trade for paul, howard or d-will with all those assets and picks?

the plan was perfect and the execution was fine until jimmy d screwed the pooch.
walsh broke down the team as best as he could with all the albatrosses isiah hung around his neck. he opened room for 2 legit stars and played for the best 2 players available (lebron and wade) but lebron was too yellow to take the historic challenge.
he moved to plan b with amar’e and filled out the roster with felton and mozgov. amar’e was second team all nba and deservedly so. felton played above expectations. the team was an above .500 team with young improving players a first and a second pick (shumpert and jorts) with big cap space coming after the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
if denver wanted to be reasonable, walsh would have sat chilly til the deadline and waited for the cheapest price for melo. if he could
have landed him at a reasonable price and not had to dismantle his team, i’m sure he would have.
if not, he had all those assets and big cap space after 2011 and 20012 seasons.
however, the recovering addict prematurely ejaculated all over us.

Was at the game. Awesome game. And I can report it’s just as frustrating watching Melo in person. He hit some great shots at the end of regulation, got to give him credit for that, but he just strangles an offense.
I know its the cardinal sin for a sports fan but I was feeling some seriously mixed emotions watching Mozgov (OBEY!!!!), Gallinari, and Lawson, who in my own mind we drafted three years ago.
Tyson Chandler is the best Knick by a long stretch right now. It’s not even close. He has the impact on the defensive end Carmelo is supposed to have on the offensive end. I don’t know what the box score says but as soon as he went out we became a rebounding sieve in overtime.
Landry seemed to play really well. If you get him the ball and some space he’ll get to the rim. Hitting a few jumpers early seemed to open it up for him. You can tell he struggles with Melo how do you time a cut to the basket when the guy who has the ball will only pass if the shot isn’t available. I suppose wait till there are 2 seconds on the 24….
I know it’s silly to say something coming off one big game, but why we traded Gallinari, who is not yet coming into his prime, I don’t know. Well, I have said that before. I was never his biggest fan but he’s definitely thriving in Denver. I’d have a hard time taking Melo over him straight up. So much younger, such a better shooter, and so much more a team player.
Garden was awesome. Nothing better than Knicks fans.

I disagree because Melo wasn’t the one who was airballing wide open 3′s… only to watch Andre Miller make a 30 foot heave. It’s almost like the Knicks somehow have bad karma for all the bad shots and bad defense they play. When they do actually play right everything goes terribly anyways.
a couple of points about the game:
1) when the ball moved, fields became a useful player , again.
2) shumpert is going to mature into a plus player on the offensive end at the 2 and a plus plus defender. a stone steal @17
3) the defensive set-up and execution on the lob with 0.3 seconds left is a firable offense in and of itself. has anyone ever seen a player wider open on a play like that ever.
4) the knick’s coaching staff should grab melo by the throat and show him the 4 consecutive possessions in the 4th quarter where he drove it to the rim and scored on all 4. lots more of those, dish it when the double comes and cut out the fall away 21 footers. jesus!
yeah….. they are unlucky…… that’s the problem.

I’m not sure if that was sarcastic or not bobneptune, although my larger point is that they’d played bad most of the game, don’t particularly deserve to win, but would have anyways if not for that 3 by Miller/ the ridiculous 3 from Shannon Brown in the phoenix game, both after a good defensive possession. We’re not a good team. Good teams bench guys like Douglas and, honestly, even Stoudemire for continued poor play and bad decisions. Thibs in Chicago has benched both Boozer and Noah in key playoff games when they were underperforming. Until we have a few more role players on the team though, guys like Jorts and Shumpert just aren’t capable of providing a consistent game by game effort. We’re stuck underperforming until we have more than 4 players capable of playing consistently, although I liked what I saw from Landry for the most part.

That’s what I like to hear from Melo, and Amar’e. Even though Melo was AWFUL this game. The only way the offense will run correctly is if Melo changes how he plays the game of basketball, and it sounds like he may be willing to do that, if it results in wins. I always knew Amar’e wouldn’t care about his numbers or even touches as long as they get the win, so I think the team will eventually involve him more in the offense. BTW..how long would it take to lose about 20 pounds of muscle? Because he definitely should be looking into that.
