2012-13 Game Thread: Knicks @ Pistons

With Melo out for tonight’s game, the Knicks are lucky that they’re playing the Detroit Pistons who are missing star rookie Andre Drummond and look lost. The Spurs just beat the Pistons by something like 154 points, so hopefully the Knicks will have an easy time tonight before they begin a tough stretch of games against Western Conference teams.

Mike Woodson likely feels that the Knicks are empowered by fan outrage, so he’s decided to start Kurt Thomas at the other forward spot instead of putting Amar’e into the starting lineup. Yes, the New York Knicks in 2013 are starting James White and Kurt Thomas at the two forward spots. Hilariously awesome (or awesomely hilarious? I can’t decide).

Let’s go Knicks!

I’m excited that they play without Melo for a while. Gotta get the reigns off Shump and say go ahead and huck it, kid. Even Flight White, have some fun, maybe even dunk in an actual game. But more importantly I think Felton and Chandler should be good with the P&R game. That’ll be the first option. Then 2nd will be Amar’e eviscerating the competition from the wing. Or maybe they’ll lose and we’ll be able to say, “well, no Melo..” Anyway, this team obviously has to calm down with the over rating of themselves and learn to be better. That’ll start with relying on Melo less.

  2. max fisher-cohen

This SL would be a disaster against a competent defense. White, Shumpert and Felton combine to make perhaps the worst shooting wing starters in the league.

  3. ephus

I know that Coach Woodson knows much more about basketball and the Knicks in specific than I ever will. But it is really hard to understand the reasoning behind putting a team with this little outside shooting on the court to start. If Kurt Thomas still was a capable shooter from 18′, this might work. But he just has not been hitting those shots.

I can’t imagine it being 38-29 at the end of the first quarter, because I don’t think these two teams combined are going to score 40 points in the first quarter. No O on either side.

  4. ephus

And that was the shot that Thomas has to take and make, not pass up for a pass to no one.

  5. Nick C.

Safe to say in this small sample Melo is not the sole reason for missed assignments on pick and rills, wide open jump shots or sloppy passing.

  6. lavor postell

I’m so surprised we have turned the ball over three times already and that Kurt Thomas’ corpse just got worked by Jonas Jerbeko

  7. ephus

Shumpert takes and makes a heat check. Please don’t let him think that is a shot to be repeated.

  8. Frank O.

Ray is pissing me off already.
How the hell is Amare to catch that rocket from so close?

  9. Will the Thrill

For someone who thrived off of pick and rolls his entire career, Amar’e literally looks like it is the first time he’s ever seen one, when he is defending.

  10. lavor postell

This offense is ridiculously pathetic. Felton needs to get the hook right now. We’d probably be better with James White on the floor over him at this point. Also do Felton and Chandler ever talk because they must get roasted on pick and roll more than any other pg/C combo in the league.

  11. Frank O.

    So,let me get this straight:
Woodson wants more offense off the bench.
So he’s fine leading off the game with slow starts on offense, so we can then run scorers out there?
Why not come guns blazing right out of the gate?
What purpose does starting empty shirts over your best players?

  12. nyklyt12

of knicks 21 losses they have lost the first quarter 16 times and tied it once. if woodson and co. know this why in the world would we start two guys who wouldn’t get any burn in the d-league, just for the sake of keeping the bench intact or whatever it is they are trying to do.

  13. Brian Cronin

Yes, I just don’t want him take 26 footers early in the shot clock.

Oh yeah, I was talking about the second three. The third three was a silly shot that luckily went in. The first two, though, were awesome.

I was wrong. Teams finally got over 40 points with 1 minute to go in the first quarter.

I can’t stand how Breen — and I guess he’s not alone in this — makes turnovers something like a moral failing. He loves that the team has a low turnover average, so at the beginning of the year, every game he would tell the story about the coaches doing laps. Thing is, now if they go over the average, it’s a black mark on the game, they’re misbehaving. Love he says, “The Knicks have twice as many turnovers as Detroit, yet the game is tied.” Hmm… so then maybe it’s not the be-all, end-all? The goal is to score more points.

It’s like free throws. The players are baaad boys when they don’t hit their free throws.

yea that 38-29 score was a bit over zealous on my part

Apropos of nothing, but Charlie Vilanueva is really ugly. Like almost Popeye Jones ugly.

Turnovers mean you are morally bankrupt and deserve to go to hell. They are indicative of a poor upbringing and correlate directly towards sociopathic tendencies. Also, you are likely to smell more.

But there’s a reason we aren’t comfortably blowing out the Pistons by 15 points. It’s because of sloppy turnovers.

I’ve muted Breen for a month now. Life is better.

  21. ephus

JR Smith actually beat everyone down the court in transition. And he did it without basket hanging. Nice for the Knicks to be on the positive end of one of those, for once.

  22. cc

re: turnovers, it’s a little like pitch counts in baseball coverage. No matter what the score is, the announcer frets when the starter’s pitch count gets high — which it always will. That number only goes up.

One reason Marv Albert is unbeatable is that I don’t think he puts this moral framework on the game.

  23. cgreene

I like Woodson’s rotation tonight. Maybe he gets confused when he has too many guys. (Except the whole start White and Thomas thing although I guess he bought 4 minutes of playing time for Stat.)

    +1

and yes, the Pistons do suck. But this is much better to me than the three yards and a cloud of dust we normally get.

  29. ephus

The ball getting stuck with the Rook late in the shot clock is not a good offensive plan.

You could make the argument that 15 turnovers is not more effective. You could also make the argument that STAT’s beasting is mostly a result of his off-the-ball movement and posting. But we’re winning by a healthy margin and it looks like we won’t need extended minutes from STAT or Chandler to in this.

  31. Owen

Although, to be fair to Melo, limiting turnovers is a major strength to his style of play. Just a personal aesthetic choice of mine….

That is one of the big things that Sports Vu does. It tracks how fast each player is moving, and can compare how long it takes do standard things, like getting around a pick. I know MSG is a Sports Vu venue, don’t know off the top of my ahead about Detroit.

When Sports Vu stats on effort start having a meaningful impact on salary, you will see a change. But never forget how grinding the 82 game schedule is. I am certain that I could not get out of bed feeling as beat up and sore as these guys wake up the morning after each game.

  33. DRed

Shump, anecdotally, seems really good at interior passing. If he could ever learn to score he could be a terrific pick and roll player.

Can we stop forcing lobs to Chandler when the angle isn’t there? Absolutely ridiculous how shitty Felton has been. Again he deserves to be benched to start the second half, but I can guarantee you that does not happen. I always thought Woodson was going to hold guys accountable

see, i understand is a long season and all that but at times it’s almost offensive to fans who pay to watch, when the effort level is as bad as it is at times. hopefully this technology isn’t as far off as it feels. i want to see march madness in the nba.

  38. JK47

The Knicks just scored 44 points in a half against a lousy defensive team and people are talking about how great the ball movement is? Give me a break with that shit. 44 points in a half against the Pistons is a joke, and I don’t care how many times the Knicks passed the ball before they put up a brick.

Maybe we’ll get more than 11 minutes out of Stat in the second half and actually hang on to win this thing.

  39. Seba

There’s a brutal stretch coming up, Woodson is probably trying to rest his best players.

  40. Seba

Also, we need someone else from the bench to step up if we’re going to make some noise come playoff time, might as well give these lineups some burn and see if there’s anything there.

  41. ephus

Sports Vu is here and now. The Knicks are getting these stats after each home game. But having the stats is not the same thing as using them to goose more effort out of the players.

You’re just not watching the game right. They’re better without Melo and his selfish selfishness. All of this florid, poetic ball movement is much better.

  49. BigBlueAL

So I just got home and figured Id read the game thread first before putting the game on. I read some comments talking about what great ball movement there is w/o Melo so I assumed the offense was playing great then I turn the game on and see they have 50 pts with 5 mins left in the 3rd and are down 9. What fucking game were they watching earlier????

  50. lavor postell

It’s obvious Melo has killed us with his selfish, inefficient shot chucking. Chandler really needs to be featured far more on offense. He has such great hands and a real feathery touch from the elbow.

Those last two possessions were nice examples of ball movement. Of course if the shot is a brick it’s a moot point.

Shot very well early. Up by 15. Have just sucked in the 3rd. Jr 5-16

  54. ephus

Great defense by Kidd denying Knight the open 3. Then Chandler with the nice close out on the shot.

  55. lavor postell

Does everybody on the team feel that only JR Smith is capable of taking horrible shots with the clock expiring? Felton’s on fire, no idea why you don’t just run another pick and roll with him. They have had no solutions for that all night except depending on the Knicks to make the wrong pass/decision.

  56. maxwell_3g

i have no idea about this team anymore- what we know…
    1) we absolutely depend on felton’s ability to penetrate- and he is about the 20th best pg in the league (at best)
    2) we absolutely depend on JR smith being a playmaker for us- and he prefers to shoot fadeaway long 2’s year after year, pissing off coach after coach in the process
    3) we rely big time on J Kidd- and he is 40
    4) we have a legit offensive weapon in amare- but if hes out there without tyson, all hell breaks loose
    5) we have a star in Melo- but no one really trusts him to perform on the big stage, including me
    6) we supposedly got a bunch of vets to sign and go for a championship- and kurt thomas and james white end up as starters

  57. Frank O.

Unless foul trouble forces Woodson’s hand, I don’t think that we are going to see Shumpert again tonight. The brain dead offense and inability to guard the backdoor cuts on defense were just too much. And that has nothing to do with rust or getting the knee back in shape.

Mind boggling that there are full possession where STAT doesn’t touch the ball

The man is so tired he can’t even jog up the floor after a defensive rebound. Both teams are huffing and puffing right now. Hate to say it, but STAT can’t play anymore minutes if OKC is coming to our home tomorrow. His better defense/offense tonight is coming at a clear cost to his stamina, which is natural. I don’t know why he’s still in there and Chandler isn’t?

For a moment, let’s pretend Melo doesn’t have the second highest +/- on team this year.

Last season the Knicks went 7-1 during Linsanity with Melo out, winning four games at home, and three on the road.

I hope everyone is noticing that Amare isn’t just putting up points these days, but he’s playing pretty solid defense as well. Yes, he gets burned a lot on pick and rolls, but so does the entire team. I think it’s time to put “Amare plays no defense” to bed, it just is not true these days.

man, that was ugly. more offensive fireworks from Chandler, it’s ridiculous that he doesn’t get charged with more turnovers with his alligator arms missing entry pass after entry pass when he can’t jump to get them. it’s not always the fault of the guy making the entry pass, but it sure seems to be recorded that way.

tomorrow is going to be even uglier, as are the next few weeks, but somehow Woodson finished his first 82 (regular season) games tonight and is 55-27. I have issues with him at times, but credit for dragging this bunch of misfits to such a strong record.

man, that was ugly. more offensive fireworks from Chandler, it’s ridiculous that he doesn’t get charged with more turnovers with his alligator arms missing entry pass after entry pass when he can’t jump to get them. it’s not always the fault of the guy making the entry pass, but it sure seems to be recorded that way.

tomorrow is going to be even uglier, as are the next few weeks, but somehow Woodson finished his first 82 (regular season) games tonight and is 55-27. I have issues with him at times, but credit for dragging this bunch of misfits to such a strong record.

    36-29, was it?

Good to get some Spurs watching in. Loving what Manu is doing tonight. Less and less of it these days.

The ESPN crew posed a very good question. How the hell are the Spurs so successful. That is a subject for serious discussion. How they manage to find the Green/Splitter/Leonard/Mills’ of this world and slot them in so seamlessly is pretty amazing….

I think its more a credit to the bunch of misfits for carrying Woodson to his record.

clearly overly pessimistic, but it’s not like they couldn’t have easily lost all of the last four games, and they still could easily lose all of the next seven. they haven’t had a win over a genuinely good team in months, and even in the last four wins, the opposing teams were all missing key guys (Lee, Nene, Waiters, Monroe). things are about to get real ugly, but it’s nice to have a cushion going into that at least.

If we can grab wins on Saturday against Utah at home and at Golden State on Monday that would be huge. Without Melo I’d expect us to lose tomorrow and to be fair we’re still underdogs with him. I am very interested to see Ibaka defending Amar’e on the block.

The only reason the spurs are still successful and probably will continue to be successful is due to two things. 1- a good front office that understand the pieces a team needs while making sound financial decisions 2- a good coach that has a system his players believe in. If Woodson saids he holds players “Accountable” (in reality berates lol) then what does pop have ? They are def. a well oiled machine.

The only reason I am not looking forward to Tom. Game isn’t because of westbrick or KD. But the fact that the OKC is very dynamic and athletic.

If we play good team defense, and deny KD as many opportunity’s as we can. We have a good shot of winning. Westbrook can turn into westbrick rather quickly.
