another big test tonight, a lot to ask from Melo/Amare after each played big minutes last night. go NY, go NY, go!

    d-mar says:

It’s a whole lot to ask for the Knicks to win this one, although the Mavs did play last night also. I would say if we do manage to pull this one out, it would be our most significant victory this season.

    Frank O. says:

Lately, I can’t wait for these games to get started. Hate when they move west…later games…
I think D’Antoni teams are some of the most fit in the league.
I think the Knicks have a good record on the back end of the back to back games.

    Brian Cronin says:

Mavs lost a close one and then their coach called them soft. They are going to be pumped to play tonight.

Interestingly, the Knicks kicked their asses in Dallas last year.

I’m setup for a full night of NBA…Lakers and Cryami, Knicks and Mavs, Knuggets and Suns.

    Go NY Go!

  6. 6
    Brian Cronin says:

Bumping the game to 8:30 pm, Dallas-time, is a pain in the ass. This wait will be excruciating.

  7. 7
    hoolahoop says:

I wish Dallas wasn’t coming off a game last night. This game will be good test for the knicks, and decided by who will be able to maintain intensity. I think the knicks let up a little late in the game last night while Memphis just kept coming. If the Knicks can learn to keep their intensity throughout the game, and from game to game, they can beat anybody. Winning this game against the Mavs would be a statement.

  8. 8
    Brian Cronin says:

Is Gallo back tonight for the Nuggets?

Same here. Got a couple of cold ones ready. Can’t wait to see Miami have another breakdown and the Knicks kick some ass.

    Brian Cronin says:

MSG just had a replay of the Knicks/Heat game with the LJ/Mourning fight. Man, looking back at it now, it just seems so childish and pathetic. At the time, I was totally into it. You know, sort of like, “screw you, Miami!” but now it just looks so sad.

It was interesting to see Chris Childs literally drag Jeff Van Gundy out from under the fracas.

Hey, give those fans a break, they’ll be in their seats by halftime!

So what’s going on with the home darks anyway? Are we moving to an NFL format, where the home teams pick the jersey color?

It’s just the non-white throwbacks/”Noche Latino” unis being used by the home team. I’m personally geeking over the re-design/ditching the black for next season

    villainx says:

Just thinking how dumb it was that Miami went after Bosh, or put him on the same level as Wade and LeBron. Not saying Bosh ain’t a good player, but his elevation in status is so unnecessary.

At the same time, boy, I am so glad we have Amare. Not sure how serious the Knicks were in going after Bosh, but can’t imagine Bosh being nearly as dynamic of a player or leader as Amare.

  20. 20
    DReDD says:

Other than the Lakers, alternate unis/throwbacks tend to be dark, and those are made to be bought by the fans and usually most of them are home. The “Noche Latina” ones, like tonight, I have no idea how they decide that one.

Of the “Noche Latina” sets I’ve seen, the only one that makes sense is the “Nueva York”. Adding Los\El in front of a team name does NOT make it spanish.

It’s been a long time coming.

Speaking of uniforms, I stumbled across this today: http://bit.ly/if5hLO

I know the NBA has had its fair share if hideous unis, but this has to be the worst ever, right?

Yes, the early Raptors were powerful-ugly. But the cartoon dinosaur almost pushes it to “so awful it’s good” category. I shudder more at these…

Best miami rip of the month — and you’ve got a lot of competition

Big test. I agree that a win tonight would be the biggest win of the season.

    daJudge says:

Really looking forward to tonight’s game. Bummed about my Johnies, but put on some MSG recorded Allman Bros. at the Beacon. It gave me a big lift. I don’t mean to shift topics, but the Brothers and the Knicks are such a great combination for me. It really brings me back to high school, circa 1972-74. If any of you’all are fans of Country music or Southern Rock, they’re a real treat. They just played the beautiful masterpiece Melissa. Anyway, let’s rock tonight, Go Knicks, statement game either way.

    Jim Cavan says:

Yeah those are really bad. I don’t know what’s more annoying though: the off-centered-ness of the Kings jerseys, or the completely unnecessary silver skid marks / lightning bolts running down the old Raptors unis.

Anyone see Mike Lupica’s article today? “I have said this before: As great as LeBron is, he might be a smaller version of Wilt Chamberlain. And might not even win the two NBA titles that Wilt did, even across all the years when he was the greatest basketball talent in the world.”

I thought I remember reading right after the Melo acquisition (perhaps in Newsday) that the Knicks had contemplated changing the uni designed but decided to scrap the change and maintain the current look after all….among other reasons that jerseys currently bought in the melo frenzy wouldn’t be somewhat old/obsolete by next year…I think I read that the reason there was such a dearth in melo jerseys was because the next had delayed in making their decision to keep the current unis, at least for next season…anyone else read this? I am not so certain there really will be a change upcoming.

Refreshingly optimistic take. Perhaps overly so, but I do think he’s right in saying that Stat and Melo’s skill sets are more complimentary than Wade and LeBron’s. Or at least less alike.

All my uni-news came from this Uniwatch article — http://www.uniwatchblog.com/2011/02/01/tampa-bay-lightning-unveil-new-uniforms/

I didn’t see anything about scrapping the change – but I’d be really saddened if it was so. One would think the Melo trade would actually motivate the change — everyone who bought one this month would certainly shill out $100 to buy the new one

when you add Melo’s foul trouble and Amare’s injury, and Billups out, it’s a miracle we’re only 9 behind.

With Melo’s 2 fouls and Stat hurting, gonna be tough. Just gotta keep it close.

  72. 72

as simmons would say, brewer is in eff you mode right now

  77. 77
    Bruno Almeida says:

that’s the Brewer we cut without even giving him a chance?

    nice.

  78. 78
    Brian Cronin says:

Which is ridiculous, as the Knicks gladly would have kept him glued to their bench. They cut him as a favor, and he’s pissed at them for it?

  79. 79
    Brian Cronin says:

And there’s no way that that T is not overturned.

  80. 80
    Robert Silverman says:

The league will rescind that tech on Amar’e

  81. 81
    Brian Cronin says:

Ha! Jinx, Robert. Yeah, I can’t even bring myself to be irritated by it as it was so obviously BS that it has to be overturned.

  82. 82
    art vandelay says:

correct me if I am wrong but wasn[t that STAT’s 16th tech? he is out for game on sunday now it would seem….although it may be rescinded…that one was RIDICULOUS!

  83. 83
    BigBlueAL says:

Knicks shouldve kept Corey Brewer, he of the .017 WS/48 for his career. Baller.

  84. 84
    DReDD says:

yeah, officiating this year is really sucking all across the board

  85. 85
    TheXman says:

This is getting kind of bad, someone needs to give them a spark

  86. 86
    Brian Cronin says:

Probably not the best time to be trading baskets.

  87. 87
    latke says:

this is ridiculous — every time we get a stop we let them get an easy rebound. Alternatively, we just commit a dumb foul.

  88. 88
    art vandelay says:

This is just a total domination in every facet of the game….

  89. 89
    Brian Cronin says:

The rebounds are weird – I’m used to the Knicks getting beaten to rebounds, but here, it is not like they’re even attempting to go for the rebound.

  90. 90

Tonight’s ref — Bennett Salvatore. He’s been awful for 30 years

  91. 91
    art vandelay says:

coming in I figured this game was house’s money after last night….assuming a loss….nothing really could be bad…but now we have amare in jury, tech….and potentially embarrasing defeat…wish we had just forfeited…hah!

  97. 97

Note to self: Don’t watch Barkley tonight. ;)

  98. 98
    BigBlueAL says:

Like someone said above, Harlan said its the Knicks 7th game in 10 days. Thats crazy, especially considering how short-handed they have been in the past week.

  99. 99
    Robert Silverman says:

Oh, and if Kevin McHale spews one more tired cliche, I’m gonna hurl.

“Mike D’Antoni’s a basketball coach and he likes guys who are just basketball players”

“The Mavs just want it more”

    Ugh

  100. 100
    BigBlueAL says:

Also, worst thing that happened was Dallas losing last night and being called out by their coach.

  101. 101
    Brian Cronin says:

Yeah, when they were called soft by their coach you knew they were going to take it to the Knicks tonight. Doesn’t mean that the Knicks should fold like they have tonight, but really, a great team at home with a chip on their shoulder is a tough get for any team.

  102. 102
    art vandelay says:

Can someone please explain to me barkley’s apparent irrational hatred for the Knicks?

  103. 103
    BigBlueAL says:

I assume in the 2nd half the Knicks will make a run and get the game somewhat close and not have the final score look so lopsided although at this point I could care less. Just dont have anybody get hurt and Amar’e pickup a real tech lol.

  104. 104
    Brian Cronin says:

Can someone please explain to me barkley’s apparent irrational hatred for the Knicks?

  108. 108
    NYFaithfull33 says:

  109. 109
    art vandelay says:

Perhaps due to his beef with Oakley? My friend ran into Oak the other night in charlotte and spoke to him for a good 15 mins…Oakman REALLY does not care for Sir Charles.

    KnickInSeattle says:

I’d gladly trade this game and two more just to see somebody…preferably Oakley, break Kidd’s nose.

He’s my least favorite player in the NBA.

As for the game, not even Dallas can keep going at this rate. I think the Knicks will show some pride and hustle and pull within 10 by the middle of the fourth.

    Then lose.

yeah, because everybody else is really playing well, specially Amare…

give it a break man, the whole “Melo Haters x Melo Defenders” is starting to become ridiculous.

  113. 113
    Thomas B. says:

    Doug:
    Not sure if serious…

I’m on the fence about Melo so i’m not even sure if I’m serious. Don’t think I’ll be issuing a Melo Culpa tonight though.

I’m on the fence, so it’s not hate or defense. Sorry to upset you with my opinion.

  115. 115
    art vandelay says:

No need to overreact to this game…team just came out dead flat and even had they played well they probably would still be losing right now.

    Bruno Almeida says:

    Thomas B.:
I’m on the fence, so it’s not hate or defense.Sorry to upset you with my opinion.

I’m not upset, it’s just that there’s too much overreaction on every single thing that happens with the franchise.

i’m still on the fence too, but there’s no point in generating pointless discussion by being ironic on a night when the entire team has been terrible.

but that’s just my opinion :p

  117. 117
    dmull says:

If anyone honestly expected to win tonight they need to get a reality check. The idea that being on the 4th game in 5 nights, 7th in 10, on the road “out west” against the 3rd best team record wise in the NBA (I don’t think they’re near that good myself) somehow shouldn’t matter is ridiculous. It would be nice to see a better effort…I had talked myself into being excited for the game…but it was evident right out the gates that they were flat. Dallas looked flat too but I think they got their home second-wind.

  118. 118
    latke says:

2nd half keys: Make Haywood pay — 2 more fouls on him and both chandler and haywood have 4. This will help with the rebounding issues as well.

force turnovers. Mavs only had 4 turnovers.

keep a body on sean marion.

move the damn ball. get into the teeth of the defense. no more of this face up, jab step, 18 footer stuff from melo or from stoudemire

  119. 119
    TheXman says:

i think they want to go home

  120. 120
    Thomas B. says:

I think the Knicks will leave Dallas with a clean bill of health. How could they not after spending 48 minutes in a clinic.

I kid I kid i really do love this team.

I don’t think chauncey would have made a world of a difference in this one….they were 4-1 without him prior to this game and they just have NO energy tonight….maybe they would be down 13-14 instead of 20+ but I couldn[t see them in this one simply by having billups in there.

  127. 127
    hoolahoop says:

Brian Cronin: Yeah, when they were called soft by their coach you knew they were going to take it to the Knicks tonight.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll call the Knicks soft after tonight’s game.

Mavs had 0 offensive rebounds from the beginning of the 3rd through the point we cut it to 12 (about 9 mins i think). Coincidence…….???

    Brian Cronin says:

It’s like they physically don’t know how to get a rebound. The ball goes up, and they freak out and think they have to foul Chandler. That missed free throw was the last time they didn’t just answer a Knick shot right back.

I love Landry trying to sell that as off the Mav.

Shawne williams commits some of the most bonehead fouls imaginable…..if he could cut that down somewhat, he would be a relatively respectable defensive player.

    CRJoe says:

Well… At least they put up a fight, they showed some pride in the second and had some decent runs… I can’t help to worry about Stat though, he hasn’t played less than 36 mins this month (excluding at Utah), and he looked really fatigued for those few 4th quarter mins… Maybe the suspension is a blessing in disguise??? At the very least I hope we can blowout Indy in the next couple of games so we can save his knees for the last stretch…

  157. 157
    Brian Cronin says:

Unbelievable. Cannot get a defensive rebound to save their life.

MVP of the game: Shawn Marion. 10/15 from the field, 6 offensive rebounds.

Dallas is so deep and diversely talented. Really shows what you can do when you play the cap rules well — they are $30 million over the cap. Their 6 top guys make more than the entire knicks team. They are missing both of their starting wings — stevenson and butler — and it really doesn’t matter at all.

Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley were arguing over Mike D’Antoni’s system and if it could win a championship in the NBA. Charles went on to say that the system has been unsuccessful so far in the NBA, taking his usual adamant stance. But soon after Charles said that, Kenny pointed out that D’Antoni’s system went to the Conference Finals one year, and if Robert Horry hadn’t started the uproar that got five Suns’ players suspended, the Suns would have won it all that year, stating that the Suns were the NBA’s best team that year. I’ve never seen Charles Barkley so lost for words in my life. He really had no argument this time.

I always liked Kenny Smith the most out of all of the guys who do the national coverage (ESPN and TNT).

I feel like I’ve written almost exactly this here at least twenty times since D’Antoni got hired.

I turned this one off in the second quarter (after flashing forward and making sure there was no miracle tonight), I’m amazed Amare ended up with 36. Dallas had three big guys who physically overpowered us, Chandler, Haywood and Nowitzki with our only real big man Shelden “DNP” Williams.

still very happy with the bottom line of 1-1 on this trip, and two days off will be welcome. hopefully Chauncey is back Sunday, the silly T is rescinded, and we’re at full strength for the Pacers games.

Real GM reports that Kobe spent more than an hour after the game shooting jumpers: “Bryant worked up a sweat with multiple ball boys feeding him passes, attempting jumpers all over the floor and coming off curls.

“This is my job,” said Bryant when asked why he shot for so long after the loss.

After finishing his shooting workout, Bryant headed to the weight room.”

Like the guy or hate him, you have to respect Kobe as an intense competitor who never takes a night off. A lot of MJ in him.

    Bruno Almeida says:

This game shows how much we need a big men who can rebound, Melo leading the team in rebounding while Extra E, Turiaf and Jeffries combine for 5 (3 offensive from Jeffries) is kinda pathetic.

As a team, I think we rebound pretty well, but against well coached teams with legit big men we’ll struggle every game on that area.

What they did is basically the same thing the Knicks did for years before Donnie Walsh got there – use expiring contracts and draft picks to trade for high-priced long-term contracts, re-sign your own guys to big money, long-term contracts and use the mid-level constantly. The big difference is that the Knicks were doing this while building around Allan Houston and then Stephon Marbury. The Mavericks did it building around Dirk Nowitzki.

and getting role players who don’t eat hamburgers every day also helps.
