If the Knicks win the same day as the Lakers and Spurs lose, I think Congress needs to declare the anniversary a national holiday.

  2. ww007

WTF!!! Anyone else getting women’s softball going into extra innings on ESPN??? This better not cut into the Knicks-Celtics game!!!

    The game’s on TNT!

Oh snap! Thanks for the heads up! I probably would’ve ended
up watching 20 of that crap before switching! Haha

  5. danvt

My prediction is that the Celtics create some space in the third quarter (hopefully not the 2nd) and take this one. I don’t see how the Knicks can stay with this team for a whole game. I like the Anthony trade and I think we now have two starters on what could eventually be a very good playoff team, however, for this year, the deal created too many holes in our roster. I hope with all my heart to be wrong. Maybe if Landry Fields steps up and becomes a more consistent threat. Douglas cannot afford an off game. Other glimpses of hope for me are that we really haven’t seen a complete effort by our big three yet (Did chauncey play in the win over MIA?).

Maybe it’s competitive, but maybe it’s a Celtic sweep. Oh lord, please let NYK represent this time. I’ve been good, more or less.

  6. latke

There are only two Boston players that really matter on offense: Pierce and Rondo. Allen, Garnett, Glen Davis/Krstic all are off the ball and/or average players. Pierce and Rondo are the creators and devastators. If we can keep Rondo out of the and control Pierce without having to double team, we should have a chance to steal it. When your defense has to adjust to control those two, that’s when Garnett and Allen start getting clean looks and kill you.

  7. ephus

I hope we will not see Carmelo until 2nd Quarter. Any sooner than then means that things have gone badly and MDA has to risk Carmelo getting his third to stabilize things.

  8. jviana

Hey guys. Im new to NBA leaguepass and it looks like playoff games arent offered! Anyone know where to stream it?

  9. ephus

Second 24 second violation for Celtics in the first five minutes. Steve Kerr just called it “impressive defense” by the Knicks. Celtics are not showing much energy on offense.

  10. TheRant

I’ll comment — but was kind of waiting for a few minutes to go by.

So many playoff games the underdog comes out guns blazing (Portland, Philly, Pacers) and it takes a bit of time to see things settle down.

Only then do you realize who really has the juice to push it through (like Atlanta or CP3).

  11. latke

where is the pick and roll that propelled us through most of our first two games vs. Boston? You turn Amare into Glen Davis when you use him off isos and spot ups.

  12. BigBlueAL

Defense been very good so far, but offense has been horrible. Amar’e not getting any touches which is inexcusable considering Melo hasnt played basically.

  13. KnickInSeattle

Yeah, rhythm of the offense a bit off, but Walker is bringing it, and Melo will be back in the 2nd.

  14. ephus

Seems like there is no energy in the Boston crowd. The only times they got loud were (1) Rondo’s transition lay-up and (2) Pierce’s three pointer.

  15. cgreene

Bill Walker saved this quarter. We could have really struggled wo Melo and lost momentum.

  16. ephus

Krisic got mugged rolling to the rim. Knicks were lucky that Stat did not pick up another foul.

  17. ephus

Down 1 after 1, with Melo playing next to no time. Can’t be upset about that.

Jeffries has been effective on the defensive end. Garnett has been silent, and Pierce has been quiet. Don’t remember Ray Allen putting up a shot.

  18. latke

    KnickInSeattle:
I’d give my money to see Pierce break a femur.

Yes, I’d like for the knicks to just give everyone a shot at guarding pierce: Brown, Jeffries, Melo, Shawne Williams. I’m telling ya’ll, he is absolutely critical to their offense. I also think double teaming Garnett when Jeffries or Turiaf on him is unnecessary. Garnett is mostly a spot up shooter/superstar defender at this point. Unless you are going with all your offensive players, there’s just no need.

  19. Michael Cline

How does Tony not get a call on that circus layup with tons of contact, and then Williams gets rung up for that charge? BOTH WAYS REF!

  20. Michael Cline

I really think Douglas is the key to this series. His D on Rondo and his scoring will be the difference. If we get his best, we win the series. If we get subpar, we lose

  21. ephus

Thought Shawne drew the offensive there. Ray Allen penetrating? Why was Carter picking up Allen 3/4 court and getting dusted at the mid-court line?

  22. ephus

MDA going against type. Instead of a short rotation, he has gone 10 deep. Of course, two quick Melo fouls will help with that.

  23. ephus

Get ready for an onslaught of Pierce taking it to the rim. Nothing else is working for the Celtics.

  24. Michael Cline

You have to be kidding me!!!! Then Pierce comes down and they call that? Spree, where you at? You have to be screaming your lungs out!

  25. David Crockett

    Michael Cline:
I really think Douglas is the key to this series. His D on Rondo and his scoring will be the difference. If we get his best, we win the series. If we get subpar, we lose

I might amend it to say that Rondo is the key. If he doesn’t play well it means that Ray Allen won’t play well, almost by definition.

  26. ephus

Anthony was open on that three because the Celtics were rotating to Turiaf rolling to the rim. Even though Melo missed, it was a good play — hopefully to be repeated.

  27. ephus

How about a defensive rebound? Two long rebounds to the Celtics, but then they pick up a steal. Stat hits from the top of the key, and the Knicks are up by 8.

  28. iserp

And very nice ball movement, Anthony is working from the flow of the offense. Still, i would like to see more P&R with Amare.

  29. latke

wow… I mean I expect a big push from the celtics, but we are really d-ing up, and now with the offense getting a bit unclogged…

  30. Nick C.

Like the result but hate that throw up a shot to draw the foul by Billups. Up 12 at the half so that’s a pretty petty quibble. Keep it up Knicks!”!

  31. Doug

    Mike R:
haha big baby getting the chair pulled out

I’ve never seen anyone fall right on his ass after getting the chair pulled on them.

  32. latke

BTW, Roger Mason on the playoff roster over Derrick Brown? That seems a pretty questionable choice.

  33. ww007

Wow Knicks CAN play D when it matters lol.

Let’s hope they can keep this up for another half

  34. The Honorable Cock Jowles

Barkley won’t admit he’s wrong when he’s wrong, which is often. That’s why he would have made a great politician. Great in the sense of “wins re-election,” not in the sense of “serves American public.”

  35. Z

    I don’t think we’ve held a team under 40 in a first half all year…

    Maybe Spree is right?!?

  36. BigBlueAL

    latke:
BTW, Roger Mason on the playoff roster over Derrick Brown? That seems a pretty questionable choice.

There is no playoff roster like old times. Every game you name your 12 active players just like in the regular season.

  37. Frank O.

Okay. Knicks up by 12 at the half. Amare and Melo playing inspired ball. Knicks defense is stout.
And TNT halftime reporter does a four minute segment on how great Rondo is and how flawed the Knicks approach is…and the knicks are winning by 12.
Please. If someone told me that Rondo would take 10 shots at the half, I’d say thank you. That means great shooters like allen aren’t shooting.
    All day.
    TNT hates the Knicks.

  38. BigBlueAL

    Wait, what did Spree say?

  40. The Honorable Cock Jowles

Don’t get all hyped up, everyone: still 24 minutes to go.

And then three to six games afterward.

  41. ww007

Yeah I agree, TNT hasn’t even analyzed the first half! Just showing shit about not guarding Rondo properly (obviously wrong) and highlights from the Lakers game!

And Barkely hasn’t said jack. I think he hates the Knicks cuz he took one too many elbows from the Oak man back in the day.

  42. jon abbey

Bill Walker in the emergency Melo role holding his own against Pierce for a quarter, I did not see that coming.

also I did not think Chris Paul was really still capable of games like that, so apologies to him for my doubting him. it will be interesting to see how many more of those he has in him, though, especially because I’d guess Kobe will start to guard him a bit more. I couldn’t have been the only one watching that and imagining him with Melo and Amare, right?

we probably have to win two games in Boston to win this series, so at this point this one’s a must-win, I’d say. we cannot afford an Indiana-like collapse, but our boys have me believing right now.

  43. Mike R

so when do the celtics get called for delay of game?every chance they get the knock the ball away or something like that after a made basket

  44. Frank O.

Is Kerr wearing a Boston jersey.
    Another Knicks hater.
TNT, the She-man Knicks Hater club.

  45. cgreene

Kerr has absolutely been anti-Knicks all season defending his decisions not to sign MDA and Amare.

  46. latke

Carmelo does iso, whines when he clearly just got blocked, doesn’t enter the frame on defense until after the celts have made 3 passes and then laid it in.

  47. Frank O.

Every time Rondo shoots and angel gets his wings…

And Kerr just said the Celtics are making a run, after hitting deuce.
I’m about to hit my beautiful flatscreen TV

  48. rohank

Well you knew Boston was going to make a run here. Let’s see if we can weather it and respond. :)

  49. rooster_douglas

Big 3 by extra E. Looks like we’ll be going into the 4th with a lead (knock on wood)…. Not sure if anyone else is having this problem but Billy “Sky” Walker is quickly becoming my favorite knick now that the rooster is gone.

  50. Doug

What’s that Clyde always says about how it takes twice as much energy to play from behind? Let’s hope the aphorism holds for the Celtics.

  51. latke

feel very lucky to be still up 5 in this game. Boston is not playing well. Knicks are D-ing, but Boston is missing makeable shots and taking bad shots. Carmelo has also really gone back to hero mode. He’s playing slow, making the game into him vs. Boston.

  52. cgreene

Seeing how awful Melo was we aren’t in too bad shape. He is going to need to make some shots for us to win.

  53. Frank O.

This is it. This is where the Celts have always raised the intensity a notch and the Knicks shrink.
Melo needs to snap out of it. and STAT.
Billups also has not played great yet.

  54. TheXman

u know, to think the knicks are only down 2 early in the 4th i would’ve taken it, at least not yet a blowout

  55. latke

taking bad shots early in the clock and late in the clock. No ball movement/player movement. You would think they’d remember doing this last time we played boston. I guess bad habits come out when you get pressured. So far, the defense has not completely collapsed, but the offense looks incompetent.

  56. cgreene

I mean the 10 man rotation was great in the 1st half w Melo in foul trouble. But there is just way too much Anthony Carter, Jared Jeffries. We need to play Billups, Landry/TD, Melo, Stat, Rony the rest of the game.

    Has Rondo even sat out?

  57. rooster_douglas

Agreed. Playoff time. Stat Chauncey and Melo have all already had 10+ min of rest. We gotta play the starters for the rest of the game…. and maybe Billy and Toney

  58. Frank O.

    Amare dominating.
Looking like a man among boys again in the playoffs.
That dunk on KG was sick

  59. latke

man, neither team this whole quarter has been able to get any sort of run. Jermaine O’Neal has just been huge. If we can foul him out in the next minute or so, we should win.

  60. TheXman

turiaf, 5/5, 5 blocks love it, need to finish strong, melo’s gotta be due for something

  61. latke

    Frank O.:
    Amare dominating.

That dunk on KG was sick

Yeah that may have been the most impressive knick dunk I’ve seen in like ten or fifteen years.

  62. DReDD

props to rondo on the perfect pass. whichever way this goes (go NY!) this has been a hell of a game

  63. TheXman

YES GO GLAD WE TRAADED FOR MELO! knew he was going to turn it over, i seriously knew it, now paul pierce for the game winner, good game

  64. Nick C.

How the hell did that happen. Can only say nice play out if the TO by Rivers….and WTF with that foul call

  65. Doug

    TheXman:
YES GO GLAD WE TRAADED FOR MELO! knew he was going to turn it over, i seriously knew it, now paul pierce for the game winner, good game

    What is your deal?

    Oh please

  67. Caleb

    In no particular order…

    So much for superstar treatment.

Why is Anthony Carter coming in instead of Landry Fields?

Nice to see Amare ready to go.

Looks like Billups is out for the duration which is pretty grim news.

  68. The Honorable Cock Jowles

Great shot by Carmelo at the end. Don’t even attempt to drive. Just jack up the long, contested 3.

  69. Frank O.

    Execution.
Not sure why Melo heaved that 3 from so far.
He was cold. should have attacked the rim and tried for an old school 3

  70. cgreene

That foul call just ruined the whole game. I mean it was just such garbage. I can’t believe it.

  71. TheXman

why did we go away from amare in the late stages when he was dominating? not sure at all, he didn’t touch the ball at all in the last 2 minutes. now i can torture myself to watch the knuggets afterwards.

  72. Frank O.

I think that shit-call foul against Melo was a home team gift.
Should never have called that foul.
Gift-wrapped the game for the Celts. Stole Knicks momentum at the end.

  73. rooster_douglas

I can not believe MDA played AC instead of Fields Jeffries or Walker when Billups got hurt. C’s paid absolutely no attention to him, doubled off of him. offense got stagnant, led to Melo’s TO. I don’t have any real problems with the last 20 seconds though. Allen made a big shot, Melo didnt, what are you gonna do.

  74. TheXman

I enjoy melo wiping the efforts of turiaf and amare. The foul on pierce’s 3, the strip by pierce, then the offensive foul, then the in and out 3 pointer, then the heave at the end. Looking forward for the rest of the series.

  75. Shad0wF0x

Goddamnit. Now I gotta watch Thunder vs Nuggets with Barkley and McHale gloating over this.

  76. Count de Pennies

Well, at least the Melo-bashers have a lot to smile about until Tuesday.

The rest of us? Not so much.

  77. jaylamerique

Doug: yeah TD hitting the floor like a stack of bricks left Allen wide open.

that looked like an illegal screen

  78. TheXman

Doug: re at all, he didn’t touch the ball at all in the last 2 minutes. now i can torture myself to watch the knuggets afterwards.

Melo plays bad when he’s mad anyways. We won’t have billups either. Celtics seriously just own the Knicks again and again int he 4th quarter. It is getting in their heads, that they can’t win it down the stretch.

  79. Frank

GO back and watch the tape. Boston’s last two “great” plays were the result of 1st – a shoving moving screen on Ray Allen on Turiaf which freed Garnett up for the alley-oop (wasn’t THAT horrible), but then the super obvious ridiculous blatant moving screen on Garnett repaying the favor to Allen.

I don’t usually believe in referee home team bias, but this was really ridiculous.

  80. David Crockett

exactly what i thought. no screen is that good where the guy falls down.

  82. Count de Pennies

I gotta say… seeing the entire OKC crowd decked out in blue is creeping me out a bit.

It’s kinda the NBA equivalent of a Mary Kay sales meeting.

  83. BigBlueAL

Problem was Garnett was overplaying Amar’e and forcing him to the 3pt line to try to receive the pass the final couple of minutes.

  84. latke

we played better with Douglas; Billups had a pretty terrible game — 3/11. The way to beat boston is to run. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Billups injury is a blessing in disguise. The game came down to Carmelo just playing like a chump.

  85. ww007

Yeah Melo played a terrible 2nd half. I think it all went downhill after he chucked up that 30 footer. He took a few contested shots way early in the shotclock too after the Knicks got the offensive rebound.

With that being said I feel like the refs wanted the Celtics to win. That foul on Pierce’s 3 was questionable, as was the offensive foul on Melo. I’m surprised they didn’t call that bump on Pierce on that last possession, I figured they were gonna call a foul on the Knicks if any of the Celtics took it to the rack.

Actually if you think about it, kind of a strange decision by Doc calling for a 3 there down by 1. If Allen had missed it (of course he wasn’t, but still), people would be questioning Doc’s playcalling. Also I dunno how TD fell down.

Anyway let’s hope the Knicks bounce back (Melo especially) and have a good game 2 and learn from their mistakes. At least we we’re getting closer to beating them each game.

  86. BigBlueAL

Also I know Melo will get alot of crap for his game and rightfully so but in the 4th quarter he had 3 huge assists and wasnt forcing stuff. Cant really fault the last shot, if he drives no chance in hell he gets a foul call so just go for a 3pter from his favorite spot for the win.

  87. outoftowner

Celtics execution at the end of close games is impeccable. This game was just like the one at MSG in December where the Knicks led the whole way and they snuck in at the end and won it. Plus, Doc Rivers is outstanding at drawing up plays out of timeouts.

On the other end, we saw all of the worst of Carmelo Anthony in the second half. Bad shots, got burned a couple times by Pierce, didn’t rebound, missed his usual gamewinner. We’ll learn a lot about his character by how he plays in game 2.

  88. TheXman

ww007: people hate boston, I hope they all break their ankles.

Closer don’t mean shit, we really get owned in the 4th by the Celtics. But I mean it’s the Celtics, look at the experience on that team. On the bright side, we hung in there against their run, was even up 82-78, looking good except that huge offensive foul on Amare when TD had an open 3. We need landry back.

  89. Frank

Also I dunno how TD fell down.

LOL. When a huge 7′ dude shoves you into the ground illegally, that’s why you fall down.

I wonder whether Boston knew that there was no way in hell that a moving screen violation gets called there when they’re at home. They really had two blatantly moving screens responsible for their last 5 points. They were so blatant they almost had to have been planned.

  90. d-mar

Wow just saw a replay of Allen’s shot during Doc’s press conference. That screen by KG wasn’t even close, wasn’t like he stuck his hip out, he just threw his body at Douglas and sent him flying. If you’re gonna call that BS on Melo, then you have to call a blatant illegal screen on KG.

  91. rohank

I am physically in pain after that game. So many wasted efforts. Any reason to believe amare, turiaf, and Jeffries (who also had a great game defensively) can step up consistently?

  92. John Kenney

Devastating. Can Melo rebound and give us a good performance in game 2? What’s Chaunceys status? Good or bad if he’s out? We need to take game 2. We need it.

  93. cgreene

I don’t understand why it’s MDA’s default position that Melo gets the balls at end of games and not Amare. I hate it.

  94. Doug

    Count de Pennies:

  95. Owen

That was brutal. Give Allen credit for that shot but I think the refs gave the Celtics a huge assist. Bitter taste in my mouth…

  96. outoftowner

If you guys want a silver lining this is it: the Knicks proved tonight that they can defend the Celtics. C’s didn’t reach 30 points in any of the quarters. Knicks defense isn’t going to be the complete disaster people were expecting it to be.

Other silver lining: Amare is back.

  97. art vandelay

no, we had no timeout, unfortunately…knowing d’antoni he wouldn[t have used it anyway.

That seems to be what everyone is saying I’ll have to heck the replays on those, but I don’t doubt it. I hope the Knicks coaching staff shows the game film to the league and go WTF. Not like it’s gonna mean anything. The refs really are the Celtic’s 6th man. You need another team who the refs repect to really have a chance, like the Lakers.

And then you get crap like Robert Horry and PJ Brown getting half the other team’s players ejected. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother watching NBA basketball. It’s ridiculous.

  99. d-mar

D’Antoni never questions ref calls, but brought up off. foul on Melo and KG illegal screen in press conference.

  100. TheXman

btw i thought it was kinda funny, how not much credit was given to the Knicks’ D. Kenny Smith went on some ballyhoo dance on how they needed to guard Rondo tighter. Hope Turiaf can stay healthy throughout, he’s been great in the PnR.

  101. adrenaline98

That was the BIGGEST HORSESHIT GAME being ref’ed I HAVE EVER SEEN. EVER. Been watching for 22 years and I didn’t feel like I got jobbed nearly as badly as tonight.

Physical game ALL game. Billups took massive contact, went down, no call.

Melo called for offensive foul for a push-off.

KG trips WWTDD, BLATANTLY, NO CALL.

Celtics play 6 on 5, when the assistant coach runs on the floor, during LIVE GAMEPLAY. NO CALL.

They intentionally foul Melo, during his last shot, NO CALL.

How do you ‘intentionally’ foul someone, and the ref says “you know what, that’s a terrible strategy, despite it being INTENTIONAL, SO NO CALL. I DETERMINE YOUR STRATEGY.”

Fucking MORONS all over the place tonight. Never been so steamed at the refs before.

  102. dsulz

TheXman: not much credit was given to the Knicks’ D.

We did play really good D. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get a defensive rebound to save our lives. But the difference was really Melo. Dude just went straight cold in the second half. I hope it lights a fire under his ass for Game 2. If you’re an NBA superstar, you can have a second half like that and not be ready to kill the next game you play.

My sense though, is that after this game–which we really had and let go of–I won’t be surprised if we get swept. That was a devastating loss, especially given that we lost to the Celts almost the exact same way in the regular season. But it really comes down to what kind of player Melo is. If he isn’t ice cold the second half, we win this game. If you’re a Melo fan, that’s comforting. If you’re a hater, then it’s confirmation that we’ve built a house on sand. I continuously go back and forth. But at this point the destiny of our team seems clear: we live and die with Melo.

  103. rohank

That’s actually something I didn’t realize. Boston was trying to use that “foul to give” on melo on the final shot. Maybe melo was trying to turn that into free throws?

  104. The Honorable Cock Jowles

Don’t get mad at me, because I’m telling you what’s real: one plus one is two, all day long, and it’s never gonna change. And that’s factorial.

We should really be handed the next game, as much as possible by the refs, as a makeup, and keep this series even.

See, snarky shit like this make people mad at you. And that’s factorial.

I really hate to focus on the refs, but they just showed that off. foul again on Melo during his press conference. 21 seconds left, 25 ft. from the basket a guy swings his arm and pushes another guy’s arm away, and the refs take the ball out of the Knicks’ hands. Really one of the worst off the ball calls I’ve ever seen

On lighter note, it was really great to watch the Knicks in an NBA playoff game and feel like they had a chance. It really hasn’t happened since 2000-01 season, an entire decade ago. I’m 28 now. I was still in high school the last time I felt this way. The only thing I miss is the old NBA on NBC theme music. Man, that shit was the epic. I really wish ABC and/or ESPN would bring it back.

Pretty bummed, not much to say. It would be really nice to just have one game against Boston where we win or lose without feeling fucked over.

Here’s what I would write on the blackboard before game two: Nice defense last game. Now remember, easy shots are easier than hard shots.

It’s like I’ve walked into Christopher Moltisanti’s deathbed dream from the Sopranos. I’m playing a game of craps and the Irish keep rolling sevens. This is hell.

So what’s Chauncy’s deal? He out for Game 2? The whole series? Dunno how much it matters, but definitely affects Knicks approach the game.

I am shocked, SHOCKED, that Barkley just said the offensive foul call on Melo was a good call.

  115. Tyler Murray

I was at the game, and it was crazy. I was doing my best to just enjoy the moment, but with the 12 point lead at halftime, STAT dominating in the 4th, and Toney’s huge stepback three, it was impossible not to get excited about a potential Knick win.

I thought the refs did a solid job letting both teams play UNTIL the call on Melo. There was a ton of contact on a lot of drives on both sides, but not many whistles (I only counted one And-1 in the entire game).

That made the last call on Melo really tough to swallow. He was off in the 4th, but he wasn’t even given a chance to close the game for NY. I swear that play happened 10 times during the game, and wasn’t called once.

Still, very encouraging game from the Knicks. They completely outplayed the Celtics at certain points in the game, and they were fantastic on defense for the most part (39 points allowed by halftime).

So Boston won the 1st game at home. So what? GO KNICKS. Feels good to care this much in mid-April!

    Jake S.:
Please. Charles Barkley is a total jerk. You’re surprised by this?

I think BBA was being sarcastic, but yeah – Barkley is such a hater. Knicks finally played great defense tonight too – no props from him or anyone else about that?

  117. The Honorable Cock Jowles

Just play Toney 48 minutes next game. So long as Anthony Carter, Relic of a Long-Since-Past Age, doesn’t see the floor, I’ll be happy.

This game is an indicator that the Knicks can win the series. So long as Carmelo and the refs don’t conspire to single-handedly blow the game in the last sixty seconds again.

  118. GHenman

We looked like the better team tonight despite ‘Melo being off. Refs really stole it at the end.

  119. Robert Silverman

What about the non-call on Billups drive in which he got whacked in the head and subsequently injured.

This may have been the worst-officiated playoff game this side of the Kings-Lakers game 7 in 2002

  120. Jake S.

Shouldn’t the league be angling for a Knicks-Heat series? Wouldn’t those ratings be off the charts?

I don’t buy MDA’s excuse about not giving the ball to Amar’e b/c KG was defending him too far out. When KG started overplaying Amar’e, Amar’e either shot over him (rather effectively) or blew by him (even more effectively).

I don’t have the stats handy, but isn’t Amar’e a better 4Q scorer than Melo? I’m a little annoyed that Melo keeps going Kobe on us down the stretch, particularly when he’s having a terrible game and his teammate is on fire.

Also, Landry Fields was effective on Ray Allen. Toney Douglas was not.

I don’t think I’ve yelled more at the TV to put in Fields in the 4th on Ray Allen than anything else. TD hit that big 3, but also gave a lot of points to Allen.
