One thing about last year when STAT was out is that the 3 was unable to take advantage of his mismatch because most teams put there 3 on Melo which left fields with the opposing team’s 4. SO far Brewer has been cutting and hitting his open shots and tonight he might be guarded by big baby who they need to score alot. So he needs to make him work.

    Brian Cronin says:

The team definitely does look a lot different when the threes are not dropping. I mean, they’ll still win this one easily, but if Orlando was a better team, I’d be a bit worried.

It’s early and they looked the same last game after the lay off.

  4. 4
    Brian Cronin says:

True, good point. They likely have a lot of rust. Way too much time off.

  5. 5
    Juany8 says:

I actually have a bad feeling about this game, I think the Knicks pull it out but nobody is happy with the performance….

  6. 6
    Brian Cronin says:

That’s what it looks like to start. Juan. Still, good teams win ugly some time!

  7. 7
    yellowboy90 says:

    Under 25

  8. 8
    yellowboy90 says:

they’re playing good offense they just need to step up on D. Mainly box out and help the helper.

  9. 9
    matte sideburns says:

    Someone told Pablo to shoot.

  10. 10
    Juany8 says:

I also have to point out that if JR can keep playing close to this level throughout the season (I’m sure the shooting drops off, I’m mostly talking about effort and mindset) Then him and Brewer are the best value at the wing in the league, not counting rookies. Can’t believe Chicago just let Brewer go for the minimum (as well as the rest of the league), even if he wasn’t a good fit next to Deng and Rose.

  11. 11
    yellowboy90 says:

I liked Brewer attacking Davis off the dribble and will love to see What Smith will do if Big baby is guarding him.

  12. 12
    JK47 says:

Only one turnover in the first quarter for NYK.

  13. 13
    ephus says:

Well, this is just awful. Hope she recovers.

  14. 14
    Brian Cronin says:

Can’t believe Chicago just let Brewer go for the minimum (as well as the rest of the league), even if he wasn’t a good fit next to Deng and Rose.

Chicago’s offseason was outrageous. Hurting their team just to avoid paying luxury tax. Such bullshit. The Knicks are so lucky that so many other teams are also cheap, so Brewer was available so cheaply.

But yeah, Smith and Brewer are playing amazing so far this year.

  15. 15
    yellowboy90 says:

Sheed was the first big in again. I think thye might come out with Sheed. Camby, and Novak to start the 3rd

  16. 16
    yellowboy90 says:

    Sheed chants

  17. 17
    ephus says:

Nice play by JR Smith to feed Sheed.

  18. 18
    Juany8 says:

Interesting counterpoint to everyone correctly pointing out that some of the Knicks shooting will cool off: Novak hasn’t shot that well. If he starts shooting as well as he did last year, that will make up for a good bit of the loss

  19. 19
    yellowboy90 says:

    Does every city love Sheed?

  20. 20
    ephus says:

Break out the rock salt, Prigioni just took (and made) a step-back 3 pointer early in the shot clock.

  21. 21
    jon abbey says:

Chicago’s option on Brewer was for $4.37M, not the minimum.

    nice to see Prigioni shooting!

  22. 22
    Juany8 says:

    jon abbey:
Chicago’s option on Brewer was for $4.37M, not the minimum.

    nice to see Prigioni shooting!

Could they not decline the option and bring him back at a lower price? I’m honestly not sure about this, and it doesn’t explain why nobody went for him at that price.

  23. 23
    nicos says:

I have to say the bloom is off the rose for me a bit with Rasheed- he is so slooooow. His rotations have been two steps late.

  24. 24
    jon abbey says:

once they declined the option, he’s a FA and CAA (um, I mean the Knicks) scooped him up. :)

  25. 25
    jon abbey says:

    nicos:
I have to say the bloom is off the rose for me a bit with Rasheed- he is so slooooow. His rotations have been two steps late.

he’s way too quick to shoot 3s, that’s what pissed off Boston fans about him in his last year in the league.

  26. 26
    domiknick says:

    trap game?

  27. 27
    Brian Cronin says:

$4.37 is a fair salary for a guy like Brewer when it is not long term and it does not affect your roster flexibility.

  28. 28
    Brian Cronin says:

    trap game?

Clearly. Except I would note that the term often means a loss, and I don’t think that the Knicks are going to lose this game. I’d be quite shocked if they don’t pull it out.

  29. 29
    JK47 says:

    Ray Felton shoots too much.

  30. 30
    yellowboy90 says:

Bad Melo showed up. Pouting way to much. Yes he is getting fouled but dang.

  31. 31
    domiknick says:

where was Camby once Chandler went out with the 3 fouls? Would have liked to see him out there to run some pnr rather than going small and trying to match Orlando.

  32. 32
    Glew says:

Yeah he seems to be dogging it tonight, looking like he really doesn’t want to play or is pissed off at something

  33. 33
    jon abbey says:

    JK47:
    Ray Felton shoots too much.

it’s not too much, it’s too quickly. shoot as much as you want in the last 8 seconds or so of the shot clock, try to get your teammates a good look before that.

  34. 34
    thenoblefacehumper says:

Somehow I think we all knew that this game wouldn’t be nearly as easy as it should be. I guess it’s the Knicks fan sense.

  35. 35
    ephus says:

I can’t help myself. I really enjoy JR Smith.

  36. 36
    Gideon Zaga says:

Wow what a game! Im on edge man.

  37. 37
    d-mar says:

Play badly and win, boys, play badly and win.

  38. 38
    Nick C. says:

At least JR is on tonight

  39. 39
    Brian Cronin says:

What a game by JR! WOW!

  40. 40
    art vandelay says:

Chandler looks a bit discombobulated out there, especially defensively, surprisingly. Off night for him…

  41. 41
    Nick C. says:

Finally a successful alley oop! Hulk from JR, naturally

  42. 42
    Juany8 says:

So did Melo sleep with a ref’s wife or something? There is not way he wasn’t fouled at some point (or every point…)

  43. 43
    yellowboy90 says:

Do they call a fouls in Orlando?

  44. 44
    art vandelay says:

A couple of nice Novakaine daggers in the 4th would be beautiful to create some separation!

  45. 45
    Gideon Zaga says:

Why do the refs hate Melo so much, are you kidding me

  46. 46
    yellowboy90 says:

    Ruru is going nuts somewhere.lol.

  47. 47
    Brian Cronin says:

    Not a good shot, Sheed.

  48. 48
    yellowboy90 says:

Does Chandler still have the Flu?

  49. 49
    Brian Cronin says:

My only fear with Sheed was that he’d get too many minutes because of his rep. This game this seems like that is happening. Sheed was a great player back in his day, but he’s not that guy anymore.

  50. 50
    yellowboy90 says:

I have a need a need for no more Sheed

  51. 51
    Nick C. says:

Yeah, I coulda sworn Sheed was quoted talking about post ups.

  52. 52
    Brian Cronin says:

Afflaflo is having one of the worst games I’ve ever seen from him.

  53. 53
    yellowboy90 says:

DId Chandler forget how to roll? Flu Chandler is back

  54. 54
    yellowboy90 says:

Maybe Brewer should come back in for Novak

  55. 55
    Nick C. says:

    Melo!!!

  56. 56
    yellowboy90 says:

I wish Melo would take that charge.

  57. 57
    Brian Cronin says:

See? They’re too good to lose to this team.

  58. 58
    yellowboy90 says:

    Nice bball being played.

  59. 59
    jock cowles says:

    FELTINSANITY!!

  60. 60
    yellowboy90 says:

I like the idea instead of taking three.

  61. 61
    yellowboy90 says:

Who else love Kidd and the team play good bball to close out the game. Maybe Orlando should have kept the kids in.

  62. 62
    d-mar says:

JR saved the Knicks asses tonight, his 3rd quarter was the key to the game

  63. 63
    ruruland says:

    yellowboy90:
    Ruru is going nuts somewhere.lol.

Nah. I’ve seen it happen to him too many times. It was pretty egregious tonight but whatever.

This is what great teams do. Stick around, have a little lead and then win the last 10 minutes.

You can’t play 82 games with more energy than your opponent, cetainly not for 48 minutes each game.

Pretty low effort ugly basketball early, and the team was out of whack with the insane lak of whistles imo

  64. 64
    ruruland says:

    d-mar:
JR saved the Knicks asses tonight, his 3rd quarter was the key to the game

They still would have figured it out IMO.

  65. 65
    yellowboy90 says:

    d-mar:

Yup and Kidd started the run.

  66. 66
    Nick C. says:

Am I imagining it or did they build up their two leads when Kidd was on the court?

  67. 67
    ruruland says:

yellowboy90: Yup and Kidd started the run.

Kidd’s been great and his statistical production is low.

Melo creating consistent open looks in half-court.

JR playing great. Will be nice to add Amar’e and Shump to this.

  68. 68
    yellowboy90 says:

How good are the Knicks that they play terrible D but still keep the Magic under 90.

  69. 69

That defense in the last 12 minutes was really good.

  73. 73
    yellowboy90 says:

    Melo just Lined

  74. 74
    yellowboy90 says:

Felton really shot 23 shots. There where some early jumpers and some missed layups but wow. I don’t know how I feel about that.

  75. 75
    jock cowles says:

Unbelievable…the Raptors have scored FIVE (5) POINTS through the first 11:55 of the 4th quarter.

Still up by 2 on the Pacers with 5 seconds left.

  76. 76
    yellowboy90 says:

In time for Duke and Kentucky.

  77. 77
    jon abbey says:

Smith was great, but Kidd turned the game around for good again, and Melo with some big shots as always. the double figure win streak and keeping teams under 90 streak continue, at least temporarily.

  78. 78
    DRed says:

That was a terrible, terrible performance by a team that one by double digits for the 5th time in a row. I guess that’s a good sign.

  79. 79
    DRed says:

    I meant we won. Damnit.

  80. 80

  81. 81
    jon abbey says:

    yellowboy90:
Run coaches run under 13 TOs

yep, NY far and away leading the league in turnover differential at 6.7 and a +11 (20 to 9) to add to that tonight.

  82. 82
    yellowboy90 says:

Just think how JR would be under another coach when he was so upset about not being a starter. I have to give Smith hos due to. I have always been a fan and its nice to see him playing so well.

Also, I always though Kidd was playing possum in the pre-season and I am glad I was right. What a great stabilizer.

  83. 83
    yellowboy90 says:

It’s early but it looks like Harden and Smith had a Freaky Friday moment in the off-season.

  84. 84
    JK47 says:

JR Smith sure is playing his ass off this season. Man is he deadly when he gets it going.

The Knicks didn’t play great in this game, but they kept their own turnovers under control (only 9) and forced quite a few (20). They’re doing what it takes to get W’s. I’m starting to believe.

  85. 85
    jon abbey says:

they’ve got to figure out a way to get Novak open and get him the ball more often.

  86. 86
    Gideon Zaga says:

This was a good practice game for Thursdays game, the ball movement and backdoor passes by the Magic were crisp. Expect the spurs to play the same way with better personnel.

  87. 87
    BigBlueAL says:

Didnt see the game since I just got home but judging from the comments and box score it might be time for Camby to start getting Sheed’s minutes huh.

  88. 88
    jon abbey says:

Sheed would be a lot more helpful if he’d mostly stay in the post on offense, he is probably the best big man offensive post player we’ve got (not counting Melo as a big man). but teams have been trying to get him to do that for years, he loves to float outside and shoot bushels of threes.

  89. 89
    jon abbey says:

Melo having to play 43 minutes to beat Orlando is not a good thing.

Not quite Camby didn’t look that good. None off the bigs looked that good.

Also, Did having Smith at the 3 take Affalo off of Melo. I have no reason why they played Davis on Melo.

How do you feel about Raymond Felton so far? I know you hated the move in the offseason.

  92. 92
    Brian Cronin says:

Sheed would be a lot more helpful if he’d mostly stay in the post on offense,

Ay-yep. But you’re right, he won’t do it.

  93. 93
    Brian Cronin says:

My winning streak in starting game thread continues! Well, not counting the playoffs, of course. ;)

  94. 94
    Brian Cronin says:

Felton really shot 23 shots. There where some early jumpers and some missed layups but wow. I don’t know how I feel about that.

On a regular basis you don’t want it, but now and then it’s not a big deal.

  95. 95
    Brian Cronin says:

Charlotte is .500! If the playoffs started today, they’d be in the playoffs!!

  96. 96
    johnlocke says:

Just caught up on DVR… I wanted to reach into the TV and choke Rasheed…horrible defense, I mean HORRIBLE and too many threes.

JR Smith and JCrawford are the two 6th men of the year candidates at this point.

Kudos to Woody for putting JR in for Brewer 1 min into the 3rd quarter. I’m starting to not like the Sheed over Kurt Thomas move. Kurt plays solid D, good help D and plays within himself. Cut down Sheed’s minutes, play Camby a little more and get Kurt in the game.

    Good defense in the 4th.

  97. 97
    jon abbey says:

Brewer had some knee soreness, he said he’ll be fine for Thursday but that’s not cool.

    Spurs/Lakers just started on NBA-TV…

  98. 98
    johnlocke says:

Brew played well in the 1st half, but JR is playing out of his mind right now. Playing near-All-Star level and all around basketball…and consistency (*so far)…very impressed with JR

    jon abbey says:

Knicks the first team ever to hold their first five opponents of the year all to 40 points or less in the second half.

  101. 101
    JC Knickfan says:

Yes Knicks won, but should Felton really taking 23 shots? He shooting whooping 0.481 TS% coming into this game and about get even lower.

  102. 102
    Brian Cronin says:

Yeah, JC, but that’s the deal with this team. Yes, Felton is not a good shooter and he shouldn’t shoot so much (and he really hasn’t in the other games – this is an outlier), but the Knick guard position was so bad last year that Felton is still a big upgrade. It is like back in 2010-11 when Felton was replacing Duhon. He just has to be decent and the team is improved a lot.

  103. 103
    BigBlueAL says:

Felton is who he is. His TS% will hover around 50% all year, what he needs to continue to do is keep his TO’s down, his asts per game at around 7 and not take many shots which before tonight he had been doing (averaging 12 FGA/g). Also keep up the solid D he has been playing for the most part.

Hey Lin so far this season has a TS% of .493!!

  104. 104
    thenoblefacehumper says:

    JC Knickfan:
Yes Knicks won, but should Felton really taking 23 shots? He shooting whooping 0.481 TS% coming into this game and about get even lower.

It’s not the ideal roadmap to victory, but tonight he did hit some big shots. So long as he knows this isn’t the norm, it’ll be fine.

  105. 105
    Kurt says:

Regarding Felton, also keep in mind that a lot of his jump shots came because his man went under the screen. You have to make them pay for that. He also had some nice layups. Also, he had to create the offense when it wasn’t flowing.

  106. 106
    BigBlueAL says:

It is nice to be complaining a bit about a game the Knicks won by 10 which improved their record to 5-0 :-)

Lillard has been really impressive so far.
