Game Thread: New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs

We get to watch one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, Gregg Poppovich, tonight.

Hopefully it is a fun game to watch!

I want to see Dennis Smith Jr. and Mitchell Robinson dunk a lot, please.

Lance had a really nice drive & layup earlier. He does something like every other week that makes him look like a good NBA player it’s weird.

When the Spurs move the ball it’s a thing of beauty.

Dennis Smith is younger and more athletic than Mudiay, but he’s not that much better right now.

When the eye test, every model under the sun, and on/off data all agree, you are usually probably safe to assume you are right.

Just like that, Knox makes a fool out of me. lol

Hezonja is like this as well. And Mudiay. The Knicks put together a great collection of guys who are very occasionally NBA players. Does it count as a market inefficiency if it’s actively detrimental?

I swear that watching MicthRob on D is the only reason to watch this Knicks team now.

The Knicks still suck, but they look more cohesive these days.

Then again I hardly have been watching this season.

Fizdale wants to give Mudiay one of the max slots.

What a pass by Dotson.

Weird how we always play the Spurs tough at home. They’re always good, we’re always bad, we often win somehow.

I hope for the Pelicans sake that Kevin Knox really knows how to rebound.

When the Knicks play their defenders, they look a lot better. The lineup data is better when guys like Robinson, Dotson, Frank, and Vonleh are in various combination. With Kanter and Hardaway gone the defense has been a bit better.

The Knicks have been a borderline top 10 defense this month and Frank hasn’t played in any of the games.

MitchRob is just so supreme.

I don’t think its hyperbole to call him a top 10 defensive player in the NBA right now.

Like I said, the lineup data suggests the team is better when Frank is on the court. Some of the best lineups are with Frank and the other defenders. That they are playing better defense now without him is probably mostly related to less time for Kanter (and more for Robinson/Jordan), more for Dotson and less Hardaway, etc…

If we were to move Dotson to SF and put Frank at SG, the defense might improve further.

Right now, I’d love to see DSJ, Frank, Dotson, ? and Jordon/Robinson. Putting Vonleh in that lineup at PF might make it too tough to score, but Knox sucks. Even Hezonja would be better, but we’ll probably have to suffer through Knox and hope he gets better.

I’m getting a Knickerboner watching this game

If symptoms persist, watch highlights from the last 18 home games

That made me chuckle

These guards ignore MitchRob under the basket with an opening. Why? Too busy looking to setup their own shot.

I was happy to see Lance back in the game but then he immediately goes 0 for 2 in the same possession lol.

Fucking Mudiay has 1 assist on the night while playing with Mitch Lob for a non-zero amount of time

Damn, DSJ with a lowkey efficient game.

13 points on 5-11 shooting, 9 assists/0 turnovers, 5 rebounds.

Dotson would be more productive if he would stay within his circle of competence. He’s simply not ready to take the ball and create for himself off the dribble. When he gets a chance to set his feet his shooting is really solid. I have no issue with him trying to expand his game this season, but if we pick up some serious players next year I’d way rather see him as a 3&D player shooting spot ups off those guys than trying to do things off the dribble (unless he improves).

This has to be the first time someone has had double digit assists for the Knicks this year, right?

MitchRob is an athletic savant. Guys like him try whatever and are good at it. He improved his FT by leaps and bounds just practicing this season.

There you go DRed, Trey Burke had double digit assists earlier in the season apparently.

Breen is so on the money about this game – it’s hard not to have some hope for the future watching this.

Well it’s hard to feel bad about this win…

Yeah, this was a fun win. I can’t begrudge it that much (the flattened lottery odds help a lot, too).

Before the season I said I liked Dotson a lot and called him a poor man’s Mikal Bridges in case we didn’t draft Mikal. 🙂 I probably underrated him. He has limitations as a scorer. So he’s going to vanish at times when the open looks aren’t here, but he can defend, shoot, and rebound. He’s a good player!

This team has become so much more enjoyable to watch with DSJ running the point and MitchRob getting more minutes.

DSJ played his best game as a PG I’ve ever seen.

Guy did it all.

MitchRob is a damn freak. He’s so special.

All jokes and hyperbole aside that was a fun win with the young guys leading the way. Much easier being happier with wins for the rest of the season when Jordan aside all the contributions will mostly come from young guys who could have a future with this team.

DSJ-Dotson-KD-Zion-MitchRob = multiple championships

If we keep playing the right players we may take ourselves out of that bottom 3. It’s much more difficult to tank when you don’t have Kanter and Hardaway playing major minutes. That puts too much weight on Knox to carry the load.

I was joking obviously Strat but I feel you. Don’t think it’s possible to fall out of the bottom 3 though, Cavs with Love back have been winning games lately too and besides them and Phoenix I don’t see the Knicks finishing with a better record than any other team. Only possibly the Bulls so worst case scenario would be finishing with 4th worst record but I think they’ll stay in the bottom 3.

Bulls and Cavs have gone 5-5 the last 10, while we have erupted for 2-8. I think we should be safe in the bottom 3 ha ha

We’re still going to lose a lot. Dennis had 7 assists to 5 TOs in 20 minutes way back last game. But we seem to have more upside now, and we don’t have consistently shitty Tim Hardaway on the team either.

This. I think DSJ is going to make it as a starting point guard if given enough time. And Mitch is something else. Keep him!

Is it too much for me to hope that DS Jr becomes Kyle Lowry?

I think he’s more athletically freaky, has a lower b-ball IQ, is less focused on D, and is not as good of a shooter. His shot is full of weird hitches, I hope he has the discipline to “professionalize” his shot form. It’s really evident at the FT line. But in terms of potential, yeah, that’s a fair level to hope for. Except that it comes with the high wire act.

I looked at the box score about halfway through the second quarter and saw everyone on the Knicks had a positive plus minus. I thought, that is mathematically impossible. But then I realized OMG, the Knicks are winning

Good night for Knicks fans. Spike finally won an Oscar. He should’ve won it for X but I guess Hollywood won’t give a movie starring a radical black figure the recognition it deserves. They’re cooler with lesser movies that portray cops as anti-racist heroes.

It’s funny because this is pretty clearly a makeup Oscar for previous snubs but it’s for Adapted Screenplay instead of Director or Picture.

My only regret about the night is Dennis Smith Jr wasn’t able to posterize Davis Bertans. If Smith Jr is a Knick next season, Porzingis is not safe around that basket.

So true. And the funny thing is that the screenplay they adapted for Blackkklansman was way watered down from the actual story which was actually focused around the high level infiltration of our armed forces by white supremacists tied to Duke’s operation. The movie only briefly touched upon that actual case and had to cook up a whole other made up story about a bunch of racist rednecks plotting some assassination against Black Power activists. Sad to see this get more recognition than Boots Riley’s “Sorry to Bother You” – a way better film touching upon similar themes of institutionalized racism.

I haven’t a big DSJ fan, but he looked good tonight. He’s clearly our best pure PG. His shot and decision making have to improve a bit, but at least there’s some hope at that position now.

I have been a Dotson fan from the start. I’m starting to think he could eventually be more than just a good two-way role player. I know practice doesn’t count, but in warmups he’s smooth as silk and doesn’t miss. He can really shoot. It takes time to translate that into games under pressure. He won’t be an all-star caliber player, but if he can knock down 3s consistently in the 40% range, I don’t see why he can’t be a starter on a very good team. He’s probably going to continue to vanish on offense at times because he can’t create off the dribble well, but he’s young enough to keep adding to his game.

Really enjoyable win, and I can’t believe I’m saying this.

I’m positively impressed by Smith Jr, you don’t just stumble upon a 13 assists 0 turnovers game against a decent team. Mitch was also amazing, I just love him so much, I’m at the point where he’s untouchable on any trade that isn’t massively ridiculously lopsided in our favor. 15/14 on 7 shots plus 5 blocks on 30 minutes is just incredible production for anyone, let alone a kid who barely knows how to play organized high level basketball.

Man was DSJ fun to watch tonight. I’ve been watching the Knicks for over 30 years and I don’t think they’ve ever had a more athletic and explosive point guard, even including Marbury. It’s all small samples so far but he looks to be attacking the cup a ton more with the Knicks than he was with Dallas with 44% of his shots coming at the rim and a FTR of .389, both of which are way higher than his Dallas numbers. I’m not sure what’s up with his free throw shooting but presumably that will get better as time goes on. Like many have noted, he seems to have some mechanical issues with his shot.

Will be interesting to see what happens this summer, not necessarily with KD as that hopefully seems to be semi-baked in already, but with that 2nd max slot. The team seems to have a fair amount of investment in DSJ in that they’ve been chasing him for a while — doesn’t really make sense to have DSJ around if Kyrie is going to be your ball-dominant guard. It may be that beggars can’t be choosers, but if the FO is sold on developing DSJ as the PG of the future, chasing Klay Thompson or Khris Middleton may make a lot more sense. Kawhi would be the dream but that seems like a done deal to either go to LA or maybe stay in Toronto. Actually I wouldn’t want to give him a max, but Tobias Harris would fit well too.
