2019-20 Game Thread: Knicks @ Hawks – TANKAGEDDON SHOWDOWN!

Big, big game for the draft position.

Let’s go? Knicks!

Could be the last game of the season. Apparently the board of governors is making a decision tomorrow.

someone gave me floor seats to the game tonight. a while back, not as attempted battery. think of me when you see 2 empty floor seats by the knicks bench.

If I can’t watch shitty Knick games while I’m hiding from this virus its going to suck even more. There’s only so much streaming I can do before I lose my mind.

Looks like there are 6 occupied seats behind the Knicks bench. Might have a record low in attendance in ATL tonight.

>There’s only so much streaming I can do before I lose my mind.<

I was late to Netflix. I just finished binge watching Breaking Bad, El Camino, and now I'm on Better Call Saul.

I recommend push-ups, long naps, and seriously there’s always shit to clean. Ovens, for instance. The tops of cabinets. Closet floors.

If i don’t see players wearing surgical masks while playing I don’t believe it’s so worrying!!!!

Same. I’m booked to start a job on the 30th in times square. Pretty sure I’m screwed whether it happens or not.

Something weird happening at okc-jazz, both teams got sent back to the locker rooms

Hawksblogger should sell “there’s something in the air tonight” t-shirts.

they are waiting for league permission to start bc
gobert is out sick per announcers

It sounds like the league is just going to go with games without fans rather than canceling the games.

woj claims knicks were sole team who wants to continue to play games with full arenas unless barred by law

i hate losing money…i really hate “losing” money…i don’t mind spending it so much, although it does take me a while to get around to deciding on purchases i make (except the grocery store, where for some weird reason costs just don’t seem to matter at all to me very much)…

i don’t know maybe that’s why i was so fixated on lost revenue for a good while when thinking of this virus…

bob’s story yesterday though snapped me out of that mindset pretty quick…i know death occurs at a pretty unimaginable scale around the world daily…i guess it’s easy to get a bit de-sensitized to it…i’m already fairly detached from most things as is…the thought of someone losing a friend or family member though does make it a lot more real and personal…

The Hawks really fucking stink I think we’re going to get another win*

*this is pretty much what I said at halftime last game

frank’s hitting at 87% this year from the line…that just makes me think there has to be a consistent outside shot in him somewhere…

“woj claims knicks were sole team who wants to continue to play games with full arenas unless barred by law”

Shocked!

Owen:

Is it possible that our medical stuff found the antidote for the virus?

oh jeez, you know you’re fucking up in life when you’ve shared the same thought as james dolan…forgive me all…

Ok, really really important question here.

If they cancel the season will Mitch get credit for breaking the all time FG% record?

“The game tonight has been postponed. You’re all safe. Please take your time and leave the arena in an orderly manner. You’re all safe.”

Nothing like repeating “You’re all safe” twice to make people feel decidedly UNsafe.

PLEASE CONTINUE POSTING YOU ARE ALL SAFE DO NOT STOP POSTING YOU ARE PERFECTLY SAFE ALL IS WELL

I was late to Netflix. I just finished binge watching Breaking Bad, El Camino, and now I’m on Better Call Saul.

I just did the same. I’m a good way through BCS — so good! I like how breaking Bad is a series about a good person turning into a villain. BCS seems to be about people who can’t be happy with “good enough.” Not to give it away, but you know how Saul ends up in Breaking Bad…

They didn’t cancel the game they postponed it. Gobert/Mudiay are sick and I think they don’t want the Jazz playing another team until they know if they have coronavirus or not.

what i found most surprising about better call saul was how easy it was for me to become immersed in the supporting cast of the show…

chuck mcgill in the season finale of season 3 still sticks with me…kim wexler is one of my favorite characters on any show…

KP might benefit by playing with a respirator given his stamina issues.

Performance art at its most surreal. I envision an avant garde film where a wide shot shows a single brave fan at a Knick game. MSG is empty otherwise. The camera zooms in and the fan has a bullhorn and starts blaring Sell the Team. A group of security guards march over to the fan and escort him out of MSG. The organist then starts to play The Sounds of Silence. What do you think Editman?

Ellington should go to an opthalmologist asap

ellington over trier and dotson this year is going to go down as one of the more puzzling decisions that was made…

geo: ellington over trier and dotson this year is going to go down as one of the more puzzling decisions that was made…

His 3s are going all over around the rim.
Its definitely fun as comedy but its not 3s specialist in any universe

I guess they’ll have to postpone most of the rest of the season.

Guess I better enjoy this last four minutes. Put Frank in!!!

I guess the difference between picks, draft odds etc isn’t great, but in the scheme of things it wouldn’t be a bad one to blow…

DRed:
Knicks about to blow one last game

Guess I better enjoy this last four minutes. Put Frank in!!!

Frank in the game! He needs just one FG to finish greater than 50 TS for the season. If he doesn’t get it, he’d be sub 50 TS. Drama!

The season being suspended should have a new post but we need the game to end first. Hopefully they find a way to lose.

Well, this is totally insane. I imagine the prognosis for someone like Rudy Gobert (and other NBA players) is pretty good, but this is all still terrifying.

Would’ve been nice if we lost a few more games and had Trae Young instead of Kevin Knox huh?

Never mind. I miscalculated. Frank needs to go 3-3 in OT to finish > 50 TS. Not gonna happen.

Who’d have thought that this game would be so consequential?

I swear to god Trae Young has a baby’s head of hair

This is the knickiest ot.

Honestly I cannot imagine a Knicksier outcome.

This might be Mike Miller’s last game as an NBA head coach. Same for Pierce?

I would assume that if Gobert is positive, that means the entire Jazz team etc… and all their recent opponents need to be tested quickly. This is turning into a nightmare. I’m hoping for some warm weather. It’s unclear how this virus reacts to warmer weather, but generally warmer weather and high humidity tend to have a positive impact on virus transmission. So let’s hope this one is at least similar in that regard.

I wonder how the Clippers feel about giving up their first round pick for Marcus Morris now? If they don’t have the playoffs that will be quite the conundrum.

NBA.com has Frank at .497 TS%. It’s not .500, but that’s close. If this is the end of the season, Frank exceeded my expectations.

This pandemic is getting crazy. Today, I also got told that the University of Colorado is now holding all their classes remotely. From what I hear, most universities are doing the same.

Yeah we have to hope that warmer temps provide a respite. It was very discouraging, however, to read that the expert I referenced in previous thread said previous corona viruses were not seasonal. If Covid-19 is the same, the best hope is then that the death rate falls since there probably are many people who have had the virus and didn’t know it and recovered fine. Maybe they figured they had a cold or flu. So the denominator (total # of cases) via more testing starts to rise at a greater rate than the numerator (# deaths) and death rate falls. Perhaps that will start to calm people and a vaccine is fast-tracked if that’s even possible.

I was planning to go to a dance at the JCC in Manhattan this weekend. Then I received this email:

We are writing tonight to let you know that we learned today that a child who was in a program at the JCC on Saturday night has since tested positive for COVID-19 along with her mother…Out of an abundance of caution, the Board of Directors of the JCC has made the decision to close the JCC tomorrow (Wednesday, Mar 11) and Thursday, Mar 12 in order to do a thorough and deep hospital-grade sanitizing of our building. It is our expectation that we will reopen on Friday; should that change, you will hear from us.

Scary times.

All of the Los Angeles Community College schools are going remote starting next week. Athletics’ contest will still be held until further notice.
The thing is, if the students and faculty get to work from home, then I believe Staff should have the option to do so similarly without using up sick time. My supervisor (the AD) has already entertained our office go remote except for when there are home games/events.

2 weeks ago Greek government cancelled the annual carnivals that take place in many cities of the country.
A few days ago they closed the schools for 14 days and recommended avoiding crowded places (with over 1000 people attending).
There are also plans for cancellation of the annual school and military parade of the 25th of March.
Looks to me like Nba suspension was definitely expected and slightly belated due to $$$$

Going to put my tinfoil on here. I’m going out on a limb that there will be a new conflict in the Middle East shortly to get oil prices to pump back up. US fracking can’t survive at current prices.

We’ll see if my world politics knowledge is equally as terrible as my basketball knowledge.

It's a double edged sword.

We have some heavily in debt companies that won't survive at these prices, but lower energy prices are a stimulant for almost everyone else. In the end, the strong companies will buy the best assets of the over-leveraged and bankrupted ones for a fraction of what they are worth and it will all work out over time, but there will be some pain for workers and stakeholders of the losers.

So the Knicks are now quarantined because they played the Jazz within the past 10 days.

(Maybe Frank is playing well because the virus doesn’t negatively affect children??)

had the “talk” with ma – what ever you do, please don’t leave the house…

It was only a matter of time, sadly.

Guys, start doing the right thing now and DON’T LEAVE HOME unless it is totally necessary. I know government hasn’t taken full action yet, but better safe than sorry.

Dont’ worry
In some weird way I think it’s the first time in my life (I’m 33) that Italian government isn’t the most embarrassing of them all…

I hope that this pandemic disease will unveil the otherworldly incompetence of populist guys like him that strive on fear and ideology (or anti-ideology, which is the same). Maybe this could also be the end of populism, who knows, silver lining here, maybe this time without games will help Frank heal his groin and tight his handle…

If this was the last game of the season it brought the Knicks to the 6th seed, instead of tied for 4th, right? Brilliant strategic execution for the long term health of the team. Truly brilliant.

On the other hand it probably saved them from winning their way to 9th, so there’s that.

Good point Ingmarrrr. I was actually thinking during most of the game that we actually look a like a good team playing a bad team. Of course the ending mostly shoved that thought out of my mind, but still, we could really have climbed in the standings if we kept playing like that.

Worrying about draft position right now seems silly. There is no real consensus top pick or even top tier this year in the draft like last year where it was Zion, then Ja, then RJ.

We won with RJ playing really well and also Mitch continuing to play well.

Also, we got that clippers pick in a year when they may not even be able to use Morris in the playoffs.

My hope is that this crisis will finally wake up our politicians and business leaders to the fact that we need a stronger social safety net, especially health care and paid medical leave for everyone. The economic impact of this could be greatly mitigated if everyone could just go to the doctor and get a test without worrying about the financial consequences or take time off from work and not worry about losing their jobs or not paying their bills.

Worrying about draft position right now seems silly.

Higher picks will always be worth more. If you’re happy with who’s available at #6 (no matter who’s chosen 1-5) you should also want the #1 overall pick so you can trade down and pick up more assets. There’s no silver lining to winning last night’s game, just more chatter about how good that single marshmallow tasted.

The economic impact of this could be greatly mitigated if everyone could just go to the doctor and get a test without worrying about the financial consequences or take time off from work and not worry about losing their jobs or not paying their bills.

100%.

It would help if they were readily available and if people didn’t behave like they have regarding disinfectant wipes, toilet paper and such.

Hmm. What happened to the idea of being OK with wins as long as they came off the improved play of our young players? Our recent wins were at least partly attributed to RJ, Mitch, Frank and Knox all stepping up.

There is no world where our young players, who have the most potential to get better as a season progresses, play better and we don’t win more games.

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t have potential young and improving building blocks and still lose every game and therefore get the best draft position.

Of course, if we lose these games, then you get to complain about how awful our young players are and we have no future.

Also, the lottery odds are flattened. New Orleans had way more wins last year than we would have had this year and got freaking Zion.

Considering The Knicks every year since Ewing have dropped down in the draft and not moved up, eventually you think the odds will flip in our favor for once.

It’s a funny world where people constantly question the competence of the world famous billionaire who almost single-handedly defeated the entire American political establishment to win the White House. Maybe it would help if more people Googled things like “Obama healthcare website” or “Obama H1N1.”

“My hope is that this crisis will finally wake up our politicians and business leaders to the fact that we need a stronger social safety net”

You mean like the one they have in Italy? I wonder how many people will actually look back at this crisis when it’s over and truly evaluate how the various systems in the various places actually performed and use that information to re-examine their own thinking. Probably not many. One of the greatest insights delivered to us by the modern world is that when people were given access to virtually all human knowledge, they mainly used it to prop up pre-existing and non-rational beliefs and attitudes.

Also that’s a gambler’s fallacy my dude

Seeing conservatives try to “lol the libs are freaking out” their way out of this one is perhaps the one humorous thing to arise from this situation. Check the markets buddy, it’s Trump’s rich friends freaking out the most!

Well, congrats to Mitch. I think we can all agree he now holds the title of NBA FG% King.

It’s absolutely amazing that someone would come on a Knicks fan website and un-ironically make the argument that you can tell a guy is competent because he’s very wealthy due to having inherited a lot of money from his dad. I mean, read the room.

So Coronavirus is bad in Italy because of universal health care?

Got it.

It has nothing to do with them having a much older population or being hit first before everyone really knew what was going on or them being probably the number one tourist destination country in the world.

We can’t free market our way out of this one.

I like to imagine Mike saying all of his dumb stuff in real life with the added “Mike” at the end of it.

So if the season ends, we won the last game of the season. That makes us the champs, right?

In Italy the situation is worse because:

– it started early
– we have A LOT of 80+ citizens
– population density is high
– national customs involve a crazy high number of hugs, kisses, general invasion of personal space
– people travel a lot
– people have no discipline

Terry if you want to take the position that Europe's markets and economy will recover faster than the United States' because of the opinions expressed in this article I will very happily take the other side of that trade.

That's not an opinion on Trump or anything such. Swift is right, you can't free market your way out of this. But you can't Universal Health Care it away, either. It's a pandemic. It's not like London is getting off lighter than NYC, and they had as much time to prepare and a similar international travel rate (both higher than Italy, which is definitely not #1 in the world).

And FWIW I admire Italy’s decision to value the human life impact over the economic. That’s enough of a platitude. I think it sucks that our focus is on the short term economic impact. But it is, and it will likely recover faster because it’s inherently stronger.

I don’t think their markets and economy will necessarily recover faster. That seems completely unknowable at the moment. I do think their people are in much better shape, both physically and mentally, knowing that missing work, etc. won’t devastate them financially, and that has a lot of value that isn’t always reflected in economic indicators.

My wife just started a new job and would have an insurance lapse until the end of May if I were not able to cover her under my insurance in the interim. Do you think she would be better off facing a severe respiratory illness if she had MFA?

People are going to skip going to the doctor or ER to get checked out because of the cost of care. I make six figures, live frugally, have zero debt except a reasonable mortgage (<20% of net monthly income) that I share with my wife, and still find it difficult to stomach five-minute office visits at $150 a pop on my PPO. The cost of a recent plantar wart cryo treatment, totaling 30 seconds of care, cost me $450 out of pocket.

If you're a cashier at a grocery store or at a fast-food restaurant, exposed to hundreds if not thousands of people daily, how does the prospect of that medical bill sound?

It’s a funny world where people constantly question the competence of the world famous billionaire who almost single-handedly defeated the entire American political establishment to win the White House.

Just because a person is good at marketing himself doesn’t mean he’s good at running the country

Just because a person is good at marketing himself doesn’t mean he’s good at running the country

It’s hilarious to think that he marketed himself, too. The white-nationalist populist movement has been thoroughly astroturfed, the result of a billion-dollar disinformation campaign by “non-profits” like Center to Protect Patient Rights, Freedom Partners and Americans for Prosperity. Trump just happens to be the perfect mix of famous, stupid, crass and narcissistic to appeal to a worldview that’s been fomented by evil fucks like Charles Koch for decades. Is he exactly what Charles Koch wanted? Of course not. But they got their taxes slashed and environmental protections gutted, so here we are.

Connor Roy is not purely a work of fiction.

I love that Woj is putting it out there that the other Jazz players have been bitching about Gobert touching their stuff even before this and now the guy whose locker is next to his also has it. It’s gotta be scary, also, that Gobert was going to play last night if his test didn’t come back positive, demonstrating how people could be spreading the disease while still healthy enough to play a game of professional basketball.

These are fine arguments about our current health care system vs a new one.

But swift (and the author TNFH cited) are using a pandemic as an excuse to say “if we had universal health care this wouldn’t be so bad.” Let’s wait and see what happens in Germany, France, the UK, and here before advancing our political agendas, pronouncing the United States as the hardest hit economy, and attributing the economic pain to a lack of universal health care.

FWIW, if everyone in NYC could see a doctor for free this week, we’d probably have more sick people going untreated than we currently do!

And the Senate isn’t going to do anything

FTFY

I love that Woj is putting it out there that the other Jazz players have been bitching about Gobert touching their stuff even before this

I stole this from r/NBA, but Gobert touching all the mics and phones at the press table is #1 Shaqtin a Fool, forever and ever, amen

I realize I’m one of the biggest pains in the ass on this forum at times, but that’s just basketball. This is much more serious.

There will be plenty of time for the political blame game when we get through this (and we will). For now, we are in this together and people need to work together, especially in Washington to address both the health and economic impact of this. So maybe we can mostly just offer insights that will be helpful to each other and insights about the health of players, staff. workers etc… and worry about what we did wrong and what we can do better as a country later.

I came here looking for stress relief, not to get wound up and more anxious.

I wonder if Gobert will face any legal ramifications for what he did at the press table, esp. if one or more of those present end up with the virus?

I wonder if Gobert will face any legal ramifications for what he did at the press table, esp. if one or more of those present end up with the virus?

Absolutely not. That would be a can of worms that no one wants opened, especially when it’s the consequence of ignorance, not malice.

I just blew up at my Dad because he was insisting he was still going to go to the opera.

I think some anxiety is appropriate.

But Strat, I totally agree. This is a time to work together.

What Gobert did was immature and foolish, but there probably aren’t many people that feel worse about it than him. It was a brain fart from someone that didn’t really understand the implications and risks associated with his clowning around. That only one other player and no other staff tested positive was almost a blessing. That said, these guys are young professional athletes in great health. The prognosis is very good.

“I just blew up at my Dad because he was insisting he was still going to go to the opera.”

I had a serious argument with my girlfriend last night because she’s insisting on going to work using a public express bus into Manhattan when she’s fully capable of working from home. She’s a brilliant woman but even after explaining to her that I’m 61 and if I get sick the prognosis is less favorable, it did not get through. I think some people are in some kind of denial phase or do not understand risk correctly.

There is the risk that something will happen (probably low) and there are the implications of that risk if it occurs (possible death).

People don’t understand that latter point well. I wanted to strangle her for being so thick. I know another argument awaits me tonight.

“That said, these guys are young professional athletes in great health. The prognosis is very good.”

I guess we’re about to get some good data on how the virus affects really tall people.

Here is my worry.

I think the US in some ways as an advantage over places like China, Japan, Italy, etc. We do have high population density areas but also our country is more spread out and even in mid sized cities people have more room than they do in Asia. Italy is also a very small, high density population. Cities in Asia are all bigger than places like NYC or socal and much more tightly packed in.

But that could also mean that in the US its going to linger longer. We may not have a huge spike like in Italy where the system gets overwhelmed all at once but we could have to go on for much longer and the effect on our economy and people’s lives could be worse because we may not get over it as fast as a country that can just quarantine everyone for a month.

>>>I came here looking for stress relief, not to get wound up<<<

Winding each other up is a big part of what we do here. Not gonna kick that to the curb.

(I kid, of course. But it's ironic: I come here knowing I will get wound up *and* somehow that relieves stress.)

Jut for the record, high blood pressure is a risk factor in the outcome. 🙂

kinda glad I didn’t finish watching the second half of that pistons’ game from sunday… still got it on the DVR (along with the most recent saul episode)…

I’m gonna hang on to it til I get real desperate…

still working through the lonesome dove series…still early in lonesome dove, and looking forward to streets of laredo…afterwards though, think I’ll read through the hunger games…I can watch those movies a thousand times over, never read the books though…it’ll be nice to fill in the blanks on the story and have some images to work with while reading…

robert duval and tommy lee jones’ voices stay in my head while reading through the lonesome dove series

I joined a film club recently and we’re exploring David Lynch. We’re watching Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks (optional for the club, but I’m definitely watching it), and Eraserhead. Remarkably, I’ve never seen any of them. Not sure how that happened.

If the unspoken part of this story is that 61 year old strat has a live-in milennial girlfriend… god bless you, man.

oh my goodness strat, you know that same exact discussion is going on all over the world in different homes…

I have a shitty immune system that’s not improving with age – my biggest point of emphasis health wise: manage stress…

the older I’ve become the worst I physically react to it…

fire fuels some folks, it just burns me out…

scheduling activities to relieve stress, figuring out comfort activities and behaviors, stretch a lot…hell, if necessary make myself repeat: I am calm and I’m gonna be okay (I gotta be honest – I feel a little foolish at times for doing that one 🙂

but, a lot of stressful situations could arise in our lives as an affect of this thing…

not everyone’s cup of tea, but a little marinating and medicating seems to help…or, at least it ain’t kilt me yet and it seems to make the passage of time flow a little smoother…

Mulholland Drive

This is my 1a or 1b favorite movie. No film hits all of my narrative pleasure centers more.

So we’ll probably draft somewhere from 7-9. That’s right in the Cole Anthony zone.

NY CITY BLOOD or whatever

But be calm. It’s really working out. And a lot of good things are going to happen.

Best film club ever!

(You’ll enjoy watching those movies way more than you’d enjoy watch Knick games)

I’m a long-time Lynch fan. Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks: The Return, etc. are amazing. I’ve seen all his stuff. Be sure to check out his recent Netflix short film, “What Did Jack Do?”

Last night, the toilet paper and medicine aisles at the local Target looked like they’d been ransacked. Literally no toilet paper to be found, and little to no children’s meds, throat lozenges, etc. Both funny and sad at the same time.

geo,

I have some mild anxiety issues after close to 40 years of being in data processing, meeting crazy deadlines, and being under high pressure constantly.

I walk a couple of miles a day as a way of staying fit and relaxing. When the weather gets nice I either shoot some basketball by myself for 30 minutes or play doubles tennis once a week with friends of a similar age. I find that staying somewhat fit keeps me more relaxed.

I also recently joined a meditation class that meets a coupe of times a month. I meditate on my own a couple of times a week also. Overall it’s helps, but basically my nervous system is torched. This kind of stuff is not good for anyone, but it’s definitely not good for me. Breath deeply through your nose slowly, hold it, then breath through your mouth at about 1/2 the speed you breathed in. Great for short term stress relief.

I do a lot of breathing during Knicks games. 🙂

>If the unspoken part of this story is that 61 year old strat has a live-in milennial girlfriend… god bless you, man.<

lol. no way.

She's 54, smarter than me in many ways, better looking than me, more educated than me, and successful, but she has a stubborn streak on some things. It's usually no issue because I'm very easy going, But I see her staying home right now as a no brainer decision since she has that option. She was calling me nuts. smh

“My rallies are very big. They’re very big rallies. We’ll be making a decision at the appropriate time. The next one scheduled is for the 25th, and that’s in Tampa. But we’ll have to see whether or not we do. I’m not going to do it if I think it’s going to be negative at all, if we haven’t made that turn yet. We’ll make the turn — the question is when. And the question is how many people will die? And I don’t want people dying. That’s what I’m all about. This [the White House] is the nerve center. I want to be right here. I don’t want to be flying around in airplanes all over the place.” -President of the United State, earlier today

Would James Dolan get a Covid-19 test after hanging out at dinner with someone who might have it?

My father is an absolute asshole when it comes to telling him to stop going out so much. He had a heart attack last year and has some lung problems as it is. You can at least try not to get it…

I’m pretty much guaranteed to get it at some point since I volunteer for the fire rescue and we get sent on medical calls. I’ve already priced that in.

Times like these I realize how important sports is to our everyday lives, thinking about having no sports at all to watch over the next few weeks sucks big time. There is only so much Netflix a person can watch lol. I work at a middle school and we are preparing to go virtual which means kids having to log on everyday at home for 3 hours to do their class work, good luck with that. My school is an A+ school with a ton of real smart kids too and I still can’t see them doing that especially since we have Spring Break starting on the 21st. I couldn’t wait for Spring break cause I was gonna go up to Tampa to watch the final Yankees home spring training game and was excited for opening day of the MLB season. I guess the positive of the start of the season being delayed is it gives more time for Judge and Stanton to get healthy by opening day! Really shouldn’t be looking for positives about this but gotta keep it light at times. Hope everyone stays safe.

This sucks. I am the only guy I know who has to continue to go in for work. I had to go at the break of dawn to get supplies like milk and meat from deserted supermarkets in Brooklyn. My kids’ schools are closed so my wife is annoyed that I have to go out. I mask and shield with every patient encounter. Family and friends don’t want me near them since I’m a doctor and “contagious”, and now everyone is telling me to move out so that my first trimester wife doesn’t catch it from my selfless self. Where the f am I gonna go.

Mulholland Drive is also probably my favorite movie. I’m a sucker for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but Mulholland Drive is just such a complete work of art. I don’t know if I’ve seen a movie that more fully fulfills the idea what it wants to be (if that makes sense).

Also, if anyone is looking for quarantine Netflix recommendations, the Castlevania series just had season 3 drop and is suprisingly good for a cartoon based on a video game. Grade-A voice acting, compelling characters and absurd levels of Gothic violence is a pretty winning combination.

Also also, if you liked Ex Machina or Annihilation, Devs is shaping up to be pretty amazing.

I could watch Mulholland Drive everyday of the shutdown and not get bored.

(ps— Blake Griffin is having a shutdown party tonight, per my sources at the Santa Monica Bev Mo.)

bidiong and Hubert, my pop is 79 and has a part time job as a sheriffs deputy running the metal detector at the court house in Covington, KY. I’m struggling to get him to stay home and not go to work. This bullshit job is gonna get him killed, it’s impossible to get him to understand this cause he’s halfway convinced it’s a hoax. My father is going to get a virus that kills 15% of people his age because he watches Fox at work and won’t listen to other people. And he’s gonna give it to my mom in the process. I am not prepared for my parents deaths.

soooooo, went to the store to go buy a loaf of bread and gallon of milk…ohhhh, very interesting stuff going on – you wanna know what’s really on in many americans mind right now: I better go to the store to buy me some shit paper, lots and lots of it…

who knew toilet paper would be such a scarce commodity…

out here in cali we’re not really so skilled at emergency preparation buying…folks that have to deal with hurricanes or snow storms annually are really good at that kind of stuff…

earthquakes are different, there’s just no warning to it to make you go buy stuff to prepare to wait it out at home…

First off, hello.

Started with Linsanity, stayed lurking because you guys are awesome. Although I’m a half-Rocket fan half general NBA fan, Knicks will always have a piece of my heart. I would prefer here to any of the rockets discussion sites any time, no disrespect.

I wanted to type something earlier this week but got distracted, now the NBA is gone. The two nice things that brought me joy during the last two months were Aussie Open and the NBA. I honestly did not expect the NBA will be taken away by this virus. It sucks.

Now just a little bit of me: I’m Chinese, studied in the States for college around Obama’s term, now back to my hometown in a medium city in northern China working for a US company. 2 months ago everything seems to be at normal but the virus has already landed. We didn’t know. We had our Chinese new year gatherings and then it started to report the SARS like things in that southern city. Now we know the bureaucracies has costed us 1+ months to contain it. And the virus has potentially 2 weeks to show symptoms so the hospital workers there were treating the patients all got infected making that city’s health care collapse. At least they eventually shut down the city at the end of Jan. and the government machine started to run like a Ferrari. Malls and theaters shut down. Quarantined everyone who has travel history or contact with everyone with travel history to that province for 2 weeks, and if somebody shows a fever then quarantine any close to that. And everyone stays at home until now, that our city has been cleared to be OK now but schools are still closed with no certain date to reopen. I really don’t have a reason to doubt the numbers deceasing now, because the extreme measures have been done. If I was in origin city, it would be a totally different story as they experience death in the neighborhood.

I just hope you guys can work remotely and stay healthy until the storm passes. I know it will as local IKEA just reopened…

I went to the local Publix in Boca Raton yesterday and was amused to find the toilet paper was sold out! Also I could not find any bleach of any type nor rubbing alcohol. I am a big fish eater and the canned fish was virtually gone at 4PM.

this is a beautiful article about how political measures can alter the spreading curve of the virus.

one of the saddest things I’m seeing here at work (a public health addiction centre near Venice) is that we are all starting to play like a Knicks lost season: in order to play better and at least try to salvage the season by learning and developing often young players but especially veterans start to looking for their own stats, resulting in a “me first” mentality that make a lost season a disaster. The same here, no one really trust the boss, from nurses to social assistant to every body is just doing “his thing”, so you can’t really have a cohesive way of working etc, and a learning opportunity is just becoming a huge grudge generator. This crisis is just making emerge all the underlying hate and splittings in the group.
It’s really difficult to acknowledge competence and authority and the necessity to trust your direct superior…
just to say that I’m really starting to understand Knicks team dynamics over the years!

Glad to hear you are well. There was a little bad luck involved when the outbreak came just as the Spring Festival was approaching with all the travel back to people’s home town’s/family etc. Most Americans don’t realize China is virtually on vacation for a month around the Spring Festival and travel is huge both domestically and internationally then. That surely made matters worse.

Government Bureaucracies suck world wide as everyone is in CYA mode.

The guys who thought it was a good idea to muzzle/suppress/censure those brave early physicians who realized there was a grave problem and “criticized” them for spreading “rumors” should be horse whipped. They are directly responsible for what will be tens of thousands of deaths and the crippling of the world’s economy for a year at least.

And then to try to get the heat off of themselves they have to come up with this BS?

If anything, Italian government is trying to do its best. I’m really surprised seeing the usually incompetent and shady guys acting (almost) rationally and with an unusual levelheadedness. Then again, the average Italian is at her best only during dire times.

As of today Slovenia for the third time in last 15 years installed the PM 2/3 of the country loathes…our own Great Divider/ the Prince of darknes/General Glatzkopf three of many nick names he was rightfouly given.
A rightwing militarist with commie past & WW2 colaborative apologism if thats even posible. His values and worldview have little incommon with mine.
But I would be lying if I said he’s not the best solution for the job at the moment. In last five days he did more than the outging goverment did in last month and a half. Guy is just forged for emergency time.
Public life completely out, border to Italy finaly closed, financial help prepared, Civil Protection took over the coordination of mesures….no time for halfdicking.
Thanks Mioz for sharing the article. We had a public letter translated in our newspapers. It was from a Doctor from Bergamo. Scary and sad. Stay strong Mioz…Doctors going in the the trenches right now in our country too.
As for othes love you all and stay as antisocial as possible.

This whole tweet thing looks weird and stupid to me. Firstly, why is that guy posting on Twitter which is blocked in China, so who is he preaching to? I suppose it could be some kind of muddy the water thing but I really don’t know. In a time of difficulties like this conspiracy theories have been spreading in all kinds of fashion in China and beyond. It won’t surprise me if some official actually believes them and try to preach it. Note that Twitter accounts actually doesn’t mean anything in China where there is not a lot of official speakperson for Chinese opinions, so I don’t think it should be treated like any special guy.

Well at least we know all the leadership in that city and province has been striped and replaced with guys from elsewhere. The previous party leader in my city has been transferred to replace Wuhan’s mayor or something. It’s quite meaningless for the world now as the pandora’s box is open anyway. I can only assume those who underestimated the cost have been regretting in agony.

If you want to get prepared quick just go out and get a big bag of brown rice and assorted dried beans. You’re instantly prepared as long as you have water. You can live a long time on beans and rice and it’s dirt cheap.

Buy a water purifier off Amazon. They work great.

Now they cancelled the Masters.

So there will be literally no sports on television for the next month.

Oh well, I guess it’s time to catch up on some of the 200 shows my friends and relatives have been suggesting for the past few years.

I’m curious what the current consensus is – do people think this season eventually gets finished in some abbreviated format, or just abandoned altogether?

Lentils are the best!…. high in protein with a remarkable mineral profile. Tons of water soluble vitamins. High in fiber, too. Very low in fat. Zero cholesterol. 3.5/1 Omega 6/Omega3 ratio. Dirt cheap……

We’ll be livin large if we are out of the woods in 2 months….. We’ll be lucky to have an NFL season….. Shit can get out of control very quickly.

Thanks too all Knicker-bloggers, who would have thought the Knicks would have a world wide audience that would shine during a pandemic. Your a monument to civil discourse and statistical analysis. Hopefully we’ll find the humor sooner than later.

Just watched the Hawks game replay, after a few weeks of not watching the games at all. Both teams sucked big time. Maybe it’s good they postponed the season.

Here in Israel our PM is using the crisis to escape his trial for bribery, which is supposed to start next week. He closed down schools yesterday, but left kindergartens, and orthodox universities open (because the virus doesn’t come to those who study HIS words.) Then he spent his primetime TV minutes on complimenting himself, and then our ministers of health, and treasury stood up and told us how great the PM is. Totally disgusting, even if our health system was in good shape, and not exhausted after years of neglect.

While the press conference took place, our minister of justice gave himself the authority to close down the courts, if he believes the public health justifies it. So our PM’s trial — yes, he’s going to be on trial for bribery and he’s still the PM – will be able to escape justice.

I realize this is out of context to anyone who doesn’t understand the internal politics here, but the whole story would take too long to tell. Happy times.

And since I suspect the Knicks season, at least, is over my review of our young player development from this year since that’s the only thing that really matters, and in the interest of spurring some discussion:

-Iggy: Inc.; Doesn’t make sense that they didn’t give him any burn in a lost season despite playing well in the G-league, but at least he got minutes somewhere, in contrast to…

-Trier: F-; Obviously he did something to piss someone off, but no other team in the league would’ve handled him like this. <300 minutes makes 0 sense. Continued to be significantly more productive in his extremely limited minutes than many of the guys both old and young playing ahead of him.

-DSJ: F-; There were obviously red flags when they got him, but he was still a prospect with a chance and we managed to completely break him. A lost season.

-Dotson: F; I like the theory of him as much as anyone but I can't find one thing to point to as even a hint of progress in his 3 years in the league now. Still failing to break through at age 25; he looks like a write-off to me.

-Knox: D-; Improved his shot distribution and somehow ended up with an even worse TS% than last year, so much for that theory. The slight improvements in the rest of his game offer the faintest tendrils of hope, but he still needs the ball to go in so much more and he looks further away than he did 12 months ago.

RJ; C-; About what I expected. Defense better than I expected; passing worse. Is going to need the jumper to work out to be productive I think. Would like to see him in a real offense with spacing

-Frank: C; Season is ending at the worst time for him. Seemed to be taking real steps forward but still a ways to go and needs to prove it consistently.

Mitch: B-; Slight bump in minutes and decrease in the foul rate. Was able to show similar per-minute production with the larger role which is good but didn't show any new elements of his game.

-DSJ: F-; There were obviously red flags when they got him, but he was still a prospect with a chance and we managed to completely break him. A lost season.

I don’t agree with this. True, he was a prospect who could improve, but it’s not true he didn’t get a chance. Both Fizdale ans Miller gave him minutes. He dropped off the radar recently, but that’s because he was out a lot of games for concussion protocol. I don’t know why you say we “broke” him. I thought he was playing better and showing more potential on defense even if he often threw the ball away.

This article suggests the salary cap might go down $10 to $15 million dollars because of the Coronavirus shutdown.

So there will be literally no sports on television for the next month.

UFC is still going through with competitions for now…

dana white and mister orange are buds though, so it kind of tracks…

good for rory yesterday being like: why are we still playing golf

yeah, I haven’t really started looking or trying to figure out when this virus may slow down or be contained…which may vary wildly by location…

Bob I have split pea soup simmering in my oven right now and I use lentils in a red bean and rice soup I make. Right now I’m eating three bean soup for lunch. Haha. All super healthy for you, meatless and cheap AF to make. I think I spend about $15 a week on lunch on my soup diet, if that.

Hmm. I was told after my colonoscopy last summer that I have diverticulosis, so need to do a much better job at getting lots of fiber in my daily diet. I’ve been doing that, but will now be trying out the rice, beans, and lentils ideas you guys posted above. I’m gonna make Jambalaya rice and beans tonight.

Thanks!

BTW, we have our first confirmed case in Knoxville, and it’s looking like our May trip to NYC is in serious jeopardy.

Not a whole lot going on in NYC right now. Kind of crazy how empty places are. Traffic flowing nicely though!!!

Thanks newbies for your perspective.

I got an instant pot and will be making some of my vegan tortilla soup.

One can of black beans
4 cups of Vegetable stock
Some garlic
Salt, Cumin, and chilli powder
A chopped onion
Can of corn
Can of diced tomatos

Saute the onions till they’re yellow. Dump the diced tomatoes, spices, garlic and vegetable stock in there. Instantpot cook that for 10 minutes. Then dump the beans and corn in there and cook with the top off for another few minutes. Its really good! Serve with tortilla chips. It’ll make about 6 bowls and keeps for 4 or 5 days in the fridge. You can also dice up carrots or other vegetables in there if you want.

Will also be making some simple spinach lasagna that can keep.

My wife and I grocery shopped last night. Wasn’t too crazy here in Omaha but stuff was running out. Ironically enough we noticed that it was all the frozen stuff and prepackaged stuff going out. But the fresh fruit, vegetabls and meat were all fully stocked. We did buy prepackaged and frozen stuff for later but also stocked up on the fresh fruit, veggies, and meat cause you can make dishes and then freeze them.

I’m used to rice and beans, but now that everyone’s getting on the bandwagon, we’ll have to rename this pandemic the Aromavirus. On the plus side – people can isolate themselves for weeks / months. On the minus side – global warming speeds up from the increased methane production.

Via Shams

“Meanwhile, sources say the Lakers offered a package involving Alex Caruso and draft compensation for Derrick Rose, which was rejected as the Pistons had set a high value on the former NBA MVP. ”

I was wondering why no one was going after Rose. He’s been playing the best basketball of his career since the injuries and Detroit is basically in rebuild mode now.

I think you’re grades are WAY too pessimistic

DSJ – F – no argument there.

Trier – D – but wasn’t really given a chance to improve this year.

Knox – C. He improved his shot selection and I think he’s improved on defense, especially here at the end.

Frank – B- To me he looked much better this season. The numbers don’t support it completely and he still has that groin injury issue. But the handle and aggression was much improved and he truly did have some good to great games this year.

RJ – B+ – His shooting is bad. But honestly that is really the only thing he needs to improve to be a really good player. We didn’t get Zion or Ja but I think RJ is going to be a guy we can build around and could even be a perenial all-star. I think he did really well considering he started all season as a rookie.

Mitch – B+ – he came on strong at the end (as did all the young guys). Still had that foul trouble early on but by the end he was notching consistenly 25 plus minutes a night, grabbing 10 plus board and putting up 10 plus points very efficiently. And he’s had some truly dominating performances this year.

All in all, the season started out horribly with Fiz and I think it kind of soured the whole thing for us. But we got that pick for Morris (how pissed are the clippers now?) and under Miller we were playing up to our expectations and looked to be improving. People complained about the youngsters not playing enough but Mitch and RJ played plenty and when Knox and Frank played well, they got more minutes and all of them looked to be getting better before the season ended.

I have a cousin in the eye of the storm in Italy. He’s there with his wife and 3 young children. He’s telling me things aren’t nearly as bad as the media is making them out to be. He’s generally staying home and being very cautious, but he said it’s more at the level of inconvenience than hardship.

My jambalaya is the shit.

In a dutch oven, saute andouille until browned, remove and add diced yellow onion along with cajun seasoning to taste, adding salt if it’s not in the seasoning blend. When soft, add diced celery and green pepper (2:1:1 ratio, roughly). When soft, add diced garlic and jalapeno/serrano to taste. When soft, add 1c of washed white rice and stir it around so it sticks to the vegetables. Toast it that way for a minute or two, stirring it around. Add 28 oz. can of diced tomato (using good tomatoes is crucial here) and 1c of chicken stock. Put as much thin-sliced chicken breast as you want on top of the mixture. Simmer for 40ish minutes, until the rice is tender. Stir as needed, tearing up the chicken with your slotted spoon or turner. Turn the heat down and add raw shrimp, cooking until they turn pink. Serve with sour cream and tortilla chips, if you wanna get freaky.

I make this for my wife for lunch at least once a month. About 6 generous servings.

but he said it’s more at the level of inconvenience than hardship

They already have 1,016 deaths, 188 yesterday alone, and this is the tip of the iceberg.

Strat, that’s true as of now. The media are right though to depict things as very dire: shit hasn’t hit the fan yet. In around 10 days there will be 4K new cases per day (at least half will have symptoms and 10% will require intensive care). We just don’t have 400 intensive care beds PER DAY. We could be facing despair event horizon for a whole lot of people, and the social pact might be in trouble.

I mean: I’m not worried at all about me or my family. We’re not wealthy but have a fair amount of money, my parents are both retired, Lady Farfa is unemployed since early February (so the welfare’s paying her) and if not for a few ancient customers who refuse to buy a smartphone or even get a email address I could work from home every day. Also I’m an introvert nerd just like Lady Farfa, so we could stay like this for months.

But everything around us could crumble very quickly. It would be foolish not to consider this in assessing Italy’s situation.

I’m used to rice and beans, but now that everyone’s getting on the bandwagon, we’ll have to rename this pandemic the Aromavirus. On the plus side – people can isolate themselves for weeks / months. On the minus side – global warming speeds up from the increased methane production.

Hahahahaha…oh man, I needed that laugh 🙂

First case just came to East Hampton today. I’m debating whether or not I should be that guy. You know, the one that ran from NYC to East Hampton 9 days ago, and now is like “screw those people who ran from NYC to East Hampton 4 days ago, they’re ruining it for all of us!”

The Honorable Cock Jowles:
My jambalaya is the shit.

Prove it? Send me a couple of servings worth!
🙂

One of my wife’s very few flaws is her palate. She does not tolerate even slightly spicy foods well, so I have to reign in my recipes. This is no problem when dining out, of course, but a constant issue at home.

Maybe to pass the time we could all exchange favorite recipes, here? I have fairly simple ones, but I’ve yet to find a better tasting chili or salmon than the way I make them…

She does not tolerate even slightly spicy foods well, so I have to reign in my recipes.

i know diverticulosis and diverticulitis (one of many ailments i enjoy 🙂 are two different things, but – you may want to be a little cautious with the spicy stuff and the beans yourself…if you start getting infections that change your diverticulosis to diverticulitis, probably good to build up some healthy habits now to prevent the pain that might come later…

i love beans, nuts, corn, peppers and so on, but – yeah, it’s funny – it’s not so much that i’ve been on a crusade to eat healthier the last decade and a half or so, but – our bodies start letting us know what works and what doesn’t…it’s good to to try to listen…

Trump is a fucking moron. Listening to him talk makes me dumber.

Listening to him talk makes me dumber.

okay, here’s a left turn out of nowhere…i don’t really know all that much about Maynard James Keenan and Tool – but, i swear, that had to have been one of the only concerts i’ve ever been to where i came out thinking – i may actually be a little smarter for the experience 🙂

The irony of having Birx standing in front of Mike Pence, talking about the timeline of the HIV/AIDS response, while he stands there and nods his head — you can’t make this shit up.

Keith Smart worked with DSJr’s on his shot over the summer. Dennis used to have a bad shot, but after working with Smart his shot was completely and utterly broken. I think he was just getting back to his previous level of bad shooting and couldn’t really work on anything else.

I doubt there has ever been such a huge team-wide drop in shooting percentages year over year. That falls squarely on Keith Smart “shooting” coach.

You know what’s annoying about the baseball season likely being indefinitely postponed? Having to wait for year-over-year stats on the Astros’ strikeout rate at home.

Regardless of the man’s intelligence, he said and did what was needed today. It’s a complete 180 from Wednesday night, thankfully.

Speaking of North Korea, their arcane self-isolation policy of the past 70 years is looking pretty good right now.

I know it’s fun to think the white house is letting facebook groups drive policy, but I think the accurate way to read that article is probably this:

an annoying father-in-law badgered his daughter’s husband so much about his work that the husband placated him by saying “tell me what you would do and I’ll pretend to take it seriously.” And then the idiot father in law went and bragged to all his online friends that he has a line to the white house.

I assume you can leave out the chicken/shrimp and use vegetable broth and still have a nice dish. But do you think it would work substituting brown rice instead?

(EDIT: you’re not talking about Anthony Bonner’s dutch oven, are you?)

Hey, geo, thanks for the heads up! My colonoscopy people did not caution me to avoid any foods, just to get more fiber. I got the feeling my diverticulosis is mild at this time; I was quite surprised when I was told b/c I’ve never had any lower abdominal problems or symptoms.

I did have a friend caution me about eating anything with small seeds in it or on it.

Sure, it would work. I think you’d be simmering for a lot longer though.

oh god, how embarrassing, but yeah – Metamucil (the smooth, or finer grade type) is most likely the answer to your situation…so much simpler than making sure to consume “more” fiber…

life is a funny thing…i can remember decades ago watching my dad consume that stuff and thinking – that’s some weird looking orange crap…

kind of like how a decade or so ago i looked at my mom’s weekly pill box and thought to myself – yeah, that’ll never be me…life’s ironies never seem to cease…

I did have a friend caution me about eating anything with small seeds in it or on it.

what happens is non-digestible stuff like nuts, seeds, corn, pepper skins (heck, too much meat) can become trapped in one of those small pouches which exist in your colon…it stays there, irritates or damages the colon wall and voilà – infection begins…

okay, file this under something you probably never wanted to hear in your life – when things aren’t quite right for me – i can “feel” my colon…oh yeah, that’s some sexy talk there 🙂

I strongly recommend that you check out this medium post if you want to learn more about early efforts to statistically model the pandemic. I have drastically changed my personal behavior in the last 24 hours, and wish I acted sooner.

https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca

The coronavirus is coming at an exponential speed: gradually, and then suddenly.

It’s a matter of days. Maybe a week or two.

When it does, your healthcare system will be overwhelmed.

Your fellow citizens will be treated in the hallways.

Exhausted healthcare workers will break down. Some will die.

They will have to decide which patient gets the oxygen and which one dies.

The only way to prevent this is social distancing today. Not tomorrow. Today.

That means keeping as many people home as possible, starting now.

A few years ago i had to change my “shitty”nutrition drastically to rehab my colon’s situation.
Bloody shit situation. For weeks.
I tried many stuff by myself to see what helps and what doesn’t and came up with these ones:
1 Apples
2 Tahini
3 Rice
4 Olive Oil
After eating for 3 months exclusively the above mentioned i lost 15kg of fat, feeling highly energised and when i went for colonoscopy the Doctors were asking me….Where’s the problem ?
If you see red …Try it

It’s sweet that he’s doing it, but the idea that a 19-year old rookie is paying the Pelicans’ arena workers in New Orleans during this and not the team’s billionaire owner is…not good.

>Regardless of the man’s intelligence, he said and did what was needed today. It’s a complete 180 from Wednesday night, thankfully.<

Agreed.

He was very early in closing off China (good), about a week late in closing off Europe (bad), about right for when to bring in the financial executives to ensure the financial system was ok and could lend to temporarily cash strapped companies (good), correct for bringing in the private sector for help with ramping up testing kits, medical equipment, testing logistics, etc.. (good)

The one major error was not getting the testing kits and logistics going earlier, but some of that may have been bureaucratic delay that has now been bypassed. Still a major blunder.

The next move (which has to come soon) is taking care of people that are temporarily out of work. That's where the pinheads, scumbags, economically illiterate idiots etc.. (and they all fall into one category) on both sides of the aisle have to set aside politics for 5 minutes and compromise. There are plenty of good ideas.

Trump spent weeks downplaying the seriousness of the virus and his moron surrogates like Limbaugh did the same. It’s just a cold, they said. Ha ha, look at my gas mask, funny amirite? This will all go away soon. You can even go to work if you have the virus! Some people STILL aren’t taking it seriously, to “own the libs” I guess. I see several moronic Facebook posts every day about how this is all some liberal bullshit.

We should have been doing the social distancing weeks ago and there should have been tens of thousands of tests performed by now. But the guy can’t lead, and can only think about how to win a news cycle, so here we are. Fucked. I knew this was going to blow up in his face. He has said and done so many irresponsible and reckless things at this point.

My Mom and Dad are both around 70, my Mom has COPD and my dad has pulmonary fibrosis, so this thing is probably a death sentence for either of them, and since about 40-70% of us are going to get it their odds don’t look so hot.

I have almost all of the symptoms, as does my wife. Where do I get tested, again? Better yet, how do we get tested a week or two ago?

Trump is a fucking moron and you are an easy mark if you think otherwise. Period.

Serious Strat? His only real error was the test kits and that really wasn’t his fault… you know bureaucracy…not much a President’s able to do to cut through the bureaucracy in a national emergency more threatening than 9-11?

Trump was golfing this weekend and didn’t decide to do anything until people like Pence had to stage an intervention. Businesses and individuals were already taking matters into their own hands at that stage. Does that sound like the way things should work? Maybe the President should have been leading earlier?

Time was of the essence to slow the spread, if for no other reason than to prevent the hospitals from being overwhelmed. It’s ironic that your partner went to work when she didn’t have to potentially exposing you to the virus if she happened to pick it up. Do you think maybe if Trump had told people weeks ago to work from home if they’re able to it might have had an effect on her and others? He could have encouraged businesses to permit people to work from home where possible. He could have told people not to go to work even if they have mild symptoms; instead he implied it was fine to go to work. Even simple things like telling people not to cough/sneeze into one’s hand (who then touch doorknobs etc) but instead to cough into forearm would have helped. I get that there are economic factors to consider but there was so much he still could have done which would have helped to slow the spread. POTUS is in a unique position in this regard.

The worst part is that he wasn’t even agnostic; he was stating or implying it was a political hit job or hoax. And JK47 just outlined how his minions blasted this out to millions of people. Even if turns out to be on par with the flu, there’s a flu vaccine which most older people get. No CIV-19 vaccine for some time and I don’t think there’s a vaccine for any of the corona viruses.

Just remember Strat, if you have to sneeze or cough, do so into you maga cap.

Strat – I am with you on Frank. But the Trump administration has handled this horribly. And that’s factorial.

Extended off-topic Knickerblogger is one of the best silver linings I could have asked for in this time of impending societal collapse.

My dad does consulting work in Wuhan and has been there the entire time. The city quarantine is getting lifted and he’s going back to work next week.

I have almost all of the symptoms, as does my wife. Where do I get tested, again? Better yet, how do we get tested a week or two ago?

prayers are with you brother…stay safe jowles…thankfully you both are really smart folks…that’ll serve you well…do research, get organized, and take what best actions are possible…

My dad does consulting work in Wuhan and has been there the entire time. The city quarantine is getting lifted and he’s going back to work next week.

wow, that’s not something to forget…were you able to communicate the whole time?

geo: wow, that’s not something to forget…were you able to communicate the whole time?

Yeah, I usually Facetime with him every week, and there wasn’t any interruption there. I think I was more worried that he was. My dad is a go-with-the-flow kind of person, but he seemed impressively unbothered. He lives in a company dorm when he’s over there, so he was restricted to staying there and the campus cafeteria during quarantine. He had to get his temperature checked every time he entered a building.

I have almost all of the symptoms, as does my wife. Where do I get tested, again? Better yet, how do we get tested a week or two ago?”

Oh, man. I’m sorry for you two. Hopefully it’s just a regular cold. (But the silver-lining to having no good memories courtesy of the New York Knicks is that you’re young enough to thwart the coronavirus!)

The President of the United States publicly called a pandemic that has the potential to kill millions of our citizens a fucking hoax. Read that sentence again and tell me how you feel about it.

“The President of the United States publicly called a pandemic that has the potential to kill millions of our citizens a fucking hoax. Read that sentence again and tell me how you feel about it.”

I think he’s called global warming a hoax too. (That one has a potential 100% mortality rate)

I for one am impressed with the courage of Donald Trump for explicitly saying he takes no responsibility for any of the mistakes that were made in the critical early days of this crisis.

That’s the kind of moral clarity we really need from our leaders. That’s the way to make America great again. The buck stops over there. Take credit for anything good that happens, pawn things off on somebody else when something bad happens.

What a fine leader.

“The President of the United States publicly called a pandemic that has the potential to kill millions of our citizens a fucking hoax. Read that sentence again and tell me how you feel about it.”

I’m going to ask for a citation there and don’t use his SC campaign rally last month where he was clearly calling the media’s reaction to his actions a hoax.

He’s the guy you fellas were pillorying for closing access to China a few weeks ago….. hindsight surely is 20-20, huh.

He’s the guy you fellas were pillorying for closing access to China a few weeks ago….. hindsight surely is 20-20, huh.

Not me. That was clearly the correct decision. Anybody who “pilloried” him for it was wrong.

He still fucked this up in just about every conceivable way other than that.

>>>“Bobneptune said: he was clearly calling the media’s reaction to his actions a hoax.<<<

Though he tried to walk it back over the next few days, he wasn’t clearly doing anything other than making a total ass of himself and his entire administration.

“They tried the impeachment hoax. That was on a perfect conversation. They tried anything. They tried it over and over. They’d been doing it since you got in. It’s all turning. They lost. It’s all turning. Think of it. Think of it. And this is their new hoax.

“A virus starts in China, bleeds its way into various countries all around the world, doesn’t spread widely at all in the United States because of the early actions that myself and my administration took against a lot of other wishes and the Democrats’ single talking point, and you see it, is that it’s Donald Trump’s fault, right?”

A friend of mine put this timeline together with direct quotes:

January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”
February 2: “We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”
February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”
February 25: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus.”
February 25: “I think that’s a problem that’s going to go away… They have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we’re very close to a vaccine.”
February 26: “The 15 (cases in the US) within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”
February 26: “We’re going very substantially down, not up.”
February 27: “One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”
February 28: “We’re ordering a lot of supplies. We’re ordering a lot of, uh, elements that frankly we wouldn’t be ordering unless it was something like this. But we’re ordering a lot of different elements of medical.”
March 2: “You take a solid flu vaccine, you don’t think that could have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?”
March 2: “A lot of things are happening, a lot of very exciting things are happening and they’re happening very rapidly.”
March 4: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better.”
March 5: “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work.”
March 5: “The United States… has, as of now, only 129 cases… and 11 deaths. We are working very hard to keep these numbers as low as possible!”
March 6: “I think we’re doing a really good job in this country at keeping it down… a tremendous job at keeping it down.”
March 6: “Anybody right now, and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test. They’re there. And the tests are beautiful…. the tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect. Right? This was not as perfect as that but pretty good.”
March 6: “I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it… Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”
March 6: “I don’t need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn’t our fault.”
March 8: “We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on CoronaVirus.”
March 9: “This blindsided the world.”

There’s also this gem:

“We’re having to fix a problem that four weeks ago nobody thought would be a problem.”

He said this Wednesday and thought it was such a good lie he repeated it on Thursday.

Four weeks prior to that statement there were already 60,000 worldwide cases of COVID-19 and the UN had already had meetings and strategy sessions to deal with the coming pandemic. Who could have known this would be a thing?

It’s amazing the lies this guy gets away with on a daily basis.

Thank you, Brian.

The level of idiocy is galling.

But I guess his supporters will go to their graves blaming the media, democrats, foreigners, and Obama. So dumb.

I love this blog. Since 2007. KB has been part of my daily reading fare.
I love the basketball insights and the different topics discussed in this bog. Very intelligent and insightful. The only thing I dont love about this blog is that it is an Anti Trump blog. It’s also a Leftist blog, as Strat has mentioned. Im not from the US, but Im proud to say I admire President Donald Trump. Hope he wins in November 2020. Im not a great fan of the hypocrite Democrats, Obamas, and Clintons of the world. But what can I say, they are the darling of the mainstream media and most of the posters here in KB. I hope the KB fans of these people are not triggered by what I said. I will still continue and lurk here , its been a part of my life. Well, when I see anti Trump posts, I’ll just ignore them. In parting, I say take the necessary precautions guys and always err on the side of caution when it comes to this Corona Virus thing. Take care !

It is important to keep a level head and be kind to one another during these times. So with that said, James Dolan should ABSOLUTELY keep the team. We love ya Jim!

OHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA! I KID I KID!

lol

Seriously, I hope everyone one and their families are ok. I’m more worried about the people’s panic than I am the virus. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not as big of a threat as it feels like it is, so long as you’re taking care of yourself. I am, however, very concerned because my victory over cancer has left me with a compromised immune system and I work in banking. So keeping the faith and staying vigilant is a must. For us all

In the grand scheme of things, it’s not as big of a threat as it feels like it is, so long as you’re taking care of yourself.

I agree, if by “taking care of yourself” you mean pretty much avoid every unnecessary social contact. I really hope everyone learns to stay home. If not, we’re talking about 18mln deaths worldwide.

It’s esteemed (while still highly debated since we don’t know anything about the virus, but its 2.5 R0 seems to be a thing everyone agrees on) that 60% of the population would have to fall sick to develop herd immunity. Let’s say that in half the world the virus doesn’t find a way to spread because they’re not well traveled areas or whatever, we’re left with 3.5bln people, which means that 2.1bln people would get it. If we’re very conservative about lethality rate (right now it’s around 3.4%, but a lot of people suspect it to be much lower, since a lot of people without symptoms aren’t tested) and guess a 1% we’re at 21mln.

(The most realistic projections still list the casualties in the 150k; no matter how you look at it, it’s not a rosy outcome)

Thanks Farfa. Where in the world would you get numbers based information if not here at Knickerblogger.

Let’s just say I took a very deep dive into COVID-related subjects during the past two weeks 🙂

It’s nice to hear from you Joe Dumars. One of the nice things about this blog is it’s variety. Posters here disagree about more than just Trump.

Trump is generally an idiot, but that does not mean everything he did was wrong or that he didn’t make some very good moves.

IMO, the correct way to handle this was to take the appropriate actions based on the advice of medical experts (who can also be wrong) while continuing to reassure the country to prevent all out panic. That’s the exact tone Fauci has taken throughout this and he has basically been the medical spokesperson throughout.

Again

1. IMO, not closing Europe sooner was a mistake. I would have done it a week or so earlier given the growth of cases there. I’m not sure if that was his call or the call of medical experts, but it was a mistake and added to the number of cases and spread here.

2. Testing has been the major problem. That has partly been bureaucratic. The CDC would not allow certain tests to be done privately. Not overriding that and getting the private sector involved sooner was a big mistake because the CDC was bound to fail. You have to understand that the government is generally made up of a bunch of idiots that can only follow rules. I don’t care which party you belong to. At any given time we are debating degree of stupidity.

3. Underrating the seriousness of the problem was typical Trump idiocy. He’s simply too stupid to find the balance in warning about the seriousness of the problem while simultaneously reassuring people that we are taking steps to deal with the problem like Fauci.

On the flip side, closing China early in the face of criticism from the left & media that he was being racist & xenophobic was obviously a great move. Every medical expert agrees. That bought us a TON of time. It’s why we are behind the curve relative to Europe. He has also handled the financial aspects of this very well so far with bankers. If not handled properly, the implications could be dire unless you think a depression on top of health crisis would be OK. Same with the oil reserve move.

mase:
Hubert
I’m in East Hampton too, where did you hear about a corona case?

The East Hampton Star.

A state of emergency was announced for the village, too.

Since many people that use numbers and stats can be dangerous because they use them incorrectly, I’ve been following a handful of people I believe understand the math related to these kinds of risks even if they aren’t also medical experts. At least they’ll get the math right.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Pasquale Cirillo

Taleb has been warning about this for quite awhile, but he’s also been critical (in his own extreme way lol) of some of the people posing as “experts” out there.

Jeremy Faust MD MS also seems to have a good grip on things without all the panic.

Stratomatic: Frequently wrong, but never in doubt:
>Regardless of the man’s intelligence, he said and did what was needed today. It’s a complete 180 from Wednesday night, thankfully.<

Agreed.

He was very early in closing off China (good), about a week late in closing off Europe (bad), about right for when to bring in the financial executives to ensure the financial system was ok and could lend to temporarily cash strapped companies (good), correct for bringing in the private sector for help with ramping up testing kits, medical equipment, testing logistics, etc.. (good)

The one major error was not getting the testing kits and logistics going earlier, but some of that may have been bureaucratic delay that has now been bypassed.Still a major blunder.

I don’t know about all this. His speech from the oval office on Wednesday was one of the lowest points in the history of the presidency. S&P futures went down 9% immediately and the sight of his ineffectiveness caused an immediate market selloff the next morning that cost some real citizens – not the 1% – a significant portion of their wealth. It was an abject performance.

But do think he and his administration finally started handling it correctly yesterday. I don’t think he’s been as bad as everyone here would believe, but he hadn’t been good.

Gee, I wonder what the reaction would have been if Barack Obama has made weeks of statements about how the virus was contained, that it was a right wing hoax, that soon the number of cases would be zero, that the doctors were all amazed at his natural ability for science, that he was ordering “elements of medical” to deal with the situation then lied daily about tests being available when they were not. And then gave an address from the Oval Office that had several misstatements in it that had to be immediately corrected. Somehow I think all of that wouldn’t have gone over so well.

The double standard here is completely insane. Instead of leading this guy has been acting like an ass for six weeks. And then he passes the buck and says none of it is his responsibility.

He was faced with a challenge and he failed miserably, because his only instinct is to make himself look good for the current news cycle. We’re facing a global pandemic and a complete incompetent is running the show.

Hubert,

To be honest, I didn’t even listen to the Wednesday speech. I heard he was terrible.

I consider myself to be beyond listening to the media and politicians at this point. IMO, they are all morons or politically motivated liars. The only reason I heard his press conference yesterday was that I was watching CNBC while simultaneously making moves in my own portfolio and he came on.

I search for experts on my own.

I’ve mostly been searching for news via twitter. When I stumble across a medical or statistical expert that seems both competent and objective I follow them and anyone else they refer to. Unfortunately, many of the people I find are brilliant one way or the other, but so clearly have a political agenda and bias they can’t provide useful information about anything even if they think they are trying. So I bypass them.

JK47

What part of me calling him a moron did you miss?

I am simply pointing out that even morons make some very good moves. They are all also operating within an incompetent bureaucracy that would impact even the smartest leader negatively.

1. IMO, not closing Europe sooner was a mistake.

To be clear, ‘europe’ is not closed. Major countries in Europe with plenty of cases but also Trump golf courses still have no travel restrictions. And returning Americans are not restricted at all. And no one is getting tested at the border anyway*. Travel restrictions can slow the spread but they don’t actually stop it. Trump pissed away the time he gained, if any. China travel restrictions had the same loopholes that Europe ones do now.

*This one is amazing, because every other country is testing travelers for fevers at the border and quarantining folks till they can get tested. Not here! We don’t do shit here.

Well, we agree that he’s a moron. Good.

I’m not personally okay with a moron running the country, and it’s my personal opinion that having a moron in charge right now is probably going to make this worse than it needed to be. As in more people will probably die. I’m not real chill with that.

In addition to being a moron he’s also a compulsive liar, so you’d really have to be a complete idiot to believe anything coming out of his mouth. He’ll lie about anything if it makes him look a little better. So there’s just a complete vacuum of reliable, trustworthy leadership.

Not really ideal!

I was not an Obama fan for a variety of reasons.

I think my preference would be that Bill Clinton be in charge now. He has the intelligence, economic and business literacy, and political skill to do the right things in the right way. I didn’t agree with him on some things, but I can handle disagreements from people that are not idiots in one way or another.

Strat, I approach things from the market’s POV. It was looking for what it got yesterday. Problem is, it was looking for it a lot sooner. His inability to provide it on Wednesday was costly.

I have no desire to pillory him for his inadequacies. I personally think our country’s expectations of the executive branch are comical and if his presidency loosens our dependency on his office without burning the country down, it will be a success.

>To be clear, ‘europe’ is not closed. Major countries in Europe with plenty of cases but also Trump golf courses still have no travel restrictions.<

I'm aware that not all of Europe is closed yet and I think that's probably also a mistake, but I'm close to 100% sure there are reasons for that that have nothing to do with golf. That's coming from left wing idiots.

Most likely, it's some kind of balancing act between medical and economic risk, number of US citizens abroad etc.. that will prove to be another mistake that will be corrected.

>I’m not personally okay with a moron running the country,<

We should get used to it because even if he loses, Sanders is a delusional economic illiterate that couldn't run a Starbucks and Biden is a has-been that never was and probably just a few years away from needing assisted living.

Right now it looks like 4 more years of a moron or 4 years of "Weekend at Bernie's" where people actually think Biden is alive and making decision.

“Well, when I see anti Trump posts, I’ll just ignore them.”

I don’t understand why you would read the contributors here for 13 years, know they are smart and educated, and then willfully ignore them when you don’t like what they say. (But, then again, there’s a lot I don’t understand about Trump supporters).

(ps, that post by Brian isn’t even anti-trump— it is literally just things that trump has said over the past month. If you don’t read that and shake your head, I don’t know what to say).

OK enough of this. Back to binge watching “Better Call Saul” and racing at Oaklawn Park (minus the fans).

Watch Biden and Sanders’ statements about COVID and then watch Trump’s Oval Office remarks. There’s a world of difference. It’s not like either of those guys are geniuses, they’re just not complete idiots, and they’re not compulsive liars. Trump just got up in front of a microphone yesterday and completely fabricated a story about Google hiring 1,700 people to develop a testing platform that would soon be available nationwide. No such thing of the sort exists. And that’s just another Friday afternoon for that lying sack of shit.

Trump has had a pretty fortunate run in which his rank incompetence hasn’t been that obvious. Until now.

Sorry, JK, I have to disagree. Trump’s not a moron. Biden’s a moron. I’d take that any day. Trump’s a moron AND has extreme narcissistic personality disorder. He’s a very dangerous, twisted man. Remember, this was a pro-abortion democrat back when he was known as a racist, short-fingered vulgarian. The fact that this government has done a few things right (while doing an immense number of things wrong) in this crisis is a bit like lauding the old broken clock. If he was only wrong 1338 minutes of the day I’d be less inclined to despair.

Edit: this was somewhat tongue-in-cheek to an earlier post. I agree wholeheartedly with your last one…

I’d happily take George W Bush or Mitt Romney or even Ted fucking Cruz right now because while I don’t like or trust any of those people, I do believe that none of them would have cocked this up so badly.

I read on a Chinese blog that Woj is reporting that Dolan tested positive. Has anyone else heard that? I wouldn’t wish that on anyone and hope it is not true. Apparently it’s on Woj’s Twitter feed.

Stratomatic: Frequently wrong, but never in doubt: I’m aware that not all of Europe is closed yet and I think that’s probably also a mistake, but I’m close to 100% sure there are reasons for that that have nothing to do with golf. That’s coming from left wing idiots.

It’s hard to see his leaving the UK open as anything other than a political favor to a country with a similar populist government in charge. London’s infected and they all have free reign into the US.

Stratomatic: Frequently wrong, but never in doubt: We should get used to it because even if he loses, Sanders is a delusional economic illiterate that couldn’t run a Starbucks and Biden is a has-been that never was and probably just a few years away from needing assisted living.

Right now it looks like 4 more years of a moron or 4 years of “Weekend at Bernie’s” where people actually think Biden is alive and making decision.

Yup.

We get the leaders we deserve, though.

Sending sympathy to specific individuals who have tested positive is a luxury of the present.

Again I ask: where do I get tested? I read that Oregon can test 80 cases a day and they are reserved for people in critical care. Where is the FEMA response? How is it possible that I’m walking around with COVID symptoms and I cannot be tested by my government, that of the wealthiest nation in the world?

Should we call it the NyQuil Watchman state?

A friend of mine put this timeline together with direct quotes:

January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”

There is a saying in horse racing that goes something to the effect of…. I win 100% of the time when I play results. The point being you can only make predictions with the data you have at hand and history to go by. Let me refresh everyone’s memory as to the state of affairs when that quote was made:

There were 17 confirmed dead world wide not the >5,000 today
There were 500 infected in China not the 80,000 today.
No one had any inkling you could shed virus BEFORE the onset of symptoms
The SARS epidemic 17 years prior caused by the same class of virus killed 774 worldwide

At the time of that statement there was exactly ONE knows Coronavirus case in the USA. This fellow flew into the US from WuHan on 1/15…. felt sick on 1/19 and was in isolation by 1/20. There was no reason to believe this man in isolation so quickly was going to lead to 25% of all the case in America and 37 of the 50 deaths.

But that’s what happened…. but Trump should have anticipated a world-wide epidemic from 1 US case and 500 sick people in china when China was soft pedaling the information world-wide….

C’mon……

And to those of you who base your life decisions on the objectivity of factcheck.org and believe on Feb 28 when there were >50,000 ill in China and >1,000 dead that Trump actually believed the EPIDEMIC was a hoax…. then you are just being willfully obtuse

There are plenty of things to criticize your Orange Overlord for, but this ain’t one of them.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/wuhan-coronavirus-china-intl-hnk/index.html

I also find it LOL TASTIC that the talking head on CNN were calling Trump RACIST!!!!!!! the other day for calling the WuHan-Coronavirs, interestingly…

Trump paraded a bunch of CEO’s in front of the White House and the market jumped almost 2000 points. And Pence continued with the endless verbal fellatio of his boss.

So I’m sure Trump is feeling really good today, I’m surprised they didn’t unfurl a “Mission Accomplished” banner after the press conference.

Why do you think we give a fuck about CNN? Because Fox News supplies your opinions, so shitty cable news supplies ours?

Of all the grifters to get taken by, you get taken by this one? Lollllllllllll

bobneptune: I win 100% of the time when I play results.

I’m with you here.

I do think he could have and should have acted more decisively sooner (like last Friday instead of yesterday). But people acting like it was reasonable to disrupt the world’s economy with the information we had 4 weeks ago are just looking for things to hang the man with. No one would have made that call.

Again I ask: where do I get tested?

While I’m obviously not the most qualified person to answer an Oregon specific question, right now the problem in many, many countries is that they’re limiting the tampons only to people with severe symptoms. To put thing into perspective, here in Italy a guy who was in bed since February, 28th with fever, cough, a cold and very mild dyspnoea got his tampon only today (he tested positive). So, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to get a tampon done before a few days.

This is where I urge you, though, not to despair or anything. Just self-quarantine yourself and LJ. Only as soon as you (god forbid it happens) should develop serious dyspnoea a tampon should be available. I’ll cross my fingers and whatever else that you won’t need it. In the meantime take vitamin C (not more than a gram per day) and some paracetamol or aspirin.

But people acting like it was reasonable to disrupt the world’s economy with the information we had 4 weeks ago are just looking for things to hang the man with. No one would have made that call.

Even I wouldn’t have made that call, and I am kind of a libdem who have access to opinions of a wide net of medics and nurses operating in Lombardy.

It was gobsmackingly obvious to me at the time that Trump’s happy talk about the virus was irresponsible and would come back to haunt him. But it’s what he needed to say to “win” that news cycle. He doesn’t know how to do anything but brag.

He’s a terrible leader because he doesn’t give a fuck about anything but his own interests. And the incessant bullshitting and lying means that you can’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth. Any normal, mediocre average leader would be a massive improvement.

And he is STILL doing it. Just yesterday he came up with that bullshit about the nonexistent web platform and testing centers. He’s a con man, not a leader.

Raven: Trump’s not a moron. Biden’s a moron. I’d take that any day. Trump’s a moron AND has extreme narcissistic personality disorder.

You’re half right. Trump is both narcissistic AND a moron. His lack of knowledge of or curiosity in – well, just about any subject outside of himself – is pretty much non-existent. I mean, this is a man who once went bankrupt running a casino, for fucks sake,

Biden is a dim-bulb in his own right but at least he has the self-awareness to know what he doesn’t know. His admonition the other day to shut up and let the experts do their jobs would have produced far better outcomes had Trump done precisely that when the scope of the threat became apparent back in January. Instead this president’s attempts to warp reality to suit his pathetic need for self-aggrandizement (and, yes, his re-election chances) led to weeks of lies and inaction in the interests of “keeping the numbers down.”

Fuck him and fuck anyone who tries to excuse his disastrous response with the usual “both sides do it” argument.

The point being you can only make predictions with the data you have at hand and history to go by. Let me refresh everyone’s memory as to the state of affairs when that quote was made

The thing about global fucking pandemics is, if you wait to see the “results” you’ve acted far, far too late.

For example, it may have seemed like a prudent, money-saving move when in 2018 Trump fired Thomas Bossert, whose portfolio as homeland security advisor included pandemics, and didn’t replace him with someone with similar knowledge.

It may have seemed just as genius when he allowed John fucking Bolton to disband the NSC’s global health unit and didn’t replace it with anything, shedding experts like Timothy Ziemer and Luciana Borio in the process.

I mean hey, the coronavirus didn’t even exist at the time! Who ever could have foreseen that these would look like idiotic moves in hindsight?

“Admiral Ziemer’s departure is deeply alarming, especially when the administration is actively working to cut funds that addressed past pandemics like Ebola,” Rep. Ami Bera (D-Calif.), the vice ranking member of the foreign affairs committee, told HuffPost in a statement. “Expertise like his is critical in avoiding large outbreaks.”

Beth Cameron, who previously served as the senior director for global health security and biodefense on Obama’s NSC staff and is currently the Nuclear Threat Initiative’s vice president for global biological policy and programs, called his departure “a major loss for health security, biodefense, and pandemic preparedness.”

“It is unclear in his absence who at the White House would be in charge of a pandemic,” Cameron said, calling it “a situation that should be immediately rectified.”

Oh.

Tim Rieser, a staffer for the Senate Appropriations committee and senior foreign policy aide for Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), who has been called one of the “most powerful staffers in Congress presiding over U.S. foreign policy and U.S. foreign assistance,” echoed Cameron’s comments.

“We have no idea at this point who at the White House is in charge of global health security, at a time when infectious diseases can spread like wildfire in a matter of days threatening millions of Americans here and abroad,” Rieser said.

Loyce Pace, the president and executive director of the Global Health Council, a membership organization that lobbies for global health priorities, reiterated the need to know who is leading pandemic response.

“We really need a strong leader in place from the U.S. who will help coordinate an interagency response and can really provide that kind of assurance and contribute to the progress made in global health security,” Pace said.

Boy, sure seems like “I didn’t know there might be a pandemic when I slashed all pandemic preparedness” registers as a lame ass, pathetic, and downright negligent excuse to anyone with any amount of knowledge on the topic!

Last night’s symptoms were the worst so far, had to change my clothes twice during the night from waking up covered in sweat, but today seems much better. I plan to self-quarantine — and impose that without reservation on my employer — until at least the Monday after next, which will not be tough as I’m a field rep and most of my hard responsibilities can be done over the phone and computer, but Ms. Jowles has no choice but to go into work — her HR department must know she sounds ill, but they refuse to do anything about it.

She’s in a no-win situation as a new employee with zero sick leave and zero PTO (as they accrue with time worked), but she also doesn’t need the day-to-day money, so it’s not about that. She knows she should be under quarantine but the only option is to confront HR head-on that they are being grossly negligent by not identifying those who exhibit symptoms of a cold/flu and sending them home immediately and indefinitely. I feel terrible for her — the other day, she was counting the minutes to lunch so she could go in her car and let all the coughing and nose-blowing out at once. Turns out they had a vendor coming in for a lunch presentation, so she had to sit through that.

talk about trump, talk about my colon….talk about trump, talk about my colon…talk about trump or talk about my colon…

you know what my greatest weakness is: a short memory…the situation can get extremely uncomfortable if i’m not careful with my diet…after maybe six or more months of no issues i’ll start that inward dialogue wherein i’ll sort of convince myself that everything is A okay now…i’ll start craving something spicy…mmmmmm, maybe like some nachos with some of them thick tortilla chips…and, lo and behold – once again i am able to easily track the movement of material through my colon…

yeah, i get the whole my team versus your team, and, yeah – maybe the guy on my team has done some questionable stuff in the past, but, he’s still on my team, and, you know what, even if saint christopher himself was on the other team running things – i’d still be against him, cuz he’s on the other team…

i guess i should just be thankful i’ve never found myself in a situation where i had to reconcile/justify the actions and behavior of such a human being as donald john trump…the word: untenable comes to mind mostly…

and that seems like it would be a very compromising sensation…

Hubert: What did your doctor say?

Oregon has the ability to test 80 patients a day and it is reserved for those who are critically ill. There is no federal response, and therefore testing, as of now.

i guess i should just be thankful i’ve never found myself in a situation where i had to reconcile/justify the actions and behavior of such a human being as donald john trump…the word: untenable comes to mind mostly…

uncle geo is the best uncle

Seriously, defending Trump is almost like an extreme debate exercise. It’s like being given a red sheet of paper and being told to convince your audience it’s blue.

I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better Jowles, but it’s infuriating to hear what’s happening to Ms. Jowles.

It boggles my mind that any employers outside of a very select few (e.g. first responders) are taking any risks whatsoever. Seems like the vast majority of the population is still in deep denial about what we’re up against.

Jowles, I’m so sorry, and I’m flabbergasted about Lady Jowles. That’s borderline criminal. I’m actually north of you up in the pandepicenter, which really means I’m just a week ahead of your area (estimating two weeks ahead of NY, although y’all are catching up fast). I ordered all my staff to work from home two weeks ago. Unless it’s a systems-critical job (food, power, medical, emergency, etc.), everyone should be home.

But boy do I wish the season hadn’t been cancelled…

Total denial. When people start dying en masse, it’ll sink in.

Also, can I get a plus 1 for a new thread? Mobile users are in a rough place on this one.

I challenge anyone defending Trump to any degree to read this start to finish and try to keep doing so.

I mean:

The Trump White House continued to balk at health professionals who wanted to issue stark advice, officials told NBC News. One example: The CDC wanted to recommend that anyone over 60 remain inside their homes whenever possible, but was told not to say that by Trump administration officials, three people familiar with the matter told NBC News.

This unfit dickhead is going to be singularly responsible for an untold number of deaths when this is all said and done.

I agree we need a new thread.

Jowles, best of luck for you and lady Jowles.

A physician friend told me yesterday that NYS and the FDA approved a rapid CoVId testing mechanism that can yield results in about 4 hours and is a modification of an existing machine that many independent testing facilities already have. According to him, it should be up and running this week in NYC. I found this link which I believe discusses it:

THCJ: Sorry to hear about LJ. Truly horrific.

Seems like the vast majority of the population is still in deep denial about what we’re up against.

big time…i admit, i myself was late to the party – just ignorance and sheer stupidity on my part…i just didn’t get what the virus was doing…just in talking with family members and some folks at work – seems like maybe a good 30% or so of folks that i’ve spoken to about it – aren’t really seeing it…

it’s like a culling of the elderly all over the world…our parents and grandparents, and heck – us too whom may have conditions which could lead to serious complications…

i don’t know why some people either don’t believe, accept or understand…maybe media fatigue…deep distrust of everything…lack of knowledge…i’m not sure…

ma’s got strength i’ll never know…she’s also got a host of ailments which would make her susceptible to the virus’ effects…i tried to tell her to imagine 10 people standing in a group – spread them out a little bit or put them in a line…at least 8 of those people will walk away from this virus even if afflicted…and, you will be one of them…

what’s the deal with taking folks temperature?

doug chew mentioned it with his pops in wuhan, and, i’ve seen it being used on tv as a screening method…

how effective a screening tool is that really?

obviously if asymptomatic folks can spread it, and, i’ve heard it can pop up, go away, and pop up again…i guess though it does provide some indication for the likeliness of the virus…
