    Daily knickerblogger trivia:

In their head to head comparison, player A won 13 out of 17 games against player B. A shot .463 and B shot .440, definitely proving A is a superior player.

Who is player A and who is player B?

I’m all for contextualizing statistics as much as possible, but the purpose of doing so is defeated if people carry on with “well he played against bench players” when the empirics pretty much definitively prove that wasn’t a factor.

I guess you didn’t read my post.

The problem with complex data is that there are so many factors and so much random noise, it’s often difficult to isolate and measure the impact of any one factor.

We have plenty of evidence that players coming out of college and G League are often unable to duplicate their stats at the NBA level. So we know the level of competition matters.

We also know the gap between NBA starters and NBA rotation players is a lot smaller than the gap between college/G League and NBA players.

So we know the impact (if any) will be lower. It may even be tough to isolate relative to other factors and noise.

It’s my view that it’s unwise to suspend belief in something when it makes intuitive sense, players say it matters, and we have evidence it matters, just because we aren’t sophisticated enough to isolate and measure it when the impact is smaller.

    “definitely” is definitely unwise. 🙂

I’d still say playing more as a 6th man helped Manu, but not by such a significant amount that it should be a primary consideration when comparing him to Kobe. Other factors matter more in the comparison.

I’d also argue that Hardaway would be more effective coming off the bench for the same reason.

I would still remind you that missed field goals are worth zero points, and the teams with the best scoring efficiency are almost always the best offenses in the league.

Correct, but those teams are never made up of 5 highly efficient dunkers. They are made up of high usage efficient scorers and more limited efficient role players.

IMO, the model should say, Durant is a more valuable scorer than Kobe because he’s so much more efficient on similar high usage, but if your model is also saying Tyson Chandler’s contribution to the efficiency of the offense was generally greater than Kobe’s, it’s broken.

Kobe has huge value as a #1 scorer on the typical team.

    Chandler does not.

If you put Kobe on a team with Durant, Curry, and Lebron, he could actually become a negative if he started taking shots away from them.

Chandler would add even more value to that team by playing off them and making 70% of his limited attempts.

The models can’t capture that the value varies depending on the makeup of the team, player role, system etc… The typical boxscore models can’t capture the nuance.

Bruno can you at least provide us with the decade?

And do I even want to waste brain power on this or is it going to turn out to be something ridiculous like Player A is Greg Anthony and Player B is John Stockton?

Oh sorry, they’re both active players, both have been considered superstars throughout their whole careers, one is a veteran at the end of his career and the other is in his absolute prime. They play the same position too. Making it maybe a bit too easy, one of them played for the Knicks.

some big 3 SAS lineup net rating stats including regular season and playoffs 2001-2016.

    All 3 on court: +10.9
Tony and Tim (no Manu): +6.9
Tony and Manu (no Tim): +7.1
Tim and Manu (no Tony): +12.9
    Just Tim: 6.6
    Just Manu: 7.1
    Just Tony: -0.6
    None: -2.2

Incidentally, Manu played far more than half his career minutes with Tim and over 3/4 with either Tim or Tony.

Tim and Manu (no Tony): +12.9

It would interesting to know who got most of the minutes during that period playing in Tony’s slot and whether he was a playing like a traditional PG or bringing something else to the table and more of the play making was deferred to Manu. I don’t even recall one main guy as being the backup PG for a long time.

The Spurs had occasional PG backups like Beno Udrih and Jacque Vaughn, but no one really relevant or that played many minutes until George Hill came and played 2 with Parker and 1 with Ginobili when they staggered.

Oh sorry, they’re both active players,

Damn, I was going to guess B was Patrick Ewing and A was Mike Gminski.

In all seriousness, I’ll guess that A is (obviously) Carmelo Anthony and B would probably be Durant (or possibly Paul George?)

Donnie did get it right, player A is Anthony and B is Durant. 2 of Durant’s 4 wins even came with this Golden State roster, so he was 2-11 before that against Melo.

I am in a hotel room and watching cable, which I don’t have at home.

Rachel Nichols just said that Luol Deng is “only 33.”

What. The. Fuck. Do. They. Pay. These. Morons. For.

Dengs only 33–he’s got plenty of years left before he dies
