Lets go NYK!!! Time to start the season off properly

    Let’s do this thing

    DRed says:

Shump’s flat top is so ridiculous

  4. 4
    Gideon Zaga says:

Knicks Win! Book it. My bookie is still under water.

    Bad call!! That’s no charge.

  6. 6
    DRed says:

    Own goal for Kidd

  7. 7
    Thomas B. says:

Say what you will about Ray Felton, he gets the ball past the Heat pressure far better than Lin could.

  8. 8
    DRed says:

Kidd can still pass, apparently. Nice ballmovement so far. Felton looks good

  9. 9
    Frank says:

Man this looks good so far. Felton looks really quick- is going to be a big problem for someone like Ray Allen to defend. And GREAT spacing on offense so far.

  10. 10
    Thomas B. says:

It all looks good when the shots go down.

  11. 11
    massive says:

Halfway through the first and no Carmelo Anthony isolation plays. Beautiful.

  12. 12
    Juany8 says:

Knicks offense looks better than it was at any point last season. Either Kidd was a great pickup or continuity does matter. Even THCJ might start paying lip service to things like chemistry if the Nuggets keep playing like the worst team in the league lol

  13. 13
    Juany8 says:

Also, Melo just shut down Wade. Anyone who says Melo is a straight up bad defender this season no longer has credibility. Still hoping he’ll do it every game.

  14. 14
    Gideon Zaga says:

    These sets are stupid

  15. 15
    Gideon Zaga says:

They would still say it, perception is reality.

    Haha Melo

    max fisher-cohen says:

great start. No settling for midrange jumpshots. Physical on both ends of the floor. A little help from the hot outside shooting and Miami missing a few open threes.

  21. 21
    DRed says:

This may be the high point of the season, but it’s been fun to watch.

  22. 22
    Unreason says:

    That’s a good start

  23. 23
    d-mar says:

Love what I see, but as we all know, first quarters mean almost nothing in an NBA game. Good to be on the plus side though.

  24. 24
    EB says:

Say what you want about Melo but when he’s shooting like this its fun to watch!

  25. 25

Apparently Melo thinks he’s in Nigeria.

    Robtachi says:

JR and his long step-back twos.

  30. 30
    Gideon Zaga says:

There it.is the first JR patented step back jumper. Hey at least it came with 5 on the clock.

  31. 31
    Juany8 says:

Gotta say, this game shows why you pick up veterans. The ball movement is worlds better than it was at any point last season, and Thomas and Kidd are playing a big part in that. Know who else is? JR and Melo, who seem to be paying attention to guys like Kidd more than they ever would have to Lin. Felton also looks pretty nice so far, he won’t be a bad 4th option.

  32. 32
    jock cowles says:

In the words of the once-great Amare……THE KNICKS ARE BACK! On TV, anyway.

  33. 33
    Juany8 says:

    Gideon Zaga:
There it.is the first JR patented step back jumper.Hey at least it came with 5 on the clock.

Play obviously broke down. The selfish thing to do at that point would be passing it off to let someone else jack up a harder shot. You can’t run a pick and roll with 5 seconds on the clock…

  34. 34
    EB says:

I think Jeff Van Gundy may have just referred to JR Smith as a smart player!?!

  35. 35
    Thomas B. says:

    Robtachi:
JR and his long step-back twos.

I liked him better when he stepped into the shot a drew fouls.

    Juany8:

I think woodsons training camp and our pg situation makes our offense better. The 3p% is fools gold but the ball movement is wonderful

  37. 37
    Thomas B. says:

    &1

  38. 38
    Juany8 says:

Pretty much every time Anthony drives to the rim he either gets a basket or someone gets the offensive rebound. It’s awesome to watch, he’s matching up perfectly against Lebron. Gotta say I almost wouldn’t mind if Amar’e took a while to come back, why deal with the crappy defense, rebounding, and passing? Does this game not prove that a team that moves the ball well and does the little things right can match right up with Miami (if they have a DPOY in the middle to stabilize the defense lol)

  39. 39
    d-mar says:

Love that the Celts are getting their ass kicked at home by the Bucks

  40. 40
    Unreason says:

I’d like to see them pick up the pressure in the last 2 min of the half and keep Miami from regaining their balance.

  41. 41
    Juany8 says:

And Melo grinds it all to a halt… Kidd needs to come back in

  42. 42
    Thomas B. says:

Take note of the change in ball movement when Kidd is on the bench.

  43. 43
    EB says:

    Now bad Melo…

  44. 44
    Juany8 says:

Lebron and Wade are just throwing the ball up at the basket and making shots. Heat offense is doing terrible, they’ve been completely shut down by the Knicks

  45. 45
    Gideon Zaga says:

    Yes good news!

    d-mar:
Love that the Celts are getting their ass kicked at home by the Bucks

  46. 46
    Gideon Zaga says:

Oh oh, Melo when asked why the offense is clicking saids, “we got veterans, we got guys, who know how to play basketball” (shots fired to u know who)

  47. 47
    d-mar says:

At this rate Melo will attempt 38 shots, which is not a recipe for success. I do like how he’s getting after it on D though.

  48. 48
    Michael Cline says:

19 shots for Melo in the first half. He is playing hard on both ends, but someone else has to take some offense for us to win. Hopefully good J.R. will show up soon and felton can get some easy dump offs to Chandler. He us doing a good job so far of penetrating

  49. 49
    Unreason says:

They stopped passing and let them back in, but overall a great first half. I hope Felton doesn’t get a free pass to chuck. Between Kidd and Prig they can keep getting better shots if Felton can’t help himself.

  50. 50
    EB says:

    Gideon Zaga:
Oh oh, Melo when asked why the offense is clicking saids, “we got veterans,we got guys, who know how to play basketball” (shots fired to u know who)

No, I don’t? Just sounds like a complement to the team.

  51. 51
    Gideon Zaga says:

What do you guys think about the pace?

  52. 52
    Juany8 says:

Sidenote from the Rockets game: Toney Douglas is still awful at basketball. That is all

  53. 53
    Thomas B. says:

Wilbon called the game “Boston Miami.” Should we be insulted or proud?

  54. 54
    EB says:

I’m not sure if Felton looks exceptionally fast out there or I’m just too used to seeing Douglas and Bibby dribble it up the floor.

Juany8: Sidenote from the Rockets game: Toney Douglas is still awful at basketball. That is all

  55. 55
    Juany8 says:

Also relevant: Atlanta is nowhere near as good as the Knicks lol, they can’t defend shit, Josh Smith and Al Horford can’t be EVERYWHERE

  56. 56
    Gideon Zaga says:

Am I the only one having that feeling that the MIA duck fastbreak offense will be unleashed 2nd half

  57. 57
    Gideon Zaga says:

Half Times are shorter too. You go David Stern.

  58. 58
    Gideon Zaga says:

    Now too much ball movement

  59. 59
    Gideon Zaga says:

Melo not getting the calls, getting frustrated

  60. 60
    Thomas B. says:

    Gideon Zaga:
Half Times are shorter too. You go David Stern.

Half time in half the time. Maybe we should call it “quarter time”?

  61. 61
    Juany8 says:

    EB:
I’m not sure if Felton looks exceptionally fast out there or I’m just too used to seeing Douglas and Bibby dribble it up the floor.

Lin couldn’t dribble up against Miami either. I gotta say, I am very bummed that we didn’t keep Dragic instead of going for Lin. Lin has a higher upside, but Dragic is just better right now. Atlanta is simply taking the ball out of Harden’s hands and it’s killing the offense.

    VETERAN LEADERSHIP AND SMARTS!!! :)

  63. 63
    Michael Cline says:

Why you would ever leave Kidd open behind the arc is beyond me. He take 15 yrs to get the shot off, but it has become deadly these past few seasons.

Love Brewer’s role on this team!

  64. 64
    David Crockett says:

Holy crap. It’s basketball season. So not ready yet.

I was dotting the i’s on a paper and just turned it on for the start of the 3rd quarter.

Niiiice. I really think I’m gonna love having JKidd on this team.

    :)

  65. 65
    Thomas B. says:

    Dr. JR and Mr. Hyde.
Looks like we got Hyde tonight.

  66. 66
    Unreason says:

I don’t know why JR doesn’t drive more when things aren’t falling. It’s like he forgets how good he is at slashing.

+1 on J Kidd. The guy just knows how to play basketball – he makes smart decisions and is a pest on D. Great pickup.

It’s the Heat, so the lead will never be comfortable. But for now, the Knicks seem to have things working well. Still plenty of ball to be played.

  72. 72
    BigBlueAL says:

    This is freaking incredible.

  73. 73
    Juany8 says:

So it’s fair to say that 52 wins is very realistic for this team. The veteran pickups were freaking brilliant!

  74. 74
    d-mar says:

Normally I’d be skeptical about our ability down the road to win games with this insane 3 point shooting, but these are good open looks by good shooters as the result of penetration and great ball movement.

Glen Grunwald has some really bad hair.

    Come on Glen.

My buddy (Laker fan) says even if you took away some of those threes the Knicks are scoring so well they’d still have scored on some of those possessions.

The big question offensively is, other than ‘Melo can anyone post if you need it?

  77. 77
    Juany8 says:

I love Jason Kidd on this team. Brings so much to the table…

How long before the “bench Amare” press starts up?

  81. 81
    BigBlueAL says:

The passing for the most part tonight by the Knicks has been phenomenal. They are shooting lights out but the majority of them have been wide open looks off great ball movement.

Refs are really trying to keep this close. Lots of ticky tack stuff.

  85. 85
    Gideon Zaga says:

Game starting to feel like 70′s and 90′s. Too many fouls and much physicality. Yes.

  86. 86
    Juany8 says:

Even playing 8 on 5, the Knicks just blew out the defending champs. Couldn’t ask for a better start to the season.

  87. 87
    Gideon Zaga says:

LeBron is beat up. There’s our Knicks.

  88. 88
    EB says:

JR Smith in the corner throwing his hands up as soon as Novak touches the ball. Novak is that good!

    Juany8 says:

    massive:
It looks like that 18-6 team from last year is for real. This is going to be a beautiful season.

Yes that team was real… and this team is a lot better. Try to get your mind around that possibility for a second

  90. 90
    d-mar says:

I would say this is a satisfactory start to the season

  91. 91
    Frank O. says:

The Heat has never really been in this game.
Our guards look really good. Novak’s release is quicker.
    Love Prigioni’s game.
Something is wrong. This game was too easy

  92. 92
    Unreason says:

Cigar is the only role I’m eager to see Sheed play.

  93. 93
    Thomas B. says:

James Harden is playing out of his mind…and body…possibly even his soul.

  94. 94
    Gideon Zaga says:

Im still sticking with 48 and 3rd seed. Remember AmareS as Magic Johnson said is not back haha Amar’es

    Juany8:
So it’s fair to say that 52 wins is very realistic for this team. The veteran pickups were freaking brilliant!

  95. 95
    Nick C. says:

I don’t know what kind of line he has but I’ve liked Brewer. Kidd, of course, is great. He made the Nets relevant and rootable ffs.

  96. 96
    Michael Cline says:

Odd to see ‘Sheed as the human victory cigar.

He didn’t look too thrilled to play that role, or am I reading into that face too much?

You have to wonder how long he will be satisfied with playing 5-8 minutes a night, especially considering this is with Amare out even.

  97. 97
    Frank O. says:

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shooter like Novak. Literally, the team celebrates before that shot has left his finger tips.

  98. 98
    Gideon Zaga says:

Van Gundy is right Rasheed Wallace is one of the rarest commodities in the NBA. Would be the perfect Centre next to Amar’e

  99. 99
    Frank says:

No arguing to be had here tomorrow. This is as good as it gets. And sure my boy Lin had 21/10/7 tonight but I think Ray Felton played great tonight. 14/3/9 with only 3 TOs against this team is a great performance.

Man Harden with 45 on 19 shots. Yowza.

  100. 100
    d-mar says:

Love 2 clips: Chandler coaching D like crazy from the bench and Woodson asking Sheed if he wants to play in garbage time. Nice.

  101. 101
    Gideon Zaga says:

Oh please Felton would have smoked ATL too, lets see him do it against the Heat.

  102. 102
    Frank O. says:

  104. 104
    massive says:

Juany8: Yes that team was real… and this team is a lot better. Try to get your mind around that possibility for a second

I know lol. The guys over at the Wages of Wins site have the Knicks being the #1 team in the Eastern Conference, and their numbers don’t account for Carmelo having a great season by their standards (they think he’ll have a WS/48 of .190, though). I can’t believe that we can actually have New York basketball in May.

  105. 105
    nyklyt12 says:

    That was impressive

  106. 106
    Juany8 says:

    Thoughts on the game:

Felton, Kidd, and Prignoini and light years better than our PG rotation last year, even when Lin was playing.

Brewer is going to do a fine job of filling in for Shumpert

Novak improved on offense and defense.

JR and Melo are playing very hard and passing often, but they are the only scorers on this team and need to make better decisions early in the clock. A long two late in the clock from them is fine, and this is Miami’s defense we’re talking about.

Our defense is a lot better than Boston’s this year. Everyone seems to ignore that when the Knicks go “small” they have Tyson Chandler gobbling up rebounds. Is Dirk really more of a PF than Melo? The Knicks are one of two teams with the speed to keep up with the Heat and the size to outrebound them (Bulls are the other, and I like Melo to score against Lebron more than Rose)

  107. 107
    Michael Cline says:

Regardless of what goes on from here, we can all be happy when we think back to this night. God it feels good to beat the tar out of the Heat. I love how physical this win was! They will remember this the next time we play and come with more energy, but we’ll be ready! We can only hope Rasheed knocks someone out! lol

  108. 108

Very very true, regular season record ‘somewhat’ irrelevant as long as all 15 bodies are healthy in May. Very impressive and composed performance.

  113. 113
    Juany8 says:

Lol Atlanta and Brooklyn are considered better teams than the Knicks. That is exceptionally funny after watching the Hawks play “defense” tonight

  114. 114

I don’t take early season hoops too seriously, but that was nice to see. totally happy to have Melo jacking up shots as much as he wants when he’s playing alongside Felton/Kidd/Brewer/Chandler, I still think the model for this team is the Iverson Sixers at their peak, hopefully with more offensive weapons but the same smothering D.

Miami didn’t look too interested, though, let’s be honest. Wade said beforehand they shouldn’t be playing, and they mostly looked like that. we’ll take it, though!

Heat didn’t really show up tonight but ill enjoy the win, when shump comes back and if amare comes off the bench and jr plays a little smarter holy fucking shit we in serious contention…loved the passing, sheed hitting the three, trying to post up, Melo hacking Lebron, Novak pumped up, Chandler smash! Finally after all the reading of blogs and nba2k13 I’m stoked we got to watch an actual game…shump shump motherfuckers!

You think the gift win to NY because of Hurricane Sandy?

  122. 122
    daJudge says:

Just to chime in—based on my recent posts, whatever I think or say, seriously consider the opposite. Wow, great game by our boys. I told my wife that I thought the game was either fixed or I was in a another strange universe. Either way, an unexpected good good night. I loved seeing the team boxing out, playing tough defense and executing. Is it possible that the Heat are becoming arrogant and complacent? That would be so cool I’m already getting cold.

  123. 123
    jon abbey says:

JC Knickfan: You think the gift win to NY because of Hurricane Sandy?

I wouldn’t go quite that far, but I do think it was a factor in both directions. I was going to make a bad joke about welcoming future hurricanes if it meant more Ws against Miami, but even I am not that tasteless. :)

  124. 124
    danvt says:

Woodson seems like he’s doing a great job. He really settled Melo and JR down when they took bad shots. He’s been preaching ball movement and it shows. Speaking of ball movement, I’m pinching myself that JKidd is on the team. Everyone says we’re old but the only old guy who played major minutes was Kidd and he only played 23.
Great defense. Heat only scored 84!

    jon abbey says:

    daJudge:
Is it possible that the Heat are becoming arrogant and complacent?

heh, come on, it’s 6-7 months until games that really matter for them, and also they methodically dismantled Boston who has been much more of a legitimate threat to them in the past.

this one had a bit of a tinge of feeling bad for your little brother because he’d been through a tough time and you know he’d never beat you when it mattered. again, though, I don’t really care, I’ll take the W thankfully.

Yeah, I agree completely. You can toss out stuff like “fluky” or “inspired by the tragedy,” but none of it matters when the win is as nice as this one was. What an awesome win. You know what win it reminded me of? That game in D’Antoni’s first year against Golden State when the Knicks scored 150 gajillion points. Only this time, it was against the defending champs on opening night after a freaking hurricane! What an incredible start to the season.

it will take a few months, when the Knicks are (knock-on-wood injuries) first in the Eastern Conference and pacing for around 60 wins, for many folks to credit them for a win tonight (as opposed to a Miami concession).

But very simple: Very good defense, low turnovers, play hard.

There’s enough talent offensively, enough diversity, to get it done. There will certainly be better nights on that end.

104 points against a top 3 defense you take every single time.

This is going to be fun.

The Knicks would have won shooting 33% from 3 tonight without getting to the line, either.

That is the power of low tunovers.

AGain folks, 11th last year in shooting efficiency despite the pg position shooting a collective .471TS, only better than the Bobcats and Wizards.

But far moe importantly, every single Knicks acquisition has a lower career % rate then the player he’s replacing.

turnovers were far and away the biggest weakness on last year’s team.

You don’t even have to improve shooting efficiency for this team togo into mid-50s win wins relative to last year’s roster.

They could score at the number 1 efficiency in the league from now on and it wouldn’t change the fact that having 1 good perimeter defender in this league isn’t enough to seriously bump up your defense. Even Dwight Howard hasn’t been able to prop up the Lakers lol, but at least he’s been out for months with an injury and could still be recovering physically. If he didn’t even ask for it then it is beyond bizarre! So they just abruptly decided that they were going to start calling him Melo Anthony, even (as Jon notes) on the scoreboard without even checking with Melo himself? That is so weird! During the player intros, my wife and I thought that the sound had shorted out for a second or something like that!

Obviously I feel terrible for amare but maybe this injury was the best thing that could happen to this team. As others have said here, it gives Woodson cover to move him to the 2nd unit where he wold play very well alongside either Kurt Thomas or Rasheed- both of whom can guard the more dangerous opposing PF/C and can hit a mid-long range jumper if left open. A second unit of Kidd/Prigioni, JR, Shumpert/Novak, amare, and Rasheed/Thomas would probably be the best second unit in the league.

I really don’t want to hear Wade bitch, btw. He was sitting in traffic when he tweeted. Well, that’s NYC even without the tropical storm. Thanks for the game check but still. Just go score some points. I’m sure LBJ was cynically trying to play into the “we didn’t try our hardest” narrative after the game as well. Gosh, I really don’t like those guys.

Meanwhile, we beat them and their healthy big three with only two of ours (and with one going 10-28)

One guy I really do still like is Jeremy Lin. He’s been overshadowed by Harden but has been very good. Ray had a great game and him and Jason Kidd will give us serviceable pg play but we will miss Lin, no doubt about it. Prigioni looked overmatched.

I’ve watched some of this game again, and I don’t think there’s any question the Heat didn’t really bring it like they should have last night. Some of it was our doing, and some was just pure effort.

Just watch Lebron on this Felton clip – have you ever seen him so lackadaisical on defense when actually trying?

    http://www.nba.com/video/games/knicks/2012/11/02/0021200020-mia-nyk-play1.nba/index.html

Even on the alley-oop dunk LBJ had, he was basically jogging down the court. It wouldn’t surprise me if he just mailed it in this game — not giving it up, just lot giving 150% like he usually does at MSG — to give NYers something to rally around.

I will say this though- our defense was really really good. Miami wasn’t sharp, and the stats for LBJ/Wade/Bosh weren’t bad, but like Harvey Araton said on twitter, those were a little misleading – they didn’t score in the ways they want to. I’ve also never seen Lebron challenged quite this much as the rim when he got there.

Other thing – Miami’s backup PG situation is a real problem for them. Chalmers went out with 2 fouls and Felton and then JR just went to work on Ray Allen. Cole is an ok defender but is a terrible offensive player. Chalmers’s ballhawking is a big part of their D (remember what he did to Lin last year, and then to Baron/Bibby etc. in the playoffs?) and without him their D definitely lost some bite. Also, it looks like Joel Anthony doesn’t play at all anymore? He was such a good PNR defender, and very good on the offensive boards at least in the games he played against us.

    Still a great win.

My impression of this win was that when the Knicks surged out to a 20 pt lead, e ahead wilted a bit. At the start of the second half they made runs, but the am nicks jUst pounded the, from three.
At some point, Wade and Lebron sort of decided not to play as hard.
But I believe if the Knicks had let up, Wade and Lebron would have stolen the game.
One thing is clear, the Knicks size and savvy gave the Heat trouble. This Knicks team will not get flustered.

  166. 166
    Juany8 says:

Let’s be clear here, the Knicks are certainly not this much better than the Heat. There is no way a fully motivated Heat team gets blown out by 20 like this. That being said, the Knicks beat the Heat much by much more than the scoreboard indicated. Lebron and Wade kept jacking up terrible shots that went in because they happen to be great players. Those shots have never gone in consistently for them, so for them to have good stats while not being able to get any easy shots is more a matter of luck than skill. Simply put, the Knicks played like a dominant team, and even a half hearted Heat team is still better than a team like the Pistons. The Knicks were consistently moving the ball, playing hard, physical defense, and playing off the ball well, even when Melo was posting up (especially Kidd, Brewer, and Chandler, 3 guys who clearly know how to be role players in ways Fields and TD never would) I don’t even think the 3′s were fools gold, pretty much all of them were wide open, in rhythm shots that you would want players to take. Hell Novak missed some easy ones.

I don’t think the Knicks are suddenly the best team in the league (and they’re not winning 60 games lol) but I do think they have a great chance of making the ECF, and unless the Lakers get their shit together, a healthy Knicks team (with Amar’e on the bench lol) has more matchup advantages against the Heat than any other team in the league. Doesn’t mean they’ll win, they’ll need Shumpert to come back better than he was last year to realistically have a chance of that (or maybe JR will get super hot for a series lol)
