2008-9 Game Thread: Knicks vs Mavericks

The Knicks face a slumping 2-7 Dallas team at home this Sunday evening.

The Mavericks are on a five game losing streak and consider this a must-win.

From the Star-Telegram via Mavs Moneyball:

“We’ve got to get a win somehow,” Dirk Nowitzki said. “Scratch, fight, whatever it takes. It’s not pretty. We’ve got to find a way to win this game in New York. New York has got incredibly better and they’re a run-and-gun team now. We’ve got to find a way to get in there, get some stops and find a way to win the game.”

New York is looking for their second 3-game win streak of the season. Tip-off is at 6pm.

I feel a butt whipping coming tonight unless we just happen to be having another great night from the 3 point line to keep it close. This Dallas team is much better than ours, they need a win, and have to realize this is a great opportunity for them to get one on the road. I have a feeling even Dampier is going to look like a very good C tonight. These guys are too big and good for us. We will have to play very well or Dallas very bad just to stay in the game.

We are red hot from the field again. We can stay in this game if we stay hot, but over time they aren’t going to keep dropping and then the Mavs are going to make a big run.

  3. Italian Stallion

Yea, great hustle by Lee and nice play by Robinson too.

I know they are dropping, but I’m not thrilled with some of the shot selection so far.

    randolph is on fire!!!

Maybe we should enter him in the 3 point contest at the All Star Game. LMAO

Shot selection=horrible. Would like to see more drives to the basket. Can we get Zach into the All Star game? Im officially starting the Z-Bo All Star campaign.

  6. Owen

Yes. !00 effing %. Actually, Zach for President. Then maybe we can unload his contract on the TARP program.

Knicks look very strong. Nate has to get his emotions under control.
We also need to see more Wilson Chandler, even if Zach and David Lee are going well. I would rather see Zach, Chandler, Lee, Crawford and Duhon than a three guard set with Mardy Collins.

That was a fun half of basketball. They are going to have to stay hot from the field though because we have no answer for Nowitski’s size. Interesting that the Mavs actually decided to go smaller after Dampier missed a couple of foolish jumpers early. I thought they might try to use his size against us also.

Chandler was in early foul trouble

Wow. What a play, Zach Randolph grabs the offensive rebound, dishes to Duhon, who dishes to Chandler cutting, never would have happened under Isiah…

    And awesome dunk by Richardson…

Meanwhile, Randolph has become the Biedrins of the East….

The Mavs are desperate to grit out a difficult win at the Knicks? What is this, bizarro world?

Z-Bo is doing amazin. I’m sure we’ll be able to trade him this season.

zach flirtin with 30pts 20reb tonite….i would take the chance with keeping zach for at least the rest of this season..add a athletic big man that can block shots and you might be on to something…

  13. cBrooklyn

i think dantoni needs to add some clock management at the end of games when we’re up..tough loss……..!

“This is what a seven man rotation plus five minutes from Mardy Collins does to your energy level”

mardy sucks and he should be on the next bus out of town with steph, curry and james!!

Wow. That was a crushing loss. The totally ran out of gas. And Dirk did his thing. That dude is good. Seriously good. Look at that line. 39 points on 13-27, and 12-12 from the ft line, without a turnover.

Zach was almost as good though….

    So close….

Kelly Tripucka is the new part-time color guy, he’s not so good but at least he’s a Jersey boy.

I wouldn’t say it was a crushing loss, although obviously one they should have. I put it on Jamal’s disappearing after the first few minutes (on consecutive possessions at the end of regulation, he just stood in the corner the whole time. at least be a decoy/distributor!) and a terrible call on that possession under Dallas’ basket in the last minute by failed experiment Violet Palmer. seriously, how many games does she have to fuck up before people admit the double standard that must be in place to keep her in the league?

also, that last possession in regulation brought back upsetting Charles Smith memories.

  17. Brian Cronin

Yeah, I wasn’t too crushed because I was happy that they were in this game.

Although, wow, what bad game management of the end of the game.

I would expect many such games under D’Antoni, i.e. losing in the last 2 minutes of close games against better teams. At the end of games, we will just get out-talented. Dallas is at worst an upper half team in the league and was desperate for a win, so I expected one of our 45-50 projected losses today.

our end game strategy reminded me of joe gibbs end game management for the redskins last season. stick to the gameplan successfully for 90% of the game then go into “prevent mode” for the final stretch. however, the team just happens to fall into quicksand and everything comes undone in “prevent mode”.

it is no suprise that our offense sputters in the half court; half court offense is not our forte. when crawford was walking the ball up clinging to a 2 point lead with 2:30 left in the game i had a bad feeling we would choke. running is the way to go. we should have kept doing it till the buzzer sounded.

That blocking call was the game ender. We were down 4, would have had the ball with a chance to cut it to 2. Instead, Bass misses the 2nd, they get the rebound, Dirk hits a 3, up 8, game over. Not sure we would have won anyway as we were totally out of sync on offense, but that call killed us, and the announcers were being charitable saying it was close, Q was totally set and Bass ran him over.

Absolutely amazing we didn’t score on that last possession in regulation. Nice to see Q active and contributing all game, but if he could have finished one of those shots, we’d be talking about 7-3 headed to Boston.

Z-man, I don’t think this is a sign of us being unable to close out games, we’ve actually shown a positive tendency this year not to blow close games. As people have said before on this forum, we live and die with Jamal, he hit nothing in the 4th quarter and overtime.

  22. scogg25

The way teams keep coming back against us late in games,it is probably because the 7 man rotation still isn’t in the kind of shape they need to be in. I actually think that as the season goes on we will consistently keep those leads as we gain more stamina.
…Either that or the system will just totally break everyone down physically because it is too demanding for them…
So that either makes us a low-seeded playoff team to watch out for or becomes a total meltdown.

Zach should totally be an all-star. nuff said.

The all star game is like 3 1/2 months off. Zach could be in Dannemora by then. nuff said.
