  • [SNY Knicks] Metta World Peace: Knicks will face Lakers in NBA Finals
    (Friday, August 31, 2018 10:45:16 AM)

Metta World Peace thinks two of his former teams, the Knicks and Lakers, will square off in the NBA Finals.

So following the Deng buyout, if KD leaves GS and signs with the Lakers next year are they a favorite to win in 2020?

No. Durant will be nearing 32, LeBron will be nearing 35, and the rest of their core is still a collection of all-upside rookies, misfits who will be out of the league by 2020, and LaVar Ball’s son. The only things that could get the Lakers to true relevance is them somehow getting Durant and AD to join in Summer of 2019. I don’t know if it’s possible, money-wise, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on Durant to be an MVP contender 2 years from now, and I wouldn’t assume that LeBron will continue to be the best player in the world into his late 30s.

I think the Sixers or Celtics will be favorites by 2021, but not until Steph Curry becomes a mortal again and/or the Warriors are unable to keep their stars together through the end of their primes. I could see Draymond leaving the Dubs before Durant does. He thinks he should be paid like a top-10 player, and he’s not one anymore. The Warriors know it, too. I doubt they’re going to reward him in 2020 for the ability he had in 2016. That’s something Jackson or Thibs would do, not the Warriors.

We can also expect maybe 2-3 players from the 2016, 2017 and maybe even the 2018 draft classes to have breakout seasons and shake up the power balances in each league. I don’t think there’s anyone quite like LeBron out there who’ll lock up an entire conference for 8 consecutive years, but wins are and will always be zero sum. Franchises are always rising and falling in the NBA.

There is very likely probability that LeBron and the Warriors core both decline at the same time, and then it will be very interesting to see what happens.

Houston would be well positioned but Paul is likely to decline a lot even before that; the Celtics have their own issues with Horford, Kyrie’s health and Hayward is also 28 already. The east will probably be between the Celtics and Sixers for the next 5-6 years, but it’s probably that the best player in the conference will be Giannis and the Bucks core is at least interesting enough to make some noise.

The west tho will be very confusing. The Jazz are probably staying relevant but difficult to see them becoming contenders, the same goes for the Thunder and probably Blazers and Nuggets. The west will still be much better than the east for 3-4 years but it will be a mess. There’s a chance for teams like the Mavericks and the Suns to make major leaps to be in the conversation in not so much time.

Noah hasn’t been waived and stretched yet. By my count, that makes 18 hours and 23 minutes of smart Knicks management thus far this season.

Not only am I a Knicks fan, I’m an Oakland Raiders fan. We just made the worst trade the NFL has seen in quite some time. Good times!

Well, at least I have the Mets.

And at least I have the Jets. Hope springs eternal…or at least until about until sometime after 11:00 on Monday night.

I’m not all that optimistic about the Lakers, but man, they have been extremely lucky over the past few years. Like, rivaling the 2011-2014 Cavs in pure dumb (emphasis on the “dumb”) luck.

They kept a lightly protected draft pick three years in a row and parlayed that into DAR, Ingram, and Ball. They only surrendered the pick when it was late-ish lottery.

They weaseled their way out of the Mozgov contract using DAR, which I maintain was a stupid process move but looks like it will pay off. This also netted them a potentially productive player in Kuzma.

They watched as LeBron’s Cleveland situation became untenable and were sitting pretty with cap space and assets thanks solely to the aforementioned, purely lucky, reasons.

Now Deng is giving them a somewhat significant discount to buy him out. I wonder if Joakim Noah will do the same just kidding hahahahahahahaha.

Through it all they’ve still managed to do a ton of stupid shit (their entire non-LeBron offseason, basically) and yet they’ll still probably get another top-15 or so player. They might have a non-zero chance at a championship if their young guys come along. Why don’t our stupid decisions turn out like this?

The Lakers are really annoying to me because everybody is getting up in arms talking about the disgrace Philadelphia did to the league, while the media and casual fans conveniently ignored that the Lakers fucking went 91-237 over the course of the same 4 seasons the Sixers tanked (and have an overall worse record if you count last season too).

I give them props for a proper rebuilding strategy that brought talent and assets to a team that had none when they started it, but it’s annoying that they never get called up on it the same way the outrage hits the Sixers. They didn’t even have rookies getting injured for entire seasons, they were just hot garbage and are somehow not viewed as a disgrace because of what, giving Mozgov and Deng big deals to “try to get better”?

They did a lot of stupid shit and have sucked since 2012-13, just like us. Other than LeBron, which is lucky as fuck, they are pretty much the same team as us, even though they have had higher draft picks in several drafts.

Yeah, I do think Lonzo will be a real player eventually, but I think people are overrating their young players a lot. Ingram still needs a lot of work on his game and Kuzma is already 23 and wasn’t really that good outside of ppg. They’ll eventually build a team just because LeBron attracts people to play with him, but their current rotation looks pretty bad.
