we’ll see, I think Bibby’s got a rep of being a much better teammate than Marbury (although he didn’t get along with Artest, tough to blame him there) and that’s the main difference there. of course, if Bibby doesn’t work out in Atlanta (which I doubt he will), that’s another strike against this theory. but like I said, we’ll see, one more year to go.

also, this:

is the understatement of the year.

to put it in perspective, it’s not like Bibby was worth an All-Star – he was worth Shelden Williams & expiring deals. We’d be taking on longer contracts (by a year), which argues for a better player (or higher pick) than Shelden Williams. Say, a mid-first rounder. Then again, Marbs will be two years older than the 2007-2008 Bibby. That drives down value, but doesn’t drive it off a cliff.

Marbury is one year older than Mike Bibby.

The past two years, they have virtually identical TS%, scoring/40, assist rate, rebound rate and turnover rate… with Marbury slightly better in most categories.

Both are historically weak defenders who have gotten even worse with age. Both are highly overpaid. Both were excellent offensive players when they came into the league, but were never real All-Star level players, despite the respective hype.

Marbury is probably considered slightly more crazy, but by next year his contract will be much shorter than Bibby’s was this year, when he was in fairly high demand. Overall, it’s hard to find a closer comparison between two players in the league. Assuming Marbs is healthy, he will be very tradeable.

no one’s going to take Marbury for his playing ability, he’s a cancer on the court, a selfish, aging knucklehead on one end and a turnstile on the other. his expiring contract may be an asset, but I tend to doubt that, I think he’ll be here through next season, either killing us on the court or sitting at home collecting massive checks again.

I think there’s an excellent chance of getting real value for Marbury, but it will need to wait until the trade deadline, not over the summer.

1) Teams will need to see that he’s healthy and can play more or less at the level he has the past two years.

2) Teams will be a lot more willing to overpay for half a season, than a whole season

3) Teams will wait to see what their needs are, for the playoff run.

Assuming he IS basically healthy, and not throwing out more of those straitjacket TV interviews, I’m guessing there will be multiple offers involving equal or longer contracts (say, through 2010) plus a 1st round pick.

I’m guessing he’ll be healthy enough… I’d be more worried that he humiliates himself and appears so Artest/batshit crazy that no one will even rent him for 3 months.

Anyone think there’s a chance of Marbury opting out? I know he’d have to be willing to forfeit $16-20 million (to play for the MLE at best and veteran minimum at worst, then again he said he wants to play in Italy and he could get 2-5 mill € in Europe which is more like $3-7.5 mill), but instead of hoping for/demanding a trade he’s got the choice to just leave.

I guess if the Knicks want to use his contract as a trade chip, it would seem to be one of their biggest, they can just tell him not to opt out and he’ll make his money and go to a winner.
